Real-time control of respiratory motion: Beyond radiation therapy.

Motion management in radiation oncology is an important aspect of modern treatment planning and delivery. Special attention has been paid to control respiratory motion in recent years. However, other medical procedures related to both diagnosis and treatment are likely to benefit from the explicit control of breathing motion. Quantitative imaging - including increasingly important tools in radiology and nuclear medicine - is among the fields where a rapid development of motion control is most likely, due to the need for quantification accuracy. Emerging treatment modalities like focussed-ultra…

Impaired Fellow Eye Motion Perception and Abnormal Binocular Function.

PURPOSE: Binocular discordance due to strabismus, anisometropia, or both may result in not only monocular visual acuity deficits, but also in motion perception deficits. We determined the prevalence of fellow-eye deficits in motion-defined form (MDF) perception, the ability to identify a two-dimensional (2D) shape defined by motion rather than luminance contrast. We also examined the following: the causative role of reduced visual acuity and binocularity, associations with clinical and sensory factors, and effectiveness of binocular amblyopia treatment in alleviating deficits. METHODS: Partic…

Magnocellular Based Visual Motion Training Improves Reading in Persian.

The visual magnocellular system is thought to play a crucial role in learning to read. Here therefore, we examined whether magnocellular bas … of their saccadic eye movements. The experimental group received twelve magnocellular based visual motion training sessions, twice a week over 6 weeks. During the same period, the control group played a video game with the help of a practitioner. All measures were made just prior to the training and were repeated at the 6th, 12th training session and on …

Motion sickness in passenger vehicles during test track operations.

As automation transforms drivers into passengers, the deployment of automated vehicles (AVs) has the potential to greatly increase the incidence of motion sickness. A study was conducted to quantify motion sickness response of front-seat passengers performing ecologically relevant passenger activities during conditions consistent with driving on public roadways. Fifty-two adults with a large range of self-reported levels of motion sickness susceptibility and age participated in data collection on a closed test track in a passenger sedan. Motion sickness ratings increased with task vs. no-task …

Sick Moves! Motion Parameters as Indicators of Simulator Sickness.

We explore motion parameters, more specifically gait parameters, as an objective indicator to assess simulator sickness in Virtual Reality (VR). We discuss the potential relationships between simulator sickness, immersion, and presence. We used two different camera pose (position and orientation) estimation methods for the evaluation of motion tasks in a large-scale VR environment: a simple model and an optimized model that allows for a more accurate and natural mapping of human senses. Participants performed multiple motion tasks (walking, balancing, running) in three conditions: a physical r…

Structural and effective brain connectivity underlying biological motion detection.

The perception of actions underwrites a wide range of socio-cognitive functions. Previous neuroimaging and lesion studies identified several components of the brain network for visual biological motion (BM) processing, but interactions among these components and their relationship to behavior remain little understood. Here, using a recently developed integrative analysis of structural and effective connectivity derived from high angular resolution diffusion imaging (HARDI) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we assess the cerebro-cerebellar network for processing of camouflaged p…

Visual Occlusion Decreases Motion Sickness in a Flight Simulator.

Sensory conflict theories of motion sickness (MS) assert that symptoms may result when incoming sensory inputs (e.g., visual and vestibular) contradict each other. Logic suggests that attenuating input from one sense may reduce conflict and hence lessen MS symptoms. In the current study, it was hypothesized that attenuating visual input by blocking light entering the eye would reduce MS symptoms in a motion provocative environment. Participants sat inside an aircraft cockpit mounted onto a motion platform that simultaneously pitched, rolled, and heaved in two conditions. In the occluded condit…

Isotropically weighted intravoxel incoherent motion brain imaging at 7T.

Perfusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a promising non-invasive technique providing insights regarding the brain's microvascular arch … resolution, and specific absorption rate constraints. As an alternative, the intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) approach exploits an extension of diffusion MRI in order to estimate perfusion parameters in the human brain. Application of IVIM imaging at ultra-high field MRI might employ the advantage of a higher signal-to-noise ratio, and thereby the us …

Does Wrist Laxity Influence Three-Dimensional Carpal Bone Motion?

Previous two-dimensional (2D) studies have shown that there is a spectrum of carpal mechanics that varies between row-type motion and column-type motion as a function of wrist laxity. More recent three-dimensional (3D) studies have suggested instead that carpal bone motion is consistent across individuals. The purpose of this study was to use 3D methods to determine whether carpal kinematics differ between stiffer wrists and wrists with higher laxity. Wrist laxity was quantified using a goniometer in ten subjects by measuring passive wrist flexion-extension (FE) range of motion (ROM). In vivo …

Exhibition of stochastic resonance in vestibular tilt motion perception.

