Effects of emerging SARS-CoV-2 on total and cause-specific maternal mortality: A natural experiment in Chile during the peak of the outbreak, 2020-2021.

This study estimated the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on maternal mortality in Chile between 2020 and 2021. A natural experiment was conducted using official data on maternal deaths and live births (LBs) between 1997 and 2021. The effects of the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak were evaluated using interrupted time series (ITS) and an autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model to forecast the expected rates on MMR and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). In Chile, following World Health Organization suggestions, maternal deaths aggravated by SARS-CoV-2 are assigned to code O98.5 (non-respirat…

Survival status and mortality predictors among severely malnourished under 5 years of age children admitted to Minia University maternity and children hospital.

BACKGROUND: Though effective treatment programs for severely malnourished children are available, mortality rate among children with acute malnutrition continue to rise and little is known about its long-term outcomes and potential predictors of its in-hospital and post-discharge mortality. The aim of this study was to assess the survival status and predictors for mortality in severely malnourished children admitted to Minia University Maternity and Children Hospital. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study which included 135 children under 5 years of age who were admitted to the nutrition reha

The triple threat of pregnancy, HIV infection and malaria: reported causes of maternal mortality in two nationwide health facility assessments in Mozambique, 2007 and 2012.

BACKGROUND: The paper's primary purpose is to determine changes in magnitude and causes of institutional maternal mortality in Mozambique. We also describe shifts in the location of institutional deaths and changes in availability of prevention and treatment measures for malaria and HIV infection. METHODS: Two national cross-sectional assessments of health facilities with childbirth services were conducted in 2007 and 2012. Each collected retrospective data on deliveries and maternal deaths and their causes. In 2007, 2,199 cases of maternal deaths were documented over a 12 month period; in 20…

The Influence of Maternal Factors on Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Admission and In-Hospital Mortality in Premature Newborns from Western Romania: A Population-Based Study.

Background and Objectives: Neonatal mortality is a global public health issue, disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income nations. Although Romania is a high-income nation, according to the European Union’s most recent demographic data, it had the second-highest infant death rate in 2019. Although significant progress has been made in the last three decades in lowering newborn mortality, more initiatives to accelerate progress are required to meet the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) objective. Therefore, we aimed to develop an observational study to determine the influence of

[Maternal mortality in the gynaecological and obstetrical clinic of the University Hospital in Rennes. A retrospective study over 10 years, from 1969 to 1979 (author's transl)].

Maternal mortality in the C.H.U. of Rennes from the 1st January 1969 to the 1st January 1979 consisted of 8 deaths in 24.911 deliveries and 1.381 Caesarean sections, which gives a mortality of 32 per 100.000 deliveries. There was 1 death due to hyperemesis gravidarum, 1 due to toxaemia of pregnancy, 3 due to haemorrhage, 1 due to puerperal sepsis, 1 due to cerebral haemorrhage and lastly 1 due to cancer of the pancreas. 2 women died during Caesarean section, which works out at 1 death per 690 Caesareans. Of these 8 deaths, 4 were possibly avoidable, and 3 of their children survived. In spite o…

A setback for Sustainable Development Goal 3.1: Documenting the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic's impact on maternal mortality through a National Confidential Enquiry in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mortality highlights health system effectiveness and social fairness. South Africa's Confidential Enquiry into Maternal Deaths (CEMD) monitors and improves maternal healthcare. While initial decreases in maternal mortality were positive, the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing provincial inequalities jeopardise reaching the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target. AIM: This analysis evaluated South Africa's maternal mortality reduction path by examining CEMD data trends, the pandemic's effect and provincial disparities to gauge progress towards its SDG commitments. METHODS: …

Infant emergency department visits, readmission, and mortality by maternal anxiety disorder during pregnancy occurring with and without other mental health conditions: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: While a link between maternal anxiety diagnoses and adverse maternal and infant outcomes has been reported, there is a paucity of data regarding infant outcomes through the first year of life in those born to individuals with anxiety only and anxiety comorbid with other mental health conditions. METHOD: The sample included 5,836,541 singleton liveborn infants in California from 2007–2020. Anxiety with and without depression or a non-depression mental health condition during pregnancy were identified from ICD codes from hospital discharge records. Adverse infant outcomes evaluated i

Mrs Stone and Dr Smellie: British eighteenth-century birth attendance and long-run levels and trends in maternal mortality discussed in a north European context.

This is a book review turned research paper. The aim is to estimate the differences in the maternal mortality rate (MMR) between untrained midwives, expert midwives, and the famous obstetrician Dr Smellie in eighteenth-century Britain. The paper shows that the birth attendance practices of the expert midwife Mrs Stone and of Dr Smellie were very similar, though Stone used her hands whereas Smellie used forceps. Both applied the same invasive techniques to successfully deliver women with similar fatal complications, techniques that untrained midwives and most surgeons of the time could not perf…

Maternal mortality and distance to facility-based obstetric care in rural southern Tanzania: a secondary analysis of cross-sectional census data in 226 000 households.

BACKGROUND: Access to skilled obstetric delivery and emergency care is deemed crucial for reducing maternal mortality. We assessed pregnancy-related mortality by distance to health facilities and by cause of death in a disadvantaged rural area of southern Tanzania. METHODS: We did a secondary analysis of cross-sectional georeferenced census data collected from June to October, 2007, in five rural districts of southern Tanzania. Heads of georeferenced households were asked about household deaths in the period June 1, 2004, to May 31, 2007, and women aged 13-49 years were interviewed about birt…

The impacts of maternal mortality and cause of death on children's risk of dying in rural South Africa: evidence from a population based surveillance study (1992-2013).

BACKGROUND: Maternal mortality, the HIV/AIDS pandemic, and child survival are closely linked. This study contributes evidence on the impact of maternal death on children's risk of dying in an HIV-endemic population in rural South Africa. METHODS: We used data for children younger than 10 years from the Agincourt health and socio-demographic surveillance system (1992 - 2013). We used discrete time event history analysis to estimate children's risk of dying when they experienced a maternal death compared to children whose mother survived (N=3,740,992 child months). We also examined variation in…

Trend and Causes of Maternal Mortality in a Nigerian Tertiary Hospital: A 5-year Retrospective Study (2010-2014) at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mortality ratios (MMR) are still unacceptably high in many low-income countries especially in sub-Saharan Africa. MMR had been reported to have improved from an initial 3,026 per 100,000 live births in 1999 to 941 in 2009, at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Calabar, a tertiary health facility in Nigeria. Post-partum haemorrhage and hypertensive diseases of pregnancy have been the common causes of maternal deaths in the facility. AIM: This study was aimed at determining the trend in maternal mortality in the same facility, following institution of some …
