The scanning electron microscopy of scolices in a case of hydatid cyst from human liver.

The scanning electron microscopic (SEM) features of hydatid scolices from a case of hydatid disease of the liver are described. The scolex when fully everted has a double circle of hooklets which occupy a large area of the parasite. The hooklets are inserted into the rostellum with one row of hooklets overlapping the other. Each hooklet is about 20 to 40 um long, has a basic round structure sharp at the distal end and broadens as it curves towards the point of insertion at the rostellum, where 2 blunt projections correspond to the 2 annular bundles of muscle fibres at the orifice of the scolex

Characterization of T-cell subclasses and NK-cells in lysosomal disorders by immuno-electron microscopy.

Previous studies have shown that B and T lymphocytes are affected in lysosomal disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate the involvement of subclasses of T lymphocytes and natural killer cells in lysosomal diseases. CD4+, CD8+, and CD56+ cells were immunomagnetically separated from peripheral blood mononuclear cells in 10 patients with various lysosomal diseases--including one patient each with infantile, late infantile, and juvenile neuronal ceroid-lipfuscinoses, two patients with mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) type I and four patients with MPS type III, and one patient with mucolipido

Structure of photoreceptive membranes of Drosophila compound eyes as studied by quick-freezing electron microscopy.

Photoreceptive membranes of Drosophila compound eyes were studied by quick-freezing electron microscopy. The quick-frozen photoreceptive microvilli appeared cylindrical in shape either when they were freeze-substituted or freeze-fractured. Deep-etch replication revealed the extracellular surfaces of microvilli which were covered by various particles arranged in a helical manner. The protoplasmic surfaces were covered by more regular helical rows of particles about 10 nm in diameter. When rhodopsin content of the photoreceptive membranes was reduced by vitamin A-deficiency, the intramembrane pa

[Light and scanning electron microscopy study of the pathogenesis of pilonidal sinus and anal fistula].

From various theories about the development of the pilonidal sinus Stelzner's opinion as to an acquired disease is generally accepted. Our scanning electron microscopic investigations strengthen this theory that hair splits and drills into the skin. Hooks keep it from retracting. Needlelike sharp ends may contribute to the hair piercing the skin. The anal fistula differs from the pilonidal sinus concerning morphology and pathogenesis. Surgical treatment must consider the localisation of the proctodeal gland.

Light and electron microscopy of the cornea in systemic mucopolysaccharidosis type I-S (Scheie's syndrome).

A 37-year-old man with coarse facies, stiff joints, corneal clouding, and normal intelligence sought medical attention. The diagnosis of a systemic mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) type I-S (Scheie's syndrome) was confirmed by the presence of lysosomal alpha-L-iduronidase deficiency and excessive urinary dermatan and heparan sulfate excretion. The corneal button after perforating keratoplasty of the right eye demonstrated mucopolysaccharides consisting of numerous vacuoles containing fibrillogranular and partly membranebound material in epithelial cells, histiocytes, keratocytes, and extracellular

Secondary retention of permanent molars: an assessment of ankylosis by scanning electron and light microscopy.

Secondary retention refers to the cessation of eruption of a tooth after emergence. This may be the result of pathological changes in the periodontal ligament. The aim of this study was to describe the morphological and histological aspects of the radicular surface of secondarily retained permanent molars. The roots of 12 secondarily retained molars and two control molars, were examined by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy (LM) in order to analyse the occurrence and localisation of ankylosis. With SEM it was observed that the root surface of retained molars showe

Subcellular changes of rat myocardium after treatment with amiodarone or desethylamiodarone, studied with electron microscopy.

Amiodarone, an antiarrhythmic agent, has proven to be unique in its capability to control arrhythmias unresponsive to conventional drugs. However, its association with many undesirable side effects after chronic usage has become just as clear. Chronic clinical toxicity with amiodarone is associated with intracellular lamellar or myelinoid inclusion bodies (onionoid bodies or corpora cepiformia) in various organs (i.e. skin, cornea, lung, liver, and lymph nodes). Previous study has demonstrated formation of these inclusion bodies in canine myocardium following multiple doses of amiodarone. The

Ultra structural studies of the surface of Hymenolepis nana by scanning and transmission electron microscopy.

Scanning electron microscopy of the surface of Hymenolepis nana indicated that dense populations of microtriches occur on scolex proper, suckers and strobila, with an average density of 20/micron2. The excellent preservation of microtriches proves the efficacy of the critical point drying method for preparing cestodes for study of SEM. The cytological structure of the tegument of H. nana corresponds in general to that of other tapeworms.

Infection of catheterised patients: bacterial colonisation of encrusted Foley catheters shown by scanning electron microscopy.

The surfaces of 32 encrusted urinary catheters were examined by scanning electron microscopy to investigate the association of bacteria with the encrusting deposits. Deposits consisted of struvite crystals surrounded by aggregates of very small crystallites of hydroxyapatite. Underneath these minerals there was a layer of closely packed bacteria. Impressions of bacteria were also observed in hydroxyapatite. Crystals were often engulfed by the bacterial layer, which thus appeared to bind the crystals to each other and to the catheter surface. This thick layer of bacteria associated with crystal

[Herpetic brain stem encephalitis: report of an autopsied case with immunohistochemical and electron microscopy studies].

