Integrating osteopathic manipulative treatment into prenatal care visits in a family medicine resident clinic.

Literature describing the integration of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) during prenatal care visits in a resident clinic setting are scarce. Concise and readily accessible resources reviewing OMT in pregnancy are limited. We sought to integrate OMT into routine prenatal care appointments in a family medicine resident clinic setting and create a concise resource for those performing OMT in pregnancy. Musculoskeletal (MSK) pain in pregnancy is common. Specifically, low back pain (LBP) often accompanies pregnancy and may negatively impact sleep, the ability to work, and the ability to c

Database coverage and their use in systematic reviews regarding spinal manipulative therapy: an exploratory study.

BackgroundSystematic reviews (SRs) of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are considered one of the most reliable study types. Through a systematic and thorough literature search, researchers aim to collect all research relevant to their purpose. The selection of databases can be challenging and depend on the topic of interest. The Cochrane Handbook suggests searching at least the following three databases: Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, and EMBASE. However, this is not always sufficient for reviews on the musculoskeletal field in general. This study aimed to examine the frequency and choice of da

Kinematic analysis of impairments and compensatory motor behavior during prosthetic grasping in below-elbow amputees.

After a major upper limb amputation, the use of myoelectric prosthesis as assistive devices is possible. However, these prostheses remain quite difficult to control for grasping and manipulation of daily life objects. The aim of the present observational case study is to document the kinematics of grasping in a group of 10 below-elbow amputated patients fitted with a myoelectric prosthesis in order to describe and better understand their compensatory strategies. They performed a grasping to lift task toward 3 objects (a mug, a cylinder and a cone) placed at two distances within the reaching ar

Factors affecting veterinary perception of the prevalence of back pain and dysfunction in dogs and horses.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of back pain in humans has been extensively reported, but in dogs it is unknown. In horses, research on the prevalence of back pain exists, but with reports ranging from 1% to 94%, indicating a data deficiency. METHODS: Veterinarians were surveyed about their perception of the prevalence of back pain and dysfunction in dogs and horses for 6 different clinical scenarios. The respondents' education background and physical examination techniques were recorded. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Perceptions of the prevalence of back pain and dysfunction varied widely both withi

Prevalence of low back pain among Saudi radiographers.

INTRODUCTION: Low back pain (LBP) is a leading cause of work-related musculoskeletal disorders among healthcare professionals, with diagnostic radiographers identified as a high-risk group due to patient handling, equipment manipulation, and prolonged static postures. Despite extensive international research, evidence on LBP among radiographers in Saudi Arabia remains limited. This study aimed to assess the prevalence, impact, and risk factors of LBP among Saudi radiographers. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among radiographers employed in Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire captu

No increased risk of spinal cerebrospinal fluid leak after spinal manipulative therapy: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks, a rare but debilitating condition, have been described following spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) in case reports. However, the nature of the potential association between SMT and CSF leak is uncertain, and symptoms such as neck pain or headache may reflect preexisting leaks rather than effects of SMT. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis of no significant association between SMT and spinal CSF leak, comparing chiropractic SMT recipients to matched controls undergoing physical therapist-supervised therapeutic exercises (PTE). METHODS: We sear

Olfactory and cognitive functioning in patients with fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a complex syndrome characterized by chronic musculoskeletal pain. Previous research has found impaired olfactory function and cognitive deficits in patients with fibromyalgia. In non-clinical population (middle-aged and elderly populations) an association has been found between olfactory function and cognitive impairment. Therefore, olfactory impairment identification could be considered as a reliable and early marker predicting the decline of cognitive function in mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Nevertheless, the relationship between cog

Risk factors and clinical presentation of craniocervical arterial dissection: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Craniocervical arterial dissection is a major cause of ischaemic stroke in young adults. The pathogenesis is not fully understood but is thought to be related to a combination of an intrinsic weakness in the arterial wall and an external trigger. Intrinsic susceptibility is thought to be a generalised arteriopathy, vascular anomaly or genetic predisposition. Proposed extrinsic factors include recent viral infection and minor mechanical trauma to the neck, including neck manipulation, which has raised concerns amongst manual practitioners in particular as to the appropriate screenin

Investigating the efficacy of osteopathic manipulative treatment for intractable hiccups: a pilot study.

CONTEXT: Intractable hiccups is a rare medical condition defined as daily hiccups continuing for more than 30 days and is recognized by the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) and NIH Genetic and Rare Diseases (GARD) Information Center. Hiccups are spasmodic contractions of the respiratory muscles, triggered by activation of the hiccup reflex arc. Intractable hiccups can occur if this arc is chronically or aberrantly activated. The hiccup reflex arc has three components: (1) afferent pathways involving the phrenic, sympathetic, and vagal nerves; (2) central processing centers withi

Neuropilin-1 functions as a proviral and immunoregulatory host factor during Chikungunya virus infection.

UNLABELLED: Neuropilin-1 (NRP1) is a transmembrane glycoprotein involved in angiogenesis, neurodevelopment, inflammation, cancer driven immune suppression, and immune homeostasis. However, its contribution to virus-induced immune responses is not explored. Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a re-emerging arthritogenic alphavirus that causes severe arthralgia, and myalgia, accompanied by heightened inflammatory cytokine responses. The host factors that drive these inflammatory responses, however, remain poorly defined. Here, in this current study, the role of NRP1 in CHIKV infection was investigated

Body Fat Percentage But Not BMI Was Related to Clinical Function in Patients With Adhesive Capsulitis After Manipulation Under Anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: Adhesive capsulitis can substantially impair shoulder function, and manipulation under anesthesia is commonly used for patients with persistent symptoms, yet outcomes vary widely. Previous research has suggested that obesity, commonly assessed through BMI, influences recovery in musculoskeletal conditions. However, BMI does not differentiate between fat and lean mass, which may be more relevant to tissue healing and functional recovery. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Does body fat percentage, rather than BMI, predict clinical outcomes after manipulation under anesthesia for adhesive caps

The Multisystem Effects of Simulated Agricultural Whole Body Vibration on Acute Sensorimotor, Physical, and Cognitive Performance.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to whole body vibration (WBV) is common in construction, agriculture, mining, and transportation. There is strong epidemiological evidence linking WBV with adverse health outcomes in the long-term, including low back pain. Fortunately, WBV exposure guidelines to prevent long-term musculoskeletal disorders and discomfort exist. In the shorter-term, it has been speculated that occupational levels of WBV may lead to increased risk of vehicle accidents and falls during egress; however, the acute effects of different vibration intensities remain poorly understood and it is unce
