Primary pulmonary NUT midline carcinoma: An elusive and a rare diagnostic entity.

Nuclear protein in testis (NUT) midline carcinoma is a poorly differentiated tumor, is more common in midline anatomic sites, and involves young adults and children mainly. Primary pulmonary NUT midline carcinoma (NMC) is a rare and poorly defined entity in the prevailing literature. Being a highly aggressive and fatal neoplasm, it gets incumbent for the oncologists and the pathologists to be aware of this entity as it holds distinct management protocol and prognosis. Currently, BET inhibitors (BETi) and histone deactylase inhibitors have shown promising results as targeted therapies in clinic

Primary pulmonary undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma: A rare malignant lung tumor.

Undifferentiated Pleomorphic Sarcoma (UPS) is a common soft tissue sarcoma that can develop in various organs, but lung involvement is usually due to metastasis. UPS originating primarily in the lungs is called primary pulmonary undifferentiated pleomorphic Sarcoma (PPUPS) and is exceptionally rare. It is a high-grade pleomorphic neoplasm with no identifiable lines of differentiation. Thus, it is essentially a diagnosis of exclusion that requires extensive clinical, radiographic and histopathological evaluation. Herein we report the case of a 49-year-old gentleman who presented with anemia and

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor of the ovary: A rare but poor prognostic disease in a young woman!

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare, aggressive neoplasm of uncertain histogenesis that preferentially involves the abdominal and pelvic cavities. DSRCT mainly develops in adolescent and young adults with a strong male predominance; the male to female ratio is 4:1. Ovarian location is exceptional. DSRCT generally develops in the abdomen and have a tendency towards peritoneal spread, with subsequent metastasis to distant lymph nodes, liver and lungs. It is a poorly understood malignancy with a very characteristic morphology, immunophenotype, cytogenetic features, and poor prog

Metastatic melanoma of unknown origin mimicking neurofibromatosis.

We present an unusual case of metastatic melanoma in a young patient with imaging appearance resembling neurofibromatosis. A 36-year-old-man with a history of cervical radiculopathy presented with cauda equina syndrome. An MRI was performed for further evaluation demonstrating multiple intradural, extramedullary enhancing lesions in the thoracic and lumbar spine, as well as extra-axial enhancing lesions with involvement of the lateral ventricles and posterior fossa. Bilateral pulmonary masses were found on chest CT. Lung lesions were biopsied and positive for metastatic melanoma. Melanoma is t

Two friends with eroded nodules on the ears: atypical fibroxanthoma case report.

Atypical fibroxanthoma is an uncommon mesenchymal tumor that manifests clinically as a reddish papule or nodule in sun-exposed areas of the body. The clinical presentation is not specific and histology and immunohistochemistry are both necessary for a correct diagnosis. Surgery is the gold standard of therapy. Recurrence and metastasis should be excluded with a follow-up at 6 months, since this tumor should nowadays be considered a medium-grade neoplasm, rather than low-grade as previously believed. We report the case of two friends who came to our hospital during the same period, complaining

A Rare Case of Zosteriform Cutaneous Metastases from a Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma.

From a clinical point of view, the most common presentations of cutaneous metastatic disease are papules and nodules. However, a wide morphological spectrum of lesions has been described, including erythematous patches or plaques, inflammatory erysipelas-like lesions, diffuse sclerodermiform lesions with induration of the skin, telangiectatic papulovesicles, purpuric plaques mimicking vasculitis, and alopecia areata like scalp lesions. The so-called zosteriform pattern has been described to be in few cases and to the best of our knowledge has never been described associated with a metastasis o

[Intraabdominal mass with difficult diagnosis: Solitary fibrous tumor].

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare neoplasm of mesenchymal origin. The most commonly reported locations are the pleura and meninges. Less frequently, SFT manifests as an asymptomatic mass in the pancreas, liver, peritoneum or kidney. Clinical and radiological findings have failed to provide any specific diagnostic pattern but allow malignant development to be suspected due to infiltration or metastasis. In addition, preoperative cytology often yields inconclusive or misleading results. Therefore the definitive diagnosis is achieved after both surgical resection and immunohistochemical anal

Paclitaxel and cisplatin with concurrent radiotherapy followed by surgery in locally advanced thymic carcinoma.

