Delayed complications of radiotherapy treatment for nasopharyngeal carcinoma: imaging findings.

Radiotherapy is used to treat a wide variety of head and neck tumours that arise in and around the skull base. The delayed effects of radiation damages a range of structures, including the nervous system, bone, major vessels, mucus membranes, pituitary and salivary glands, as well as increasing the risk of radiation-induced neoplasms. In this review the complications resulting from radiation treatment for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), a cancer treated with a high dose of radiation to a fairly large region, are illustrated. Many patients with NPC have a long-term survival, so are at risk of d

[Relationship between radiosensitivity of nasopharyngeal carcinoma and MDR1 gene polymorphism].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between human multidrug resistancel gene (MDR1) polymorphisms and the radiosensitivity of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). METHODS: Blood samples were collected from 59 NPC patients, who were devided into radiosensitive or radioresistant groups according to their responses to radiation therapy. The genotypes for MDR1 polymorphisms (G2677T in exon 21 and C3435T in exon 26) and their haplotypes were determined by PCR and restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. The results were further confirmed by sequencing. RESULTS: The 3435CC genotype was

[Diagnosis value of nasopharyngo-fiberscope and CT for microfocal nasopharyngeal carcinoma].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the value of nasopharyngo-fiberscope and CT in diagnosing microfocal Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC) and the prevalent area, the nasopharynx, where the NPC usually initially developed from. METHOD: From October, 2003 to October,2005, the data of original microfocus of 36 pathologically confirmed NPC were reviewed retrospectively. These cases were examined by nasopharyngo-fiberscope and CT strengthening scanning. RESULT: On clinical examination, only 2 cases (5.6%) were found to have original micro-tumor in the recess, the other 34 cases (94.4%) had developed from the oth

Nasopharyngeal carriage of penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae in healthy children.

Streptococcus pneumoniae carriage is a risk factor for the development of respiratory system infections and the spread of penicillin-resistant strains. The aim of this study was to investigate nasopharyngeal carriage of S. pneumoniae in healthy children and resistance to penicillin and other antimicrobials and to assess related risk factors. Nasopharyngeal specimens collected from healthy children less than six years of age, visiting a Mother and Child Health Center for health control, were investigated microbiologically between February-March 2004. Carriage rate was 37.2% (n=112/301); 33.9% i

Appraisal of clinical profile and management of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma in malaysia.

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a benign but locally invasive tumour. Patients are usually in their adolescent age and present with epistaxis and nasal blockage. Diagnosis is based on clinical evaluation and the C.T. scan findings. Pre-operative superselective embolisation (SSE) and surgical excision is the treatment of choice. The out patient clinic of ORL-HNS hospital of University Science Malaysia received 25 referrals, all male, majority between 9-13 years of age and few adolescents. Clinically the patients were consistent with symptoms of recurrent epistaxis and nasal blocka

Repair oronasal fistula in a treated juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma patient.

OBJECTIVE: The juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a benign neoplasm that affects mostly young males. Preoperative embolisation is an accepted treatment to reduce perioperative bleeding, however, severe complications may accompany these invasive procedures. CASE REPORT: One 14-year-old JNA patient with severe epistaxis was transferred to us for treatment. Unfortunately, a left middle cerebral artery infarction occurred during the embolisation procedure. Right side hemiplegia and left eye blindness were noted. Nine months later, another course of embolisation and surgical treatment w

Genetic polymorphisms of the DNA repair gene and risk of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

CONTEXT: X-ray repair cross-complementing groups 1 and 3 (XRCC1 and XRCC3) and xeroderma pigmentosum group D (XPD) are mainly involved in base excision repair, homologous recombination repair, and nucleotide excision repair of DNA repair pathways, respectively. Previous studies have demonstrated that their gene polymorphisms were associated with some cancer susceptibility. OBJECTIVE AND DESIGN: To investigate the effect of XPD Lys751Gln, XRCC1 Arg399Gln, Arg194Trp, Arg280His, and XRCC3 Thr241Met polymorphisms on the risk of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), a population-based case-control study

Epigenetic inactivation of CHFR in nasopharyngeal carcinoma through promoter methylation.

Chromosomal instability (CIN) is a cytogenetic hallmark of human cancers. Increasing evidence suggests that impairment of mitotic checkpoint is causally associated with CIN. CHFR is one of the mitotic checkpoint regulators and it delays chromosome condensation in response to mitotic stress. Epigenetic inactivation of CHFR through promoter CpG hypermethylation may lead to CIN and has been reported in several human cancers. In this study, we investigated the CHFR gene expression in a panel of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), prostate, ovarian, and breast cancer cell lines. We found that the expre

Parathyroid hormone expression in a patient with metastatic nasopharyngeal rhabdomyosarcoma and hypercalcemia.

Ectopic PTH secretion by tumor cells has been described as the cause of hypercalcemia associated with malignancy in the absence of osteolytic bone lesions. Although there have been case reports of elevated PTH and hypercalcemia in patients with rhabdomyosarcoma, to date ectopic PTH secretion by malignant cells has not been definitively shown. The possibility of PTH production by pleural-based metastatic nasopharyngeal rhabdomyosarcoma cells in a 62-yr-old Japanese male with hypercalcemia was investigated. The patient's serum PTH level was found to be elevated at 62.22 pmol/L, and pleural fluid

A very rare cause of recurrent apnea: congenital nasopharyngeal teratoma.

A three-month-old girl patient born at the 37th week of gestation as one of twins was admitted to our hospital with cardiac arrest. There was past medical history of multiple hospitalizations with symptoms of cyanosis, respiratory distress, and frequent and severe attacks of apnea since her birth. On nasopharyngeal computerized tomography a mass (25x24 mm) occupying the right side of the nasopharynx was detected. The pathological evaluation of the excised mass revealed benign teratoma. After the removal of the nasopharyngeal mass under general anesthesia, respiratory distress and attacks of ap

RASSF1A is a target tumor suppressor from 3p21.3 in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Deletion on the short arm of chromosome 3 is one of the most important genetic abnormalities in the tumorigenesis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Both physical mapping and functional studies have targeted an NPC-related tumor suppressor gene(s) to chromosome 3p21.3. We have reported recently that RASSF1A gene, located on a 120-kb minimal deletion region on 3p21.3, was frequently inactivated by promoter hypermethylation in NPC. We further confirmed that RASSF1A is the critical target tumor suppressor from 3p21.3, with the evidence that loss of expression and aberrant methylation of the other

A rare polymorphism of the COX7B2 gene in a Cantonese family with nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is the most common head and neck cancer in southern China, and the genetic susceptibility is believed to play an important role in the aetiology of this malignancy. In our previous studies, one candidate susceptibility locus has been mapped to chromosome 4p11-p14 in a subset of NPC families. In the present study, we screened the cytochrome oxidase VIIb2 (COX7B2) gene which resides in this region and investigated the relationship of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of this gene with these familial NPC patients. We identified five novel SNPs in this gene, amo
