RATIONALE: Osteochondroma is a common benign bone tumor consisting of cartilage-covered bone confluent with the medullary canal of the epiphysis. Extraosseous osteochondroma shares the same appearance and histologic features as a typical osteochondroma but does not have any attachment to surrounding bone structures. Because of its low incidence, extraosseous osteochondroma is uncommon in clinical workups and thus prone to misdiagnosis. The diagnosis of extraosseous osteochondroma should be considered when there is a well-defined bony mass in the soft tissue with no direct continuity with the a

RATIONALE: Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is a rare, locally invasive but benign bone tumor. It represents one of the rarest bone diseases, with an incidence of only 0.11% of all primary bone tumors.
PATIENT CONCERNS: Herein, a case of massive and unusual DF, with simultaneous involvement of ilium and ischium, is described. A 29-year-old man suffered minor pain in his right hip for 2 years. It worsened after sudden movements, which prevented him from walking normally. Physical examination showed a limitation when the right hip was flexed and a percussion pain on the hip region. Tumour induced hypophosphataemic osteomalacia or rickets is a well delineated clinical entity. There is confusion, however, about the nomenclature and classification of the associated tumours. The tumour factor responsible for the biochemical abnormalities has also not been identified. We report here two cases: one, a 43 year old male with a soft tissue tumour in the left vastus medialis, and the other, a 25 year old female with a soft tissue tumour in the right anterior axillary fold. Reversal of biochemical abnormalities and clinical improvement occurred after removal of the tumour in both c

RATIONALE: Cancer metastatic to the oral cavity accounts for 1%-4% of all oral malignancies, spreading from a distant primary site. Nevertheless, oral metastasis is often the first presentation of primary cancer.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 53-year-old male was referred to our institution because of painful swelling of the left parotid region that did not respond to medications. A firm mass extending towards the mandbular angle had caused trismus; furthermore, the patient complained about hypoesthesia in the V3 area. No noticeable findings could be seen intraorally.
DIAGNOSIS: Computed tomography im

Myeloid sarcoma is defined as a neoplasm of myeloid blasts that involves an extramedullary site as a mass and effaces tissue architecture. Myeloid sarcoma is considered clinically to be equivalent to acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and requires appropriate therapy. As currently defined, extramedullary AML that does not form a mass is inconsistent with the diagnosis of myeloid sarcoma and the management of patients with extramedullary AML is less well defined. Furthermore, the pathogenetic relationship and clinical importance of extramedullary AML versus myeloid sarcoma is under explored. Recent s

Systemic mastocytosis (SM) is a rare blood disorder characterized by the clonal proliferation of mast cells in tissues. Mast cells release various vasoactive mediators, including histamine, leukotrienes, prostaglandins, platelet-activating factors, and cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor. Clinical manifestations can range from mild itching to severe distributive shock. In some rare cases, mastocytosis is associated with other blood disorders, such as systemic mastocytosis with associated hematologic neoplasm (SM-AHN). Almost all cases of SM exhibit a KIT point mutation. We report a rare ca

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor (PMT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasia usually located in the soft tissue and the bone. It is seen in older ages and is most commonly localized in the extremities. Here, we present a rare case of PMT located in the sinonasal region. A 56-year-old male patient was admitted with complaints of congestion in the right nasal cavity and limitation of upward gaze in the right eye. Computed tomography revealed a contrast-enhancing mass with heterogeneous density obliterating the bilateral frontal sinus, the frontoethmoidal recess, the right osteomeatal complex and the rig

Hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma (HCCC) is a rare malignant neoplasm that commonly arises in the palate, whose occurrence in other intraoral sites is extremely uncommon. We present a case of a 74 years old afro-descendant female presenting an asymptomatic swelling in the lingual region of teeth 32, 33 and 34, with four months of Evolution, promoting an area of bone resorption with imprecise margins. Incisional biopsy revealed proliferative nests of clear cells within a hyalinized fibrous connective tissue. Tumor cells showed immunohistochemical positivity for AE1/AE3, CK7, p63 and ki67 (30%),

Pleomorphic myxoid liposarcoma is an extremely rare, clinically aggressive subtype of liposarcoma that has been primarily reported in young patients. In this article, we report a case of a pleomorphic myxoid liposarcoma that presented as a second primary neoplasm in a 34-year-old man with history of primary mediastinal large B-cell lymphoma. During the clinical workup, the patient was diagnosed with a germline TP53 gene mutation and Li-Fraumeni syndrome. The tumor, a 2.9 × 2.3 × 2.0 cm well-demarcated and solid mass, was centered in the anterior chest wall soft tissue. Histologically, most of

