We report the pathological features of a facial squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and an abdominal peripheral nerve sheath tumour (PNST) with rhabdomyoblastic differentiation in an aged free-ranging rough-toothed dolphin (Steno bredanensis). The animal was found stranded dead in poor body condition. On external examination, there was a 25 × 7 × 3 cm extensively ulcerated area on the right maxillary region of the rostrum, involving the oral mucocutaneous junction with prominent nodular edges, severe soft tissue loss and extensive maxillary and premaxillary bone lysis. On abdominal dissection, a 5 ×

We compared 9-field, equispaced intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), 4- to 5-field, directionally optimized IMRT, and 3-dimensional (3D) noncoplanar planning approaches for tumors of the maxillary sinus. Ten patients were planned retrospectively to compare the different treatment techniques. Prescription doses were 60 to 70 Gy. Critical structures contoured included optic nerves and chiasm, lacrimal glands, lenses, and retinas. As an aid for plan assessment, we introduced a new tool: Critical Organ Scoring Index (COSI), which allows quantitative evaluation of the tradeoffs between tar

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia, classified as a painful disorder of the trigeminal nerve (PDTN), is characterized by brief, electric shock-like or stabbing pain localized mainly to the maxillary and mandibular regions. The severity of these paroxysmal attacks severely impairs quality of life and, in extreme cases, may lead to suicidal ideation. We hypothesized that PDTN shares a common neuroanatomical signature with other chronic pain disorders, while also exhibiting disorder-specific alterations.
METHODS: High-resolution T1-weighted structural MRI scans from 85 individuals diagnosed with p

BACKGROUND: Tooth loss is closely related to cognitive impairment, especially affecting cognitive functions involving hippocampus. The most well-known function of the hippocampus is learning and memory, and the mechanism behind is neuroplasticity, which strongly depends on the level of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). While research has delved into the possible mechanisms behind the loss of teeth leading to cognitive dysfunction, there are few studies on the plasticity of sensory neural pathway after tooth loss, and the changes in related indicators of synaptic plasticity still need t

BACKGROUND: The posterior regions of the jaws usually represent a significant risk for implant surgery. A non-valid assessment of the available bone height may lead to either perforation of the maxillary sinus floor or encroachment of the inferior alveolar nerve and consequently to implant failure. This study aimed to evaluate the reliability of surgeon's decision in appraising the appropriate implant length, in respect to vital anatomical structures, using panoramic radiographs.
METHODS: Only implants that are inserted in relation to the maxillary sinus (MS) or the mandibular canal (MC) were

Wnt/β-catenin signaling is important for skeletal development and health. Eleven heterozygous gain-of-function missense mutations within the first β-propeller of low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5 (LRP5) are known to cause the autosomal dominant disorder called high bone mass (HBM). In 2019, different heterozygous LRP6 missense mutations were identified in two American families with the HBM phenotype but including absent lateral maxillary and mandibular incisors. We report a 19-year-old Argentinian man referred for "osteopetrosis" and nine years of generalized, medium-intensity

Single neuronal activities were recorded in the oral region of the postcentral gyrus in conscious Japanese monkeys. Among 5,756 neurons isolated, receptive fields (RFs) and submodalities were identified in 1,502 neurons in area 3b, 970 in area 1, and 1,461 in area 2. The relative incidence of neurons that had bilateral RFs increased gradually upon moving caudally from area 3b to area 2 (bilateral integration). A total of 276 neurons had bimaxillary RFs covering both the maxillary and mandibular divisions of the trigeminal nerve, such as the upper and lower lips, upper and lower teeth, palate a

BACKGROUND: Autogenous bone grafts are the most favorable and predictable types of bone graft due to their osteogenic, osteoinductive, and osteoconductive properties. The advantages of harvesting from mandibular bone are that it requires only local anesthesia, is less invasive, has less morbidity, and avoids harvesting from distant sites, thus making it the best choice for maxillary bone reconstruction.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) neurosensory disturbances after autogenous bone graft harvesting from the mandibular symphysis and retromolar regio