Thymic carcinoma is a rare neoplasm with a poor prognosis. We report the clinical course of a patient who received complete surgical resection after effective induction treatment. A 72-year-old woman with advanced thymic carcinoma (squamous cell carcinoma, stage IVb) was considered as nonresectable due to invasion of neighboring organs and mediastinal lymph node metastasis. Two cycles of chemotherapy, consisting of paclitaxel (180 mg/m2) plus cisplatin (80 mg/m2), combined with thoracic radiotherapy (total 54 Gy) were performed concurrently and complete radical resection could then be performe

Abomasal and uterine adenocarcinomas with ovarian metastasis in a captive elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni).

A captive, 20-year-old female elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) euthanized due to progressive lameness and weight loss was presented to Colorado State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory for postmortem examination. Within the uterus there was a poorly demarcated, multilobulated mass measuring 10 cm in diameter. Histologically the tumor was an adenocarcinoma. Histologic examination of the ovaries revealed unilateral metastasis. A focal, 1-cm diameter adenocarcinoma was identified within the abomasum; this tumor was histologically distinct from the neoplasm found in the uterus and ovary. Alth

Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma of the maxillary sinus: a report of two cases.

Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC) is a highly aggressive neoplasm and a histologically distinctive variant of squamous cell carcinoma. Since the first description by Wain et al. in 1986, only 18 cases with BSCC in the nasal cavity or in the paranasal cavity have been reported in the English literature. We report herein two cases of BSCC of the maxillary sinus. Case 1 was 78-year-old man, who received preoperative radiotherapy and operation. He was alive without disease for 25 months after the operation. Case 2 was a 60-year-old man who received radiotherapy without operation. He died of

Inflammatory pseudotumor of the liver in association with a gastrointestinal stromal tumor: a case report.

Inflammatory pseudotumor of the liver is a rare benign lesion that can mimic a malignant liver neoplasm. A case of inflammatory pseudotumor of the liver found in association with a malignant gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) of the small bowel was reported. The inflammatory pseudotumor was misdiagnosed as a metastasis from the GIST by frozen section. A correct diagnosis was made only after histopathological examination of the paraffin section of the resected specimen. This case is particularly interesting because of the association of the two rare pathological entities and the diagnostic d

"Early" cancer of the larynx: the concept as defined by clinicians, pathologists, and biologists.

Since a great deal of confusion surrounds the different uses made by clinicians, pathologists, and biologists of the term, this paper clarifies the concept of "early" cancer of the larynx. Clinically, this is usually a glottic neoplasm in which full cordal mobility is still present; early supraglottic cancer is infrequent, and usually a chance finding. Whatever the site, early laryngeal cancer is a minimally invasive neoplastic lesion that does not invade the muscle or cartilage, but is still capable of metastasis. Being confined to the lamina propria, it is more than a carcinoma in situ but l

[Horizontal subglottic laryngectomy in treating cancers of the laryngeal vestibule and vallecula. Apropos of 65 cases].

A retrospective review of 65 patients treated with supraglottic laryngectomy from 1980 to 1992 in the Department of Otolaryngology of Rennes was performed. Tumor localisation was vallecula in 38 cases and epiglottis in 27 cases. Functional and carcinologic results are studied for all patients, when base tongue is involved and for patients operated after radiotherapy. The 3 years survival rate was 62,2% and 5 years survival rate 44%. A local failure occurred in 15,4% and 4,6% developed cervical metastasis. Another neoplasm on superior aerodigestive tract is the first cause of death for epiglott

Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma of the foot, an unusual location: case report and review of the literature.

