The clinical pharmacology of neuromuscular blocking agents is described. During neuromuscular blockade, succinylcholine attaches to receptor … polarizing agents interact with inhaled anesthetics, magnesium, and many antimicrobials. Drugs like neostigmine, edrophonium, and pyridostigmine antagonize neuromuscular blockade; an anticholinergic drug is typically administered to counteract the cardiovascular effects. The most serious adverse effects of succinylcholine are malignant hyperthermia syndrome, …

BeWo choriocarcinoma cells were cultured onto solid microcarrier beads, packed into syringe barrels and superfused. The unidirectional choli … holine influx was also reduced to about half in the presence of 100 microM vesamicol, bethanecol or neostigmine. It is concluded that BeWo cells possess a choline transporter similar to that described in isolated cytotrophoblasts and syncytiotrophoblast microvillous membrane preparations, and that uptake appeared to be regulated by both intracellular and extr …

Fifteen minutes later neuromuscular blockade was successfully reversed with atropine and neostigmine. The postanaesthetic course was uneventful. Because of the increased sensitivity to rocuronium and atracurium the patient was re-evaluated postoperatively. The pharmacology and history of development of nondepolarizing neuromuscular blocking agents are presented, and the pharmacokinetics and pha … agents must be reversed more rapidly, acetylcholinesterase-inhibiting agents such as physostigmine, neostigmine, pyridostigmine, and edrophonium can be used. Nondepolarizing neuromuscular blocking agents can be used to paralyze mechanically ventilated patients, facilitating optimal oxygenation and ventilation.

The effects of various blockers of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor-activated ionic channel on noncontractile slow Ca++ mobilization were investigated at the neuromuscular synapse of aequorin-injected diaphragm muscles of mice. Intracellular Ca++ mobilization (Ca++ transients) was evoked in the presence of neostigmine (0.3 microM) by nerve stimulation. Bupivacaine, an open channel blocker, decreased the peak amplitude, whereas chlorpromazine, a closed channel blocker, shortened the duration. Phencyclidine, an open and closed channel blocker, decreased both peak amplitude and duration. beta…

1. In an experimental model of haemorrhagic shock resulting in the death of all rats within 20-30 min, the intravenous (i.v.) injection of the tertiary amine cholinesterase inhibitor physostigmine (17-70 micrograms kg-1) induced a prompt, sustained and dose-dependent improvement of cardiovascular and respiratory function, with marked increase in the volume of circulating blood and survival of all treated animals, at least for the 2 h of observation. 2. Similar results were obtained with the i.v. injection of the cholinoceptor agonist oxotremorine (5-25 micrograms kg-1), while neostigmine (54 o…

Neostigmine and atropine methyl nitrate had no effect, indicating that the effects were mediated centrally. The learning effects were distinguishable from analgesia induced by drugs, since morphine increased analgesia regardless of the presence or absence of th …

Snake bite envenomation is one of the most toxicology-related cause that can mimic brain death. This is a case report of 73-year-old elderly female, a hypertensive on treatment, who presented with chief complaints of cobra snake bite on the dorsum of right hand. On admission, patient had dyspnea, bilateral ptosis and ophthalmoplegia. In the next 10-15 min, her symptoms got worsened for which she was administered intravenous doses of atropine (2 mg), neostigmine (0.5 mg) and anti-snake venom. She developed respiratory arrest, hence was intubated and was started on mechanical ventilation. On ass…

BACKGROUND: Heartburn is one of the most common gastrointestinal symptoms in pregnant women. It can occur in all trimesters of pregnancy. The symptoms of heartburn in pregnancy may be frequent, severe and distressing, but serious complications are rare. Many interventions have been used for the treatment of heartburn in pregnancy. These interventions include advice on diet, lifestyle modification and medications. However, there has been no evidence-based recommendation for the treatment of heartburn in pregnancy.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of interventions for relieving heartburn in pr

Dr. Mary Walker discovered in 1934 that physostigmine and Prostigmin temporarily restored muscle function in patients with myasthenia gravis. In the next five years, Dr. Walker and colleagues provided clinical evidence for the weakness of myasthenia gravis being caused by a "disturbance of transmission of excitation from motor nerve to voluntary muscle presumably caused by a deficiency of acetylcholine. Physostigmine (or Prostigmin) compensated for the lack of acetylcholine by delaying its destruction." Dr. Walker and colleagues also described the association between familial periodic paralysi
