Histomorphometric analysis of overloading on palatal tooth movement into the maxillary sinus.

INTRODUCTION: Our objective was to evaluate the effect of overloading on the palatal movement of the maxillary molar. METHODS: The maxillar … penetration into the sinus and bone height reduction do not occur because new bone formation on the maxillary sinus is induced before bone resorption on the periodontal side, even though an excessive orthodontic force is applied. However, an excessive force can induce root resorption.

Sinonasal sarcoidosis of the maxillary sinus and infraorbital nerve: a case report.

Sinonasal sarcoidosis in the head and neck region is infrequent. Its occurrence can be either isolated in combination with other systems. The literature reveals that the occurrence of sinonasal sarcoidosis without lung involvement is rare. In general, sarcoidosis is a chronic non-caseating granulomatous disease of unknown origin, often identified after biopsy. In this article, we report on a benign tumor of the face that produced a diagnostic dilemma, necessitating refinement of the surgical access and in toto removal of the benign tumor.

Maxillary sinus volumes of patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Studies about maxillary sinuses of cleft lip-palate patients have increased since sinusitis is commonly observed in these patients. It is evident that maxillary sinus will be morphologically affected in these patients. And anatomic differences may be a cause or at least a contributor of sinusitis. The aim of this study was to compare maxillary sinus volumes of the non-syndromic patients with unilateral cleft lip-palate and control group by using Cone-Beam computed tomography. METHODS: Tomography scans of 44 unilateral cleft lip-palate patients (18 right and 26 left) …

Organized hematoma of the maxillary sinus: a clinicopathologic study of 5 cases.

Organized hematoma of the maxillary sinus is rare. Its pathogenesis is still not clear, and it appears to have multiple causes. We report the clinical, clinicopathologic, and immunohistochemical findings in 5 patients-3 men and 2 women, aged 19 to 68 years (mean: 40.2)-with pathologically proven organized hematoma of the maxillary sinus. In all 5 cases, we were able to successfully perform curative treatment via endoscopic sinus surgery. Our findings suggest that most organized hematomas are angiomatous. Immunohistochemical analysis identified the presence of proliferative activity.

Endoscopic assistance in the diagnosis and treatment of odontogenic maxillary sinus disease.

PURPOSE: Endoscopic sinus surgery has become an increasingly popular treatment for most surgical cases of chronic sinusitis. However, in some cases, a modification of the classic Caldwell-Luc operation is unavoidable. The purpose of this paper is to present the outcome of 20 cases with pathology of the maxillary sinus which was approached endoscopically on diagnostic or interventional purpose. The primary indication for endoscopy for 11 cases was acute or chronic odontogenic sinusitis. For six cases, endoscopy was performed for removing a foreign body from the sinus cavity and for the remainin…

Combined chemoradiation for head and neck region myxofibrosarcoma of the maxillary sinus.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Adult sarcomas of the head and neck region (HNSs) are considered a rare clinicopathological entity. They account for only 2-15% of all adult sarcomas and for less than 1% of all head and neck malignancies. The preferred initial treatment option is wide surgical excision. Whenever surgery is considered infeasible, a frontline combined-modality approach including radiotherapy and chemotherapy might be proposed. We here report on a case of localized sarcoma of the maxillary sinus treated with induction chemotherapy and subsequent intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), …

Evaluation of the posterior superior alveolar artery and the maxillary sinus with CBCT.

Assessment of the maxillary sinus anatomy before sinus augmentation is important for avoiding surgical complications, because of the close anatomical relationship between the posterior maxillary teeth and the maxillary sinus. The posterior superior alveolar artery (PSAA) is the branch of the maxillary artery that supplies the lateral sinus wall and overlying membrane. We evaluated the location of the PSAA and its relationship to the alveolar ridge and maxillary sinus using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). The study group consisted of 135 CBCT scans (270 sinuses) obtained from the archive …

Porcine study on the efficacy of autogenous tooth bone in the maxillary sinus.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to elucidate the effect of autogenous tooth bone material by experimenting on minipig's maxillary sinus and performing histological and histomorphometric analyses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five 18-24 month-old male minipigs were selected, and right maxillary sinuses were grafted with bone graft material made of their respective autogenous teeth extracted eight weeks earlier. The left sides were grafted with synthetic hydroxyapatite as control groups. All minipigs were sacrificed at 12 weeks after bone graft, which was known to be 1 sigma (σ) period for pigs. Specim…

Morphometric analysis of the maxillary sinus in patients with nasal septum deviation.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between nasal septum deviation, which is common in the general population, and maxillary sinus volume. A retrospective assessment was made for 96 patients with nasal septum deviation without coexisting sinonasal morbidity and compared to 60 healthy individuals. A three-dimensional reconstruction of computed tomography images was used to assess a total of 312 maxillary sinus volumes. Septal deviation angles and volumes were also measured to standardize and determine the severity of the septal deviations. Septal deviations were right-sided i…

An update on squamous carcinoma of the oral cavity, oropharynx, and maxillary sinus.

There are more than 45,000 new cancer cases involving the head and neck diagnosed each year within the United States. Squamous cell carcinoma accounts for the majority of cases, often occurring within the oral cavity and oropharynx. This article reviews current literature and various controversial topics involving the diagnosis and treatment strategies for patients with oral cavity/oropharyngeal cancers. Although not considered cancer within the oral cavity, maxillary sinus squamous cell carcinoma is discussed.

Progressive swelling and radiopaque mass in maxillary sinus: formation of stone.

Although radiopaque lesions located in the maxillary sinus are rare, differential diagnosis should include a number of pathologies. Formation of stone, namely "antrolith" in the paranasal sinuses is a very rare phenomenon and it should be considered in the differential diagnosis, as it is usually located in the maxillary sinus. In this article, we present a 47-year-old male case with unilateral chronic sinusitis for a long time and calcification in maxillary sinus in the light of clinical/radiographic findings of the lesion and treatment strategy.

An acoustical analysis of the effects of maxillary sinus augmentation on voice quality.

OBJECTIVE: Increased experience in sinus lifting procedures has led to a number of literature reports, but the potential effects of sinus lifting on voice quality is not clearly addressed in clinical studies. The aim of this study was to objectively investigate the effects of sinus lifting on alterations in voice quality and, in particular, on vocal resonance. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 17 patients who were in need of bilateral sinus augmentation were recruited. Acoustic analyses were performed before and after surgery. Volume changes in the sinuses were recorded before and after surgery using

Clonal evolution of a case of treatment refractory maxillary sinus carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Maxillary sinus carcinoma (MSC) is a rare cancer of the head and neck region. Patients are treated with surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy and the treatment regimen is based on patient's age, general health condition, disease stage, and its extent of spread. There is very little information available on the genetics of this disease. DNA content based flow sorting of tumor cells followed by array comparative genomic hybridization allows for high definition global assessment of distinct clonal changes within tumor populations. METHODS: We applied this technique to primary …