Breast and lung cancers are the most common primary neoplasms to manifest with choroidal metastases. The incidence of choroidal metastases from metastatic lung cancer was reported to be 2-6.7%. We report a case of bilateral choroidal metastasis from non-small cell lung cancer. A 59-year-old Caucasian female patient, never a smoker, was diagnosed with stage IV lung adenocarcinoma metastatic to the pleura, bones, and the brain. Her initial scan of the chest showed innumerable soft tissue nodules and mediastinal adenopathy compatible with metastatic disease. Her initial brain MRI showed numerous

Myxoid tumors are a group of heterogeneous lesions with a voluminous myxoid matrix, which may affect any tissue in the body. The frequency of these tumors depends on their localization. On the face, the localization is most often osseous. In this case, they are odontogenic myxoma. Localization in facial soft tissues is very rare. These tumors are benign but with a high potential for local aggressiveness and recurrence. They must be treated surgically with radical exeresis and long-term follow-up.

The rising concerns of the recurrence and bone deficiency in surgical treatment of malignant bone tumors have raised an urgent need of the advance of multifunctional therapeutic platforms for efficient tumor therapy and bone regeneration. Herein, the construction of a multifunctional biomaterial system is reported by the integration of 2D Nb2 C MXene wrapped with S-nitrosothiol (RSNO)-grafted mesoporous silica with 3D-printing bioactive glass (BG) scaffolds (MBS). The near infrared (NIR)-triggered photonic hyperthermia of MXene in the NIR-II biowindow and precisely controlled nitric oxide (NO

Vascularized free fibula transfer is an attractive option for the treatment of segmental bone defects because of faster union rates, fewer fatigue fractures, rapid hypertrophy, and less resorption compared with nonvascularized bone transfer. It is classically indicated for those patients with segmental bone defects >6 to 8 cm. The presence of several peroneal artery fasciocutaneous perforators also makes the inclusion of a skin paddle possible. Although rare, the surgeon must be aware of possible complications associated with this procedure. A careful operative technique is necessary for obtai

INTRODUCTION: Paget's disease of bone (PDB) is a disease of elderly characterized by disorganized bone remodeling. Development of secondary neoplasm in PDB is a known but rare phenomenon. Development of giant cell tumor in PDB (GCT-PDB) is extremely rare, and little is known about its etiopathogenesis and management. We present a case report of such a development with a review of the literature and the role of various new modalities of treatment available in the management of this rare condition.

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) analyzes water diffusion in tissues, indirectly reflecting cellular density and aiding tumor characterization. Our objective was to explore the utility of DWI in three topics: (i) differentiation of bone and soft tissue sarcomas with respect to tumor type/grade; (ii) correlation with chemotherapy response in Ewing's sarcoma and osteosarcoma; and (iii) differentiation of benign from malignant soft tissue and bone tumors. The aim of the review article was to assess the existing literature detailing the insight that can be provided by DWI when a

Accurate detection of gene fusions is critical for the diagnosis of bone and soft tissue tumors, yet conventional gene panel testing remains costly and impractical when processing small sample numbers. Here, we present a cost-effective and scalable in-house workflow using a custom capture panel combined with nanopore sequencing and TEQUILA-based probe synthesis. We analyzed 24 sarcoma samples with known gene fusions, comprising frozen and formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) specimens. Expected fusions were detected in all 7 frozen samples and in 16 of 17 FFPE samples. Long-read sequencing

We present a novel case of a malignant transformation of an extremity soft tissue angioleiomyoma to leiomyosarcoma in a man in his late 70s who presented with a painful and increasing lump on his anterior tibia. Initial imaging and biopsy showed a benign angioleiomyoma which was excised for symptomatic reasons. An analysis of the resulting specimen revealed a 50×42×15 mm smooth muscle neoplasm consistent with angioleiomyoma with a 22×11 mm entirely intralesional nodular component in keeping with a grade 1 leiomyosarcoma. The malignant constituent of the lesion was entirely encased in benign an

FOS and FOSB proto-oncogens are involved in a wide variety of tumourigenic processes. FOS and FOSB gene rearrangements are observed in epithelioid haemangioma, pseudomyogenic haemangioendothelioma, osteoid osteoma/osteoblastoma/cementoblastoma and proliferative myositis/fasciitis. In this review, we provide an overview of FOS and FOSB, including their functions and the differences between lesions with known FOS/FOSB gene rearrangements. Additionally, we discuss the use of FOS/FOSB immunohistochemistry as a diagnostic tool for these lesions.

Osteoid osteoma (OO) is a benign osteoblastic bone tumor typically involving the diaphysis or metaphysis in long tubular bones. OO in phalanges of the great toe has been rarely reported, and it is often challenging to differentiate with subacute osteomyelitis, bone abscess, or osteoblastoma. This case report describes an uncommon case of a 13-year-old female patient with subperiosteal OO in the proximal phalanx of the great toe. The atypical location of OO should be familiarized to include appropriate differential diagnosis and to ensure accurate diagnosis by radiologic evaluations. Surgical e
