Although neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) is a relatively common autosomal dominant condition, information about its effect on mortality is limited. We used Multiple-Cause Mortality Files, compiled from U.S. death certificates by the National Center for Health Statistics, for 1983 through 1997. We identified 3,770 cases of presumed NF1 among 32,722,122 deaths in the United States, a frequency of 1/8,700, which is one-third to one-half the estimated prevalence. Mean and median ages at death for persons with NF1 were 54.4 and 59 years, respectively, compared with 70.1 and 74 years in the general popula

The cause-specific mortality (1940-1993) of 2,985 male workers employed in three oil refineries was examined using a proportionate mortality study design. Separate analyses were undertaken by race, refinery, employment status (active and retired), and time since entry into the Oil, Chemical, and Atomic Workers (OCAW) union. Proportionate cancer mortality ratio (PCMR) analyses also were conducted. Proportionate mortality ratios (PMR) were significantly increased (P < 0.05) for cancers of the lip (PMR = 384), stomach (PMR = 142), unspecified sites of the liver (PMR = 238), pancreas (PMR = 151),

Oncogenic osteomalacia is a rare disease. It is caused by a tumor that produces fibroblast growth factor 23, a hormone that decreases the tubular phosphate reabsorption and impairs renal hydroxylation of vitamin D. This leads to hyperphosphaturia with hypophosphatemia and low calcitriol levels. About 337 cases have been reported and we studied two cases; 44 and 70 year-old men who sought medical attention complaining of suffering diffuse bone pain over a period of approximately one year. In both cases, a laboratory test showed biochemical alterations compatible with a hypophosphatemic osteomal

The parapharyngeal space may be a site for tumors, especially for those developed in the deep parotid lobe. The surgical route to parapharyngeal space tumors is a challenge because of neighbor anatomic structures and the specific risk of mandibular nerve damage. The aim of this study was to describe an original lateral transmandibular route, setting aside the mandible angle and preserving the mandibular nerve.

INTRODUCTION: Typically, SCN is single and doesn't invade around tissue. In our case, tumors were multiple and had gradually grown and caused vein stenosis. This is extremely rare and unique resected multiple SCN case. In addition, I report that it was thought to be educational that even benign tumors could cause such changes.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 60-year-old female was diagnosed with 3 multilocular cystic tumors in distal pancreas by contrast enhanced computed tomography (CT) at the preoperative staging for rectal neoplasm. The diameters of cystic tumors were 22/23/29 mm. The CT showed th

Fibrillins constitute a family of large extracellular glycoproteins which multimerize to form microfibrils, an important structure in the extracellular matrix. It has long been assumed that fibrillin-2 was barely present during postnatal life, but it is now clear that fibrillin-2 molecules form the structural core of microfibrils, and are masked by an outer layer of fibrillin-1. Mutations in fibrillins give rise to heritable connective tissue disorders, including Marfan syndrome and congenital contractural arachnodactyly. Fibrillins also play an important role in matrix sequestering of members

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of 68Ga-DOTANOC positron emission tomography (PET)/CT scan in localization of culprit lesion for biopsy and required intervention [surgical excision/radiofrequency ablation (RFA)] in patients with long-standing oncogenic osteomalacia (OOM)/tumour-induced osteomalacia.
METHODS: 17 patients (8 males and 9 females) underwent 68Ga-DOTANOC PET/CT scan. The patients referred with clinical and biochemical evidence of hypophosphatemia and raised fibroblast growth factor-23. Qualitative and semi-quantitative parameters were used to identify cul

Oncogenic osteomalacia (OOM) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome induced by tumor produced phosphaturic factors, i.e. phosphatonins. The disorder is characterized by renal tubular phosphate loss, secondary to this process hypophosphatemia and defective production of active form of vitamin D. The clinical course of oncogenic osteomalacia is characterized by bone pain, pathological fractures, muscle weakness and general fatigue. Osteomalacia-associated tumors are usually located in the upper and lower limbs, with half of the lesions primarily situated in the bones. Most of them are small, slow-gro

