Clinical utility of an artificial intelligence radiomics-based tool for risk stratification of pulmonary nodules.

BACKGROUND: Clinical utility data on pulmonary nodule (PN) risk stratification biomarkers are lacking. We aimed to determine the incremental predictive value and clinical utility of using an artificial intelligence (AI) radiomics-based computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) tool in addition to routine clinical information to risk stratify PNs among real-world patients. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of patients with PNs who underwent lung biopsy. We collected clinical data and used a commercially available AI radiomics-based CAD tool to calculate a Lung Cancer Prediction (LCP) sco

A safe and novel method for video-assisted thoracic surgery preoperative localization of small pulmonary nodules by using ZT medical glue (2-octyl cyanoacrylate).

BACKGROUND: Accurate and fast localization of small pulmonary nodules is required for local pulmonary resection. In this study, we introduced and assessed a novel technique for the preoperative localization of small pulmonary nodules by using ZT medical glue (2-octyl cyanoacrylate). METHODS: 101 patients who had a combined total of 106 small pulmonary nodules located by ZT glue and 53patients with 53 small pulmonary nodules located by hookwire were selected. Guided by computed tomography (CT), the surgeon injected certain volume ZT glue into an area adjacent to the small pulmonary nodule, the

Imaging Features and Clinical Decision Analysis of 110 Cases of Intrapulmonary Lymph Nodes.

OBJECTIVE: Through the summary and analysis of large samples, the characteristic imaging manifestations of intrapulmonary lymph nodes (IPLNs) were quantified, and two corresponding rating tables were developed. These rating tables could be used to distinguish the IPLNs from primary lung cancer, so as to improve the diagnostic accuracy and help clinicians make correct judgments and decisions. METHODS: A total of 82 patients with 110 IPLNs and 35 patients with primary lung cancer lesions were collected from June 2017 to December 2018. All lesions were solid nodules of less than 12 mm in diamete

Pulmonary Nodule Clinical Trial Data Collection and Intelligent Differential Diagnosis for Medical Internet of Things.

In this paper, the medical Internet of things (IoT) is used to pool data from clinical trials of pulmonary nodules, and on this basis, intelligent differential diagnosis techniques are investigated. A filtered orthogonal frequency division multiplexing model based on polarisation coding is proposed, where the input data are fed to a modulator after polarisation cascade coding, and the system performance is analysed under a medical Internet of things modulated additive Gaussian white noise channel. The above polarisation-coded filtered orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system component

Diagnosis and selection of surgical approaches for synchronous multiple primary lung cancer: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Synchronous multiple primary lung cancer (SMPLC) is a distinct clinical entity in lung cancer management. Because SMPLC differs substantially from intrapulmonary metastasis (IPM) in staging, treatment strategy, and prognosis, accurate assessment of the clonal relationship among multiple malignant pulmonary lesions is essential for treatment planning. This narrative review summarizes the diagnostic basis, preoperative assessment, and selection of surgical approaches for SMPLC and discusses bilateral surgery, residual ground-glass nodules, and future research directions

Case report: whole exome sequencing of primary cardiac angiosarcoma highlights potential for targeted therapies.

BACKGROUND: Primary cardiac angiosarcomas are rare, but they are the most aggressive type of primary cardiac neoplasms. When patients do present, it is with advanced pulmonary and/or cardiac symptoms. Therefore, many times the correct diagnosis is not made at the time of initial presentation. These patients have metastatic disease and the vast majority of these patients die within a few months after diagnosis. Currently the treatment choices are limited and there are no targeted therapies available. CASE PRESENTATION: A 56-year-old male presented with shortness of breath, night sweats, and pr

Pulmonary Mucosa-Associated Lymphoid Tissue (MALT) Lymphoma: A Diagnostic Dilemma.

Primary pulmonary lymphoma (PPL) is a rare clonal proliferation of lymphoid tissue confined to the lungs, representing only 0.5%-1% of all lung neoplasms. Pulmonary mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma is the most common subtype and is often associated with chronic inflammation and autoimmune conditions. Diagnosis is challenging given its indolent course, nonspecific clinical features and variable radiographic presentations. We report a 64-year-old female with systemic lupus erythematosus who was incidentally found to have multiple pulmonary nodules. Serial imaging revealed interv…

Pulmonary sclerosing hemangioma with pleural dissemination: report of a case.

Pulmonary sclerosing hemangioma is relatively rare and is usually considered a benign tumor. There have been no reports of pulmonary sclerosing hemangioma with pleural dissemination. This report presents an extremely rare case of pulmonary sclerosing hemangioma with pulmonary dissemination. A 57-year-old woman was found to have an abnormal shadow in the right lower lung field on chest X-ray. Chest computed tomography (CT) indicated a 2.5-cm mass in the right lower lobe. A bronchoscopic biopsy failed to identify malignant cells, which led to the patient undergoing an excisional lung biopsy. Int

A Rare Case of Coexistence of Borderline Lepromatous Leprosy with Tuberculosis Verrucosa Cutis.

Occurrence of pulmonary tuberculosis with leprosy is known but association of cutaneous tuberculosis with leprosy is rare. We report a case of borderline lepromatous leprosy coexistent with tuberculosis verrucosa cutis in a 29-year-old male, who presented with multiple skin coloured nodules and hyperkeratotic scaly lesions of 3-month duration. Dual infections are associated with high mortality and morbidity. Therefore early diagnosis and management helps to reduce mortality and to mitigate the effects of morbidity.

Tuberculosis of the manubriosternal joint and concurrent asymptomatic active pulmonary tuberculosis in a patient presenting with a chest wall mass.

A 62-year-old woman presented to our hospital with an anterior chest wall swelling. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging showed findings consistent with an infectious arthritis of the manubriosternal joint, and CT images also demonstrated multiple centrilobular nodules in both lungs, suggesting an infectious bronchiolitis. A CT-guided fine needle aspiration of a presternal mass yielded growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Bronchoalveolar lavage confirmed an active pulmonary tuberculosis. Septic arthritis of the manubriosternal joint is exceedingly rare.

Pulmonary complications after bone marrow transplantation: high-resolution CT and pathologic findings.

A wide variety of pulmonary complications occur in bone marrow transplant (BMT) recipients and are a major cause of morbidity and death. High-resolution computed tomography (CT) is excellent in the detection of pulmonary abnormalities, but these findings are generally nonspecific. However, the different complications, which reflect the immunologic status of the patients, occur in three phases. This pattern can be used to interpret CT scans. The neutropenic phase (up to 3 weeks after BMT) is characterized by fungal infections, notably angioinvasive aspergillosis, alveolar hemorrhage, pulmonary
