Varroa destructor resistance to tau-fluvalinate: relationship between in vitro phenotypic test and VGSC L925V mutation.

BACKGROUND: Varroa destructor is a parasitic mite of the honey bee, Apis mellifera. Its presence in colonies can lead to a collapse within a few years. The use of acaricides has become essential to manage the hive infestation. However, the repeated and possibly incorrect use of acaricide treatments, as tau-fluvalinate, has led to the development of resistance. The in vitro phenotypic test allows the proportion of susceptible or resistant individuals to be known following an exposure to an active substance. In Varroa mites, resistance to tau-fluvalinate is associated with the presence of mutati

Aggregated distribution of infective spots composed of Leptotrombidium pallidum, highly prevalent with Rickettsia tsutsugamushi, demonstrated by sentinel voles, Microtus montebelli, on the ground.

In the epidemiological surveys on scrub typhus at Chichibu City near Tokyo, an area, 350 m by 35 m, in the Hitsujiyama Park was found to be heavily infested with Rickettsia tsutsugamushi (Rt). Distribution of trombiculid mites and their infection rates in this area were studied using sentinel animals, 48 Microtus montebelli and 10 ddY mice. The surveys were conducted 6 times in the autumn in 1985 and 1986. At the first 2 surveys, 16 animals were placed at random, and 4 restricted areas were identified as highly populated with trombiculid mites. For the detailed survey, each of 4 areas was divi

Genetic variability of the honey bee mite, Varroa destructor, from a humid continental climatic region of Canada, and temperate and tropical climatic regions of Mexico.

Varroa destructor is a damaging mite of Western honey bees (Apis mellifera). Genetic variability of the mite in different regions of the world could be related to the movement of infested bees or other factors, such as climate. In this study, V. destructor samples were collected from tropical and temperate climate regions of Mexico, and a humid continental climate region of Canada. COX-1 AFLPs showed that all the mites were the Korean haplotype. Four microsatellites revealed nine haplogroups from the continental climate region of Canada, compared to three haplogroups from the tropical and temp

Characterisation of recombinant immunoreactive antigens of the scab mite Sarcoptes scabiei.

Sarcoptic mange (or scabies) is an important skin disease which can affect a variety of species including humans, cattle, goats, sheep, horses, pigs, rabbits, and dogs. Approximately 300 million people are affected worldwide and in lifestock animals the infestation may lead to substantial economic losses caused by depression in growth and feed conversion rates. Diagnosis of Sarcoptes infestation is difficult and only a few serological tests have been developed using whole mite antigen for diagnosis of mange in animals. Here we describe the isolation and characterisation of cDNAs of several imm

ROSACEA-LIKE DEMODICIDOSIS.

Rosacea-like demodicidosis is an entity resembling acne rosacea which is caused by infestation with an abnormally large number of the mite Demodex folliculorum, usually in association with improper cleansing of the face. This condition responds promptly to external treatment consisting of daily cleaning of the face with soap and water and the application of a compound sulfur ointment over a period of a few weeks. Occasional instances of a mixed-type of rosacea are encountered in which internal factors are involved.

Common skin conditions in humans and animals.

A variety of fungal, bacterial and parasitic infections may affect the skin of both humans and animals. Streptococcal and staphylococcal infections may be transmitted from animals to man. Although lice are host-specific, fleas may leave the preferred animal host and cause local allergic reactions when they bite humans. Ticks and mites commonly infest both humans and animals. A canine variety of Sarcoptes may occasionally cause human scabies.

From consumption to excretion: Lithium concentrations in honey bees (Apis mellifera) after lithium chloride application and time-dependent effects on Varroa destructor.