The diagnosis of giant cell-rich lesions of bone is often problematic even for the experienced pathologist. The diagnostic key lies in multinucleated osteoclast-like giant cells and a mononuclear stroma. From the histological picture alone it is often difficult to distinguish between individual entities such as conventional giant-cell tumor of bone, non-ossifying fibroma, giant-cell tumor in hyperparathyroidism or an aneurysmal bone cyst. Furthermore, these lesions can be confused with malignant bone tumors such as giant cell-rich osteosarcoma. X-ray is important for a correct diagnosis since

The association between connective tissue disease (CTD) and malignancy has been an area of debate. Whether this relation is casual or causal, it would seem that the importance of their possible relationship is twofold. The purpose of this study is to describe the clinical features of lung cancer associated with several CTDs. Patients with CTD associated with lung cancer were retrospectively evaluated. A review of the clinical features of 153 reported cases from 1944 to the present was conducted. There were 82 females and 71 males, with a median age of 58. Histological types of lung cancer were

The effect of the administration of L-thyroxine and of methylthiouracil alone, together, in combination with stilboestrol or in the perinatal period on the induction of cervico-vaginal tumours by weekly local applications of DMBA was investigated in intact and castrate rats and compared with carcinogenesis in animals not additionally treated. In intact rats the rate of sarcoma induction is accelerated by methylthiouracil, delayed and reduced by methylthiouracil plus L-thyroxine and delayed by perinatal injection of either L-thyroxine or methylthiouracil. In castrates sarcoma induction is accele

The PLEKHH2::ALK fusion is a rarely reported gene fusion identified predominantly in lung adenocarcinomas. Tumors with this fusion have been reported to be of durable response to ALK inhibitors. We herein present the case of a 21-year-old woman with a histomorphologically heterogenous mesenchymal neoplasm of the pelvis, expressing both s100 and CD34, with subsequently identified PLEKHH2::ALK fusion. To our knowledge, only a single mesenchymal neoplasm with this gene fusion has been previously reported. We propose that this tumor represents one with a novel ALK fusion in the emerging family of

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor is an uncommon cause of a paraneoplastic syndrome that can be associated with osteogenic osteomalacia. This tumor most commonly occurs in middle-aged men and women. We report a rare case of a phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor in a 16-year-old girl with multiple fractures as a result of severe osteoporosis. CT and MRI showed a mass arising from the tibia.

BACKGROUND: The peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF), one of the most common gingival lesions, has a recurrence rate of nearly 20%. To minimize the reappearance of this lesion, it must be completely excised. In the maxillary anterior region, total excision of a POF can result in an unsightly gingival defect.
METHODS: Three cases are presented in which a POF was excised from the gingiva facial to a maxillary central incisor. One of these lesions had previously undergone 2 cycles of conservative excision and recurrence. In all cases, the lesions were excised down to bone. Each of the resulting gi

Gallbladder cancer (GBC) is a highly malignant tumor with poorly understood etiology. An insight into phenotypic features of this malignancy may add to the knowledge of its carcinogenesis and pave the way to new therapeutic approaches. We assessed the expression of female sex hormone receptors (ERα, ERβ, PR), connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) and HER2 in GBC, and adjacent normal tissue (NT), and determined their prognostic impact. Immunohistochemical (IHC) expression of all biomarkers was performed in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded specimens in 60 Caucasian GBC patients (51 women and 9

BACKGROUND: T zone lymphoma (TZL), a histologic variant of peripheral T cell lymphoma, represents about 12% of all canine lymphomas. Golden Retrievers appear predisposed, representing over 40% of TZL cases. Prior research found that asymptomatic aged Golden Retrievers frequently have populations of T zone-like cells (phenotypically identical to TZL) of undetermined significance (TZUS), potentially representing a pre-clinical state. These findings suggest a genetic risk factor for this disease and caused us to investigate potential genes of interest using a genome-wide association study of priv

A 35-year-old man, a known asthmatic and with a history of smoking presented with a history of recurrent episodes of mild haemoptysis. On examination, there was decreased intensity of breath sounds on the right infraclavicular area. The chest X-ray and CT chest showed a mass in right upper lobe with nodules in the other lobe. The VAT showed large heavily vascularised mass with surface laden with multiple nodules. The wedge resection of the mass was taken and sent for histopathology examination. The biopsy result showed picture suggestive of connective tissue disease associated follicular bronc
