Silent sinus syndrome is a rare clinical condition in which patients present with spontaneous enophthalmos and hypoglobus secondary to collapse of orbital floor due to chronic subclinical maxillary sinusitis. It is postulated that obstruction of the osteomeatal complex lead to negative antrum pressure which causes the maxillary sinus atelectasis.

We present an osteolytic nasal polyp of the maxillary sinus with clinical features and radiographic features mimicking that of a malignancy. Maxillary sinusitis being a common inflammatory condition progressed to cause destruction of the maxillary bone and spread into the facial soft tissue, which is quite a rare occurrence. We have discussed in detail the clinical, radiological, histopathology and management of this uncommon presentation of a common case.

The serum antibodies against lipopolysaccharide of Hemophilus influenzae were measured in acute and convalescent phase sera from 30 patients with acute maxillary sinusitis using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Levels of antibodies in the maxillary antral secretions were also measured. In convalescent phase sera from 15 patients with acute sinusitis due to H influenzae, there was a threefold, 1.5-fold, and threefold increase in the geometric mean titers of IgG, IgM, and IgA, respectively. In antral secretions, titers were significantly higher (p less than .01) in culture-positive patients th…

Although many investigations on the bacteriology of chronic sinusitis have been reported, there is still much discussion about the physiological flora of the nose and paranasal sinuses, the role of the various aerobic and anaerobic "pathogenic" bacteria, and the influence of the anatomical location from which samples for bacteriology are taken. We conducted a qualitative and semi-quantitative bacteriological examination of patients with chronic sinusitis undergoing a transnasal sinus operation (patient group), and of patients without chronic sinusitis undergoing a septoplasty (control group).

The aim of this study was the determination of bacteria present in maxillary and ethmoid cavities in patients with chronic sinusitis and to correlate these findings with bacteria simultaneously present in their nasopharynx. The purpose of this correlation was to establish the role of bacteria found in chronically inflamed sinuses and to evaluate if the bacteria present colonized or infected sinus mucosa. Nasopharyngeal and sinus swabs of 65 patients that underwent functional endoscopic sinus surgery were cultivated and at the same time the presence of leukocytes were determined in each swab. T

BACKGROUND: Fungal ball sinusitis is a sinonasal fungus ball that usually affects immunocompetent adults with female predominance. The most affected sinus is the maxillary sinus. Aspergillus species is the most typically found fungus. Computed tomography (CT) scan is the gold standard tool in order to diagnose fungal ball sinusitis. The ultimate method for a fungal ball is functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), which has a high success rate and a low morbidity rate.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to demonstrate the various clinical presentations of fungal ball sinusitis including isolated ma

Mucoceles are defined as chronic, cystic lesions in the paranasal sinuses. When the mucocele content becomes infected, the lesion is defined as mucopyocele. Most mucoceles are located in the frontal and anterior ethmoid sinuses and normally they involve the frontal-ethmoid complex, expanding to the superior-medial region of the orbit, leading to ocular disorders; maxillary sinus presentation is rare. In the present article, the authors described a rare case of mucopyocele in the maxillary sinus.

OBJECTIVE: Nasal septum deviation (NSD) is an anomaly that disturbs normal mucus drainage in sinuses, leading to recurrent sinusitis. Sinusitis, infections, and mucosal irritations are the potential causes of Schneiderian membrane thickening (SMT). The aim of this study was to evaluate the characteristics and association between NSD and SMT along with factors such as age, gender, and tooth groups using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging.
METHODS: The maxillary sinus and nasal cavity of 249 patients (136 females and 113 males) were examined retrospectively using CBCT. The statistical

Maxillary sinus mucocoeles are rare, but may cause significant problems outside the sinus including diplopia and cheek swelling. We present 9 patients suffering from maxillary sinus mucocoele, including one patient with bilateral involvement, representing 10 involved sinuses. Eight sinuses were treated endoscopically and followed-up for 3 to more than 6 years; one of these developed a recurrence. Two sinuses were treated using a classical external approach (Caldwell-Luc), one at the beginning of our series, and one as the endoscopic technique was difficult to perform due to loss of anatomical

Allergic fungal sinusitis is chronic and paranasal, related to fungal allergy. Many papers on allergic fungal sinusitis have been reported i … fungi. We studied clinical data and histology of fungi and paranasal mucosa in 9 cases with fungal maxillary sinusitis, but none had allergy or eosinophilic mucin. This suggested that few patients with allergic fungal sinusitis exist among those with chronic paranasal sinusitis.