BACKGROUND: Owing to its systemic mode-of-action and ease of application, lithium chloride (LiCl) is an ideal varroacide for the control of Varroa destructor infestations in honey bee colonies. To better understand how LiCl functions within a colony, we screened different parts of honey bee anatomy for lithium accumulation. We wanted to elucidate the time-dependent effects of LiCl on V. destructor and its metabolism within honey bees when they were fed continuous LiCl treatments, as well as evaluate potential adverse effects such as accumulation in the hypopharyngeal glands of nurse bees, whic

A tale of three acaropathogenic fungi in Israel: Hirsutella, Meira and Acaromyces.

We review published and unpublished studies conducted in Israel with six acaropathogenic fungi, assayed in order to control the citrus rust mite, Phyllocoptruta oleivora (Ashmead) (CRM). Hirsutella thompsonii Fisher was introduced twice, killed 80-90% of the exposed mites, but due to its requirements for near-saturation humidities was deemed unsuitable for local outdoors conditions. Hirsutella kirchneri (Rostrup) Minter et al. and Hirsutella necatrix Minter et al. were also introduced and assayed against CRM and spider mites, but their efficacy was unsatisfactory. Three indigenous fungi found

Parasites and Pathogens of the Honeybee (Apis mellifera) and Their Influence on Inter-Colonial Transmission.

Pathogens and parasites may facilitate their transmission by manipulating host behavior. Honeybee pathogens and pests need to be transferred from one colony to another if they are to maintain themselves in a host population. Inter-colony transmission occurs typically through honeybee workers not returning to their home colony but entering a foreign colony ("drifting"). Pathogens might enhance drifting to enhance transmission to new colonies. We here report on the effects infection by ten honeybee viruses and Nosema spp., and Varroa mite infestation on honeybee drifting. Genotyping of workers c

New methods of applying drugs for the control of ectoparasites.

A brief history of the development of methods used to apply drugs (commonly called insecticides or acaricides) to domesticated animals for the control of ectoparasites is presented. The focus is on methods used in the United States for treating cattle, sheep and goats, and swine. Details of the evolution of treatment methods are presented for lice, flies, cattle grubs, keds, ticks, and other arthropods. In general, treatment methods have undergone some change over the years; while, in contrast, treatment materials have changed considerably. Three trends in treatment methods become obvious - (1

Severe Tick Infestation and Haemogregarina spp. Infection in a Captive African Rock Python (Python sebae): A Clinical and Parasitological Case from Nigeria.

Ectoparasitic infestations in reptiles-primarily ticks and mites-can significantly compromise their health and fitness, particularly in captivity conditions. This brief report describes a severe tick infestation and concurrent Haemogregarina spp. infection in an African rock python (Python sebae) at a private zoo in Abeokuta, Nigeria. Initial clinical evaluation revealed heavy infestations of Amblyomma latum ticks, pronounced facial swelling, incomplete shedding, anorexia, lethargy, and the presence of intraerythrocytic Haemogregarina-like gamonts on stained blood smears. Haematological analys

INFLUENCE OF GROOMING ON PERMANENT ARTHROPOD ASSOCIATES OF BIRDS: CATTLE EGRETS, LICE, AND MITES.

Birds have a diverse community of "permanent" arthropods that complete their entire life cycle on the body of the host. Because some of these arthropods are parasites that reduce host fitness, birds control them by grooming, which consists of preening with the beak and scratching with the feet. Although preening is the primary component of grooming, scratching is essential for controlling arthropods on the head and neck, which cannot be preened. Several unrelated groups of birds have evolved comb-like pectinate claws on the middle toenail of each foot. We tested the role of these claws in the

Local and systemic effects of two herbivores with different feeding mechanisms on primary metabolism of cotton leaves.

Caterpillars and spider mites are herbivores with different feeding mechanisms. Spider mites feed on the cell content via stylets, while caterpillars, as chewing herbivores, remove larger amounts of photosynthetically active tissue. We investigated local and systemic effects of short-term caterpillar and spider mite herbivory on cotton in terms of primary metabolism and growth processes. After short-term caterpillar feeding, leaf growth and water content were decreased in damaged leaves. The glutamate/glutamine ratio increased and other free amino acids were also affected. In contrast, mild sp