The human sphenoid sinus is an extremely variable cavity and an important landmark in hypophyseal surgery. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the sphenoid sinus type, size, extent of pneumatization and occurrence of protrusions of the adjacent neurovascular structures. A total of 51 randomly selected skulls (≥20 years of age, 33 male; 102 sinuses) were analyzed using cone beam computed tomography to estimate pneumatization extension beyond the body of the sphenoid (planum sphenoidale, pterygoid process, greater wings, clivus, dorsum sellae) and protrusions of the

OBJECTIVES: Endoscopic endonasal approaches to the pterygopalatine and infratemporal fossae are technically challenging due to the complex anatomy of these areas. This project attempts to develop an anatomic and surgical model to enhance the understanding of these spaces from the endonasal endoscopic perspective.
METHODS: Eight pterygopalatine and infratemporal fossae were dissected in four adult human specimens in accordance with institutional protocols. All specimens were prepared with vascular injections using colored latex. Both the pterygopalatine and infratemporal fossae were accessed u

The management of clival chordoma remains problematic. We present the case of a 48-year-old woman with clival chordoma who underwent multiple surgeries and radiation therapy, including gamma knife stereotactic radiosurgery (GK-SRS), during a 10-year clinical course. The tumor was initially removed by gross total resection via the trans-sphenoidal approach, followed by external linac radiation therapy. The tumor recurred at the clivus 5 years after the initial operation. After repeated trans-sphenoidal removal of recurrent tumors, she twice underwent GK-SRS for a tumor remnant adjacent to the b

A certain percentage of patients complain of numbness or pain in the palatine mucosa, posterior to the incisors, following septal surgery. The symptoms arise from lesions of the nasopalatine nerve near the floor of the nose. In order to demonstrate the sequelae of these lesions, we performed a prospective study on 31 individuals undergoing septoplasty. A maxillary-premaxillary approach to the nasal floor was used on one side in a group of 13 patients and on both sides in a group of 18 patients according to the respective unilateral or bilateral septal pathology. Unilateral or bilateral divisio

Background: Schwannomas are benign, slow-growing tumors that develop from Schwann cells in the nerve sheath and can occur in peripheral, cranial, or autonomic nerves. Foramen ovale schwannomas are a rare variant in the head and neck region representing 1%-2% of all intracranial schwannomas, with parapharyngeal space involvement complicating surgical resection. Case Presentation: A 48-year-old male presented with headaches after an episode of light-headedness along with facial pain. MRI showed a well-defined lesion measuring 50 × 40 × 20 mm in the left masticator space, extending superiorly up

BACKGROUND: The surgical removal of impacted third molars is considered a routine procedure for oral and maxillofacial surgeons. However, the distribution of impacted molars varies among different populations. A study into impaction patterns in the German population is currently not described. The aim of this retrospective study is to determine patterns of impacted third molars in a sample of German population, to identify gender and age specific differences as well as further risk factors for impacted molar extraction and to compare these results with other studies.

The early effectiveness of 5 analgesics was investigated after periodontal treatment. Dogs were assigned to 6 groups (n = 14 each). A prospective, randomized and blinded clinical study was performed. Before anesthesia was induced, butorphanol, morphine, carprofen and saline were administered. After induction, a maxillary and mandibular block was performed with lidocaine or bupivacaine. Painful periodontal therapies were performed. Two hours after the administration of analgesics and after anesthesia reversal, pain was scored using the Visual Analog Scale for pain (VAS) and the modified Univers

A 60-year-old woman, otherwise in a good health condition, was first admitted to the hospital with a year-long tingling sensations of the right half of the face, which gradually turned into severe neuralgia corresponding to maxillary (V2) and mandibular (V3) branches of the right trigeminal nerve. MRI scans of the head revealed an unusual hyperplastic or inflammatory changes along the brain base, cavernous sinus extending toward the pterygopalatine fossa, and lateral pterygoid on the right side. Meningioma was suspected and neuralgia was treated conservatively. About 2 years later, due to seve
