Role of potassium in the regulation of systemic physiological function during exercise.

In exercise, potassium (K+) is released from contracting muscle predominately through K+ channels associated with the repolarization phase of the action potential. Increases in extracellular K+ are directly related to increases in metabolic rate and may reach concentrations as high as 8-9 mM in the arterial blood during exhaustive work. Exercise-induced hyperkalaemia has been implicated in several physiological processes, in particular skeletal muscle fatigue, hyperaemia, pressor reflex, arterial chemosensitivity and myocardial stability. There is no direct evidence to show that hyperkalaemia …

A wearable functional electrical stimulation device with a movable electrode for motor point tracking.

Functional electrical stimulation is widely applied in the rehabilitation of individuals with cerebrovascular disease or spinal cord injury but is limited by rapid muscle fatigue. We present a novel stimulation strategy based on real-time motor point tracking using a wearable functional electrical stimulation device with a movable electrode. A crank-slider mechanism drives the electrode to follow the biceps brachii motor point trajectory according to elbow joint angle, aiming to optimize stimulation site and reduce fatigue. Seven healthy male participants compared this approach with time-shift…

Increased levels of intramuscular cytokines in patients with jaw muscle pain.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate cytokine levels in the masseter muscle, their response to experimental tooth-clenching and their relation to pain, fatigue and psychological distress in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) myalgia. METHODS: Forty women, 20 with TMD myalgia (Diagnostic Criteria for TMD) and 20 age-matched healthy controls participated. Intramuscular microdialysis was performed to sample masseter muscle cytokines. After 140 min (baseline), a 20-minute tooth-clenching task was performed (50% of maximal voluntary contraction force). Tongue protrusion strength and fatiguability: relationship to apnoea/hypopnoea index and age.

The sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome (SAHS) is characterized by retroglossal or retropalatal narrowing. The site of obstruction, and the fact that negative pressure in the upper airway increases retroglossal airway size, suggests that tongue muscles may play a role in the maintenance of upper airway patency. We therefore hypothesized that tongue protrusion strength and fatiguability may be predictors of apnoea/hypopnoea index, vary with age and may be different in SAHS patients and normal subjects. Maximal strength (Fmax) and fatiguability (measured as the total time subjects were able to maint

Further, dynamic disturbances such as electromechanical delay (EMD) and muscle fatigue must be considered during the control design process. This ensures stability and control performance despite disparate dynamics of FES and electric motor. In this paper, a general framework to coordinate FES of multiple gait-governing muscles with e …

A new case definition of Neuro-Inflammatory and Oxidative Fatigue (NIOF), a neuroprogressive disorder, formerly known as chronic fatigue syndrome or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis: results of multivariate pattern recognition methods and external validation by neuro-immune biomarkers.

BACKGROUND: Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) is characterized by neuro-psychiatric (e.g. depression, irritability, sleep disorders, autonomic symptoms and neurocognitive defects) and physio-somatic (fatigue, a flu-like malaise, hyperalgesia, irritable bowel, muscle pain and tension) symptoms. New ME/CFS case definitions based on consensus criteria among experts are largely inadequate, e.g. those of the US Institute of Medicine . OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to delineate a new case definition of ME/CFS based on pattern recognition methods and usi

The failing inspiratory muscles under normoxic and hypoxic conditions.

The effects of hypoxemia on inspiratory muscle fatigue were assessed in 4 normal subjects. They breathed to exhaustion through high inspiratory resistances producing an inspiratory mouth pressure (Pm) of about 80% of maximal mouth pressure. The endurance time (tlim) during hypoxia (13% O2) was found to be shorter than that while breathing room air at equal inspiratory mouth pressures. Endurance time during hypoxia was also compared with that while breathing room air at equal rates of energy consumption (C), assuming that C is proportional to: Formula: (See Text). At these equal rates, enduranc…

Effect of varying load magnitude on diaphragmatic glutathione metabolism during loaded breathing.

Some studies have suggested that protective mechanisms downregulate diaphragm activity during loaded breathing so as to prevent respiratory-muscle fatigue. Other work has indicated, however, that loading can sometimes elicit significant diaphragmatic fatigue, and that the development of fatigue may be related to alterations in diaphragmatic glutathione concentrations. One potential explanation for these discrepant observations is that the mechanism of respiratory failure may vary as a function of load magnitude, and that some loads evoke little fatigue whereas others produce substantial fatigu…

Contractile properties of slow and fast skeletal muscles from protease activated receptor-1 null mice.

INTRODUCTION: Protease-activated receptors (PARs) may play a role in skeletal muscle development. We compared the contractile properties of slow-twitch soleus muscles and fast-twitch extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles from PAR-1 null and littermate control mice. METHODS: Contractile function was measured using a force transducer system. Fiber type proportions were determined using immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Soleus muscles from PAR-1 null mice exhibited longer contraction times, a leftward shift in the force-stimulation frequency relationship, and decreased fatiguability compared wit

Therapeutic potential of ginseng and ginsenosides on muscle wasting disorders: Cachexia, sarcopenia, anorexia, and aging.

Muscle wasting disorders mainly arise from appetite loss, chronic diseases, prolonged immobilization, and aging. Chronic diseases such as cancer, stroke, neurological diseases, heart and kidney dysfunction are the primary reasons for muscle mass loss. Muscle atrophy caused by an imbalance between protein synthesis and degradation in myocytes and the severe muscle-wasting conditions include cachexia, sarcopenia, anorexia, and fatigue. Cachexia is characterized by loss of >5% of body weight or a body mass index (BMI) < 20 kg/m2. Sarcopenia is characterized by age-associated declines in muscle ma

Growth hormone excess and sternohyoid muscle mechanics in rats.

In vitro isotonic and isometric mechanical properties of the sternohyoid (SH) muscle, an upper airway dilator muscle, were studied in rats with a growth hormone (GH)-secreting tumour (GH tumour group; n = 10). The effects of muscle fatigue were also studied. Stress and shortening were measured in muscles contracting from zero load up to isometric load under tetanic conditions. Isometric stress and maximum unloaded shortening velocity were determined and compared with values obtained from control rats (n = 10). Crossbridge kinetics and energetics and mechanical efficiency were calculated from H…
