The purpose of this study was to describe the results of definitive radiotherapy (RT) with concurrent chemotherapy for maxillary sinus carcinomas (MSCs) with neck lymph node metastasis to clarify its limitation. Local control (LC), progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) rates were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method and were compared between subgroups using the log rank test. Toxicity was classified using common terminology criteria of adverse events version 5.0. Eighteen patients with inoperable MSC with neck lymph node metastasis including 12 men and 6 women with a me

Central ossifying fibroma (COF) is a benign osteogenic neoplasm, with fibrous tissue and calcifications similar to bone, which has the clinical presentation of an asymptomatic bulging. It is more common in the mandibular premolar and molar region, in the third and fourth decades of life, and in women more frequently than men. Surgical removal is the treatment of choice and additional reconstruction is essential due to the functional and esthetic problems faced by the patient. This article describes the surgical treatment and subsequent reconstruction in a 22-year-old man with COF and an expans

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the immunohistochemical TS expression in patients with maxillary sinus SCC.
METHODS: The value of immunohistochemical TS expression as a predictive indicator for 5-FU efficacy was retrospectively examined in 47 patients with maxillary sinus SCC.
RESULTS: Of the 47 patients, 29 (62%) showed complete response for 5-FU based chemoradiotherapy. Seventeen of 19 (89%) TS low cases showed a complete response, whereas 12 of 28 (43%) TS high cases showed complete response for 5-FU based chemoradiotherapy. Low TS patients had significantly better respon

INTRODUCTION: Squamous cell carcinomas arising from the maxillary sinus have been rarely reported. The authors report the original case of a patient with squamous cell carcinoma of this site with an unusual clinical course.
CASE REPORT: A woman presented with squamous cell carcinoma of the maxillary sinus that was only diagnosed 6 months after onset of symptoms. At the time of diagnosis, the tumour had spread to the brain via the maxillary nerve and to the skin. The patient was treated by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Four months after stopping treatment, the patient presented Brown-Sequard

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: There is a paucity of data to guide the optimal management of the airway in patients after maxillectomy. The decision on whether a concomitant tracheostomy is needed is often dictated by the surgeon's training and experience. We reviewed our experience with maxillectomy to assess the need for tracheostomy in postoperative airway management.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective analysis at a university hospital.
METHODS: We identified 121 patients who underwent 130 maxillectomies between October 1990 and September 2001. Twenty-four of these were total (all six walls removed), 45

BACKGROUND: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) accounts for over 80% of malignant tumors arising from the kidney. However, metastatic RCC to the head and neck is a relatively rare entity.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe three patients with metastatic RCC to the head and neck with the involvement of the parapharyngeal space, the level V region of the neck, and the maxillary sinus.
CONCLUSION: Metastatic RCC in the head and neck is uncommon; however, it must be taken into consideration given a patient with a history of RCC. Multiple pathways allow for the spread of RCC to the head and neck region. Trea

INTRODUCTION: Inverted Papilloma (IP) is a rare benign tumour of the nose and paranasal sinuses histologically characterized by invagination of the outer layer of the epithelium in the underlying chorion. Its most distinctive feature is a strong local aggressiveness, a tendency to recur and an unpredictable risk of association with epidermoid carcinoma. The purpose of this study was to report the epidemiological, clinical, paraclinical data as well as to assess the outcomes of endoscopic endonasal surgery.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study on a series of 13 patients whose data were

Tumours of the midface and maxillary sinuses have been removed via multiple approaches. The most common approaches are those using incisions in the facial skin, especially in the case of malignant tumours. The Le Fort I procedure via an intraoral incision as described by Sailer in 1986 is a versatile alternative. Combined with a coronal approach and various osteotomies of the upper face it also allows removal of tumours extending into the orbits, the nasoethmoidal complex and the skull base. The versatility of the Le Fort I osteotomy as a surgical approach was analysed in 17 cases. This method

Squamous cell carcinoma is a common malignant condition affecting the oral cavity and may involve the surrounding maxillofacial regions. Treatment commonly involves resection of the tumor, followed by prosthetic rehabilitation of the resection defect. This clinical report presents a 62-year-old Asian male patient who had previously undergone surgical resection, resulting in a post-surgical Aramany Class II maxillary defect. The patient's medical history included severe trismus, characterized by restricted mouth opening, as well as a diagnosis of maxillary sinus verrucous squamous cell carcinom

PURPOSE: Sinonasal tumours are rare diseases with poor prognosis. Multimodal approach including surgery is widely used, although no standard therapy has been established in prospective trials. This study assessed activity and safety of an innovative integration of multimodality treatment-induction chemotherapy (ICT), surgery and radiotherapy (RT)-modulated by histology and response to ICT.
METHODS: Patients with untreated, operable sinonasal tumours with selected histotypes (squamous cell carcinoma, intestinal-type adenocarcinoma, sinonasal undifferentiated and neuroendocrine carcinoma, olfac

Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma is a rare and aggressive malignancy. Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma has long been considered a diagnosis of exclusion; to date, the molecular pathogenetic basis for sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma is unknown. To identify potential oncogenic drivers in sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma, targeted next-generation sequencing of 300 cancer-related genes was performed on 11 cases of sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma. We identified IDH2 R172X mutations in 55% of sinonasal undifferentiated carcinomas including R172S, R172T, and R172M. Multispecific