A post-mortem examined case of herpetic brainstem encephalitis is presented. Clinically, the patient had cephalalgia followed by ataxia, drowsiness and multiple palsies of some cranial nerves, developing into death in eight days. The pathologic examination of the brain showed necrotizing encephalitis in multiple foci limited to the brainstem, more distinctly in the pons and medulla oblongata. The technique of immunoperoxidase revealed rare glial cells with intranuclear immunoreactivity for herpes antigen. Rare viral particles with the morphological characteristics of the herpesvirus were ident

Transmission electron microscopy of early microbial colonization of human enamel and root surfaces in vivo.

This study describes the early microbial colonization of teeth by the use of light- and transmission electron microscopy. Six dental students carried a total of 60 test pieces of unerupted enamel and root surface in intraoral acrylic appliances for 4, 8, 12, 24 and 48 h, during which periods oral hygiene was abandoned. Pronounced variations were recorded in structure and thickness of the pellicle across the individual surfaces of both dental tissues. Bacterial single-cell colonization increased the electron density of the adjoining pellicle. Micro-colonies of bacteria were observed in relation

Morphogenesis of the venous valves in the rat heart. I. Light and scanning electron microscopy.

Hearts from rat embryos ranging from 12.5 days gestation through birth were studied with light and scanning electron microscopy. Both valves of the sinus venosus are very prominent structures in the right atrium of the developing rat heart. The right venous valve is large and undulating and extends to the right atrioventricular canal. Many nodules are apparent on the surface of this valve by the thirteenth day. These nodules decrease in number as development progresses. The left venous valve is considerably smaller than the right. Neither valve shows signs of regression, and just prior to birt

Malignant epithelioid schwannoma of superficial soft tissue? A case report with immunohistology and electron microscopy.

Malignant epithelioid schwannoma is a well-defined entity. However epithelioid tumours arising other than in a nerve trunk, in a benign nerve sheath tumour or in neurofibromatosis are problematical. We describe a case of a nodular tumour of the cheek which recurred twice without metastasis. Light microscopy showed an amelanotic epithelioid tumour. Immunohistology showed positive staining for vimentin and S100 protein and electron microscopy showed distinctive appearances suggestive of schwannoma. We discuss the differential diagnosis of the tumour, compare it with reported tumours resembling b

Juvenile xanthogranuloma: an analysis of 45 cases by clinical follow-up, light- and electron microscopy.

Juvenile xanthogranuloma is a benign, nevoid histiocytosis not related to histiocytosis X. The lesions wrinkle, then flatten out and in 40% of the cases they leave no trace without any treatment. It is more frequent in boys. One patient also had granulomatous lesions of the eye, 8 had café-au-lait spots and 3 epilepsy.

Granular cell tumor arising in myelinated peripheral nerves. Light and electron microscopy and immunoperoxidase study.

The histologic, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural characteristics of two granular cell tumors arising from the right recurrent laryngeal and left facial nerves are described. S-100 protein was detected both in the nuclei and cytoplasm of the granular cells using the peroxidase-anti-peroxidase method. The ultrastructural findings in both cases support a Schwann cell derivation of the granular cells. It is suggested that the granularity of cells of granular cell tumor may represent a lysosomal disorder affecting most frequently neoplastic and nonneoplastic Schwann cells and occasionally ot

Prenatal exclusion of Herlitz syndrome by electron microscopy of fetal skin biopsies obtained at fetoscopy.

Two women had each borne a child who had died of Herlitz syndrome, i.e., epidermolysis bullosa atrophicans generalisata gravis. In subsequent pregnancies, the women requested prenatal diagnosis. Samples of skin from the two fetuses were obtained at fetoscopy in the 19th week of gestation. In both cases the disorder could be ruled out prenatally on the basis of ultrastructural demonstration of the regular presence of normal hemidesmosomes with well-developed sub-basal dense plates at the dermo-epidermal junction. The infants were subsequently born and had normal skin, the sites of fetal skin bi

[Morphological identification of cryptosporidia in the intestines of calves using light and scanning electron microscopy].

Small and large intestines of ten calves of the age from 7 to 21 days, suffering from cryptosporidiosis were examined. It is recommended to perform the histopathological identification of cryptosporidia by prolongation of the basic staining with haematoxylin to one hour and by additional staining with tartrazine. Out of the special methods the most suitable are as follows: Wolbach's modification of Giems' staining method or staining with toluidine or polychromous blue. Mucopolysaccharides are in the granules and in the capsules of some developmental stages of cryptosporidia. By means of scanni

[Scanning electron microscopy of the surface of human cementum in various physiological and pathological conditions].

In scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the dental root surfaces human cementum resorption by giant multinucleated cells appeared similar in temporary and permanent teeth. Thus the resorbed zones were formed by associated Howship lacunae. On the lacunae walls, the openings of numerous tubules of the cementocytic lacunae were seen. Such aspects were noted during the physiological resorption of temporary teeth. The cementum surface of permanent teeth without pathology, presented frequently such resorption aspects around their apical regions as well as on other regions, the resorbed areas being