We present a case of primary mesenchymal chondrosarcoma of the proximal phalanx of the first toe. The bones of the foot represent an infrequent primary site for this neoplasm. The tumour consisted of layers of undifferentiated round cells with scanty cytoplasm and hyperchromatic nuclei. The presence of brain, lung, and left auricle metastasis was demonstrated, and the patient died due to brain edema 18 days after admission. Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma is a rare tumor that more frequently involves the pelvic bones, the femur, and the humerus. To our knowledge, only nine cases of primary mesenchy

Fortuitous imaging of a primary adrenocortical carcinoma with Tc-99m HDP.

The importance of evaluating nonfunctional adrenal masses in the right clinical setting is discussed. A 60-year-old man was initially diagnosed of having a localized lung carcinoma. Metastatic work-up showed an adrenal mass that was not deemed to be related to the lung primary. Although biochemical testing revealed that the adrenal mass was nonfunctional, adrenal scintigraphy was not performed. On resection, the lung neoplasm was shown to be a poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. Radiologic follow-up of the adrenal finding was recommended. A year later, the patient presented with an abdominal

Verrucous carcinoma of the bilharzial bladder. Impact of invasiveness on survival.

Verrucous carcinoma of bilharzial bladder, a rare neoplasm, is regarded as a distinct variant of squamous cell carcinoma. We studied 37 cases treated with cystectomy in the past 15 years. Despite previous reports of no local invasion and no local recurrence or distant metastasis postoperatively, we observed 60% of focal tumour transformation into invasive squamous cell carcinoma. Such transformation and dedifferentiation to squamous cell carcinoma can be expected in a high proportion of these tumours. The survival rate in the invasive cases was approximately the same as in squamous cell carcin

External expressions of internal malignancy.

Paraneoplastic conditions are cancer-connected but are not produced as a direct effect of the tumor or metastasis. Some antedate the appearance of the internal malignancy; some run a course parallel to the tumor; some follow a pattern independent of the neoplasm. They occur in a small minority of patients with cancer and are, for the most part, of unknown cause. When an external disorder is present, it may act as a marker of hidden malignancy and thus contribute to its detection, or it may serve as an indicator of successful treatment. Many of the conditions described occur commonly without an

Paravaginal wolffian duct (mesonephros) adenocarcinoma: a light and electron microscopic study.

This is a report of an adenocarcinoma of mesonephric origin studied by light microscopy, electron microscopy, and immunocytochemistry. Unlike previous reports, our lesion was located paravaginally and not in the leaves of the broad ligament or in the cervix. The light microscopic features are similar to those of previous cases in the literature. Although not specific, the ultrastructural features of the tumor are similar to those of mesonephric structures and different from those of müllerian structures. The diagnosis always should be considered when a tumor occurs at the site where mesonephri

Sclerosis in Metastatic Uterine Tumor Resembling Ovarian Sex Cord Tumor: Diagnostic Dilemma Presented by Unusual Morphology.

Uterine tumors resembling ovarian sex cord tumors (UTROSCT) are rare neoplasms that typically follow a benign course. However, metastasis occurs in rare cases and features associated with poor outcomes are only recently being described. These include: size >5 cm, at least moderate cytologic atypia, >3 mitosis per 10 high-powered fields, infiltrative borders, necrosis, GREB1 rearrangements, ESR1 rearrangements, and NCOA2/3 fusions. To our knowledge, prominent sclerosis has not been described in UTROSCT, nor has it been associated with an increased risk of metastasis. We present the case of a 51

Roles of JUN and MMP1 in lung cancer brain metastases.

Lung cancer brain metastases refer to intracranial space-occupying lesions formed by the metastasis of tumor cells from the lung to the brain parenchyma or dissemination in the meninges. The datasets GSE200563 and GSE126548 for lung cancer brain metastasis were obtained from gene expression omnibus database with the platform files GPL21697 and GPL16791. Differentially expressed genes analysis was conducted, followed by weighted gene co-expression network analysis, construction and analysis of protein-protein interaction networks, functional enrichment analysis, gene set enrichment analysis, co