BACKGROUND: Stochastic Resonance (SR) is a phenomenon broadly described as "noise benefit". The application of subsensory electrical Stochastic Vestibular Stimulation (SVS) via electrodes behind each ear has been used to improve human balance and gait, but its effect on motion perception thresholds has not been examined. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the capability of subsensory SVS to reduce vestibular motion perception thresholds in a manner consistent with a characteristic bell-shaped SR curve. METHODS: We measured upright, head-centered, roll tilt Direction Recognition (DR) threshol…

Surface structure feature matching algorithm for cardiac motion estimation.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac diseases represent the leading cause of sudden death worldwide. During the development of cardiac diseases, the left ventricle (LV) changes obviously in structure and function. LV motion estimation plays an important role for diagnosis and treatment of cardiac diseases. To estimate LV motion accurately for cine magnetic resonance (MR) cardiac images, we develop an algorithm by combining point set matching with surface structure features of myocardium. METHODS: The structure features of myocardial wall are described by estimating the normal directions of points locating on …

Electrophysiological correlates and psychoacoustic characteristics of hearing-motion synaesthesia.

People with hearing-motion synaesthesia experience sounds from moving or changing (e.g. flickering) visual stimuli. This phenomenon may be one of the most common forms of synaesthesia but it has rarely been studied and there are no studies of its neural basis. We screened for this in a sample of 200+ individuals, and estimated a prevalence of 4.2%. We also document its characteristics: it tends to be induced by physically moving stimuli (more so than static stimuli which imply motion or trigger illusory motion); and the psychoacoustic features are simple (e.g. "whooshing") with some systematic…

Benign Rolandic epilepsy presenting like paradoxical vocal fold motion.

Paradoxical vocal fold motion (PVFM) is characterized by vocal fold adduction during respiration. Benign Rolandic epilepsy (BRE) is the most common childhood epilepsy and can cause oropharyngolaryngeal or facial manifestations. A 9-year-old male presented with intermittent apnea lasting 30-60 seconds and presumed PVFM. The patient's physical and fiberoptic exam were normal. He was admitted and found to have episodes of oxygen desaturation, neck twitching, and tongue burning. An EEG revealed focal epilepsy. After starting anti-epileptic medications, he had resolution of symptoms. Our patient wa…

Biological Motion Perception, Brain Responses, and Schizotypal Personality Disorder.

IMPORTANCE: Exploration of the ability to process socially relevant events portrayed by biological motion and to identify underlying neuronal processes can provide clues for understanding the pathophysiology of psychosis. Individuals with schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) have pervasive interpersonal deficits and odd behaviors. An understanding of the neural mechanisms involved in the perception of biological motion and the relation of activity to clinical symptoms in those mechanisms is needed. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the specificity of brain regions responsive to biological motion pe…

Real-time simulation of hand motion for prosthesis control.

Individuals with hand amputation suffer substantial loss of independence. Performance of sophisticated prostheses is limited by the ability to control them. To achieve natural and simultaneous control of all wrist and hand motions, we propose to use real-time biomechanical simulation to map between residual EMG and motions of the intact hand. Here we describe a musculoskeletal model of the hand using only extrinsic muscles to determine whether real-time performance is possible. Simulation is 1.3 times faster than real time, but the model is locally unstable. Methods are discussed to increase s…

Objects Versus Shadows as Influences on Perceived Object Motion.

The motion trajectory of an object's cast shadow has been shown to alter the perceived trajectory of a casting object, an effect that holds even if the cast shadow appears unrealistic. This raises the question of whether a cast shadow per se is necessary for this influence, a question that has been studied only with stationary targets. We examined the relative influence of a shadow and a spherical object on the perceived motion trajectory of an identical spherical object, using a paradigm similar to Kersten, Mamassian, and Knill's ball-in-box animation. We recorded both depth and height estima…

Biomechanical Evaluation of Carpal Kinematics during Simulated Wrist Motion.

Background Flexion and extension of the wrist is achieved primarily at the radiocarpal and midcarpal joints. Carpal kinematics have been investigated, although there remains no consensus regarding the relative contribution of each bone to wrist motion. Purpose To determine the kinematics of the scaphoid, lunate, and capitate during unconstrained simulated wrist flexion/extension and to examine the effect of motion direction on the contribution of each bone. Materials and Methods Seven cadaveric upper extremities were tested in a passive wrist simulator with 10N tone loads applied to the wrist …
