Expression of nerve growth factor and vascular endothelial growth factor in the inferior alveolar nerve after distraction osteogenesis.

The objective of this study was to evaluate changes occurring in the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) subsequent to mandibular distraction oste … tly elevated on the 7th and 14th day after distraction. NGF was expressed in most of the distracted nerve tissues, but VEGF was primarily detected in Schwann cells and the neurovasorum. VEGF expression had returned to normal but NGF expression was still profoundly elevated 28 days after distraction. NGF expression returned to normal levels at 56 days after dis …

Orthopedic Surgical Management of Complicated Congenital Popliteal Pterygium Syndrome: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Popliteal pterygium syndrome (PPS) is a rare autosomal-dominant condition that causes fixed flexion deformity of the knee. The popliteal webbing and shortening of the surrounding soft tissue could limit the functionality of the affected limb unless it is surgically corrected. We reported a case of PPS in a pediatric patient encountered in our hospital. CASE: A 10-month-old boy came with a congenital abnormally flexed left knee with bilateral undescended testis and syndactyly of the left foot. The left popliteal pterygium extending from the buttock to the calcaneus was observed,

Innervation of papillary thyroid cancer and its association with extra-thyroidal invasion.

Nerves are emerging regulators of cancer progression and in several malignancies innervation of the tumour microenvironment is associated with tumour aggressiveness. However, the innervation of thyroid cancer is unclear. Here, we investigated the presence of nerves in thyroid cancers and the potential associations with clinicopathological parameters. Nerves were detected by immunohistochemistry using the pan-neuronal marker PGP9.5 in whole-slide sections of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) (n = 75), compared to follicular thyroid cancer (FTC) (n = 13), and benign thyroid tissues (n = 26). Nerves

Post anti-rabies vaccine encephalitis presenting as acute psychosis: Case reports.

Rabies, an invariably fatal zoonotic disease, remains a major public health concern in resource-limited settings, where access to cell culture-derived vaccines constrained hampers comprehensive immunization programs and compromises effective disease control and prevention efforts. As a result, several countries, including Ethiopia, continue to utilize nerve tissue-derived vaccines (NTVs)-notably phenolized sheep brain formulations-despite their well-documented neurotoxicity and the global recommendation to transition to safer, cell culture-based alternatives. This report describes two clinical…

Polarization properties of retinal blood vessel walls measured with polarization sensitive optical coherence tomography.

A new method based on polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) is introduced to determine the polarization properties of human retinal vessel walls, in vivo. Measurements were obtained near the optic nerve head of three healthy human subjects. The double pass phase retardation per unit depth (DPPR/UD), which is proportional to the birefringence, is higher in artery walls, presumably because of the presence of muscle tissue. Measurements in surrounding retinal nerve fiber layer tissue yielded lower DPPR/UD values, suggesting that the retinal vessel wall tissue near the optic

Vascular and nerval damage after intraoperative radiation therapy of the liver hilum in a large animal model.

It has been demonstrated that intraoperative radiotherapy is a therapeutic option for patients suffering from perihilar cholangiocarcinoma. Aim of our study was to investigate vascular and nerve damages after irradiation of the liver hilum in a pig model. Twenty-four pigs underwent central bile duct resection followed by biliodigestive anastomosis. Nine pigs underwent this surgical procedure alone (group 1). Ten pigs were treated with additional intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) of 20Gy to the liver hilum (group 2). And five pigs received operation and IORT with 40Gy to the area of anast

Salivary gland choristoma in the middle ear: a case report.

Salivary gland choristoma (ectopic or heterotopic salivary gland tissue) is a rare condition that occurs in various locations within the head and neck regions. We present a 13-year-old boy with a salivary gland choristoma in the middle ear associated with congenital alopecia around the auricle in addition to facial nerve and ossicular chain abnormalities. Because the lesions commonly involve the facial nerve, intraoperative facial nerve monitoring is helpful in allowing safe biopsy without facial nerve damage.

Biophysical simulation enables segmentation and nervous system atlas mapping for image first spatial omics.

Spatial omics (SO) produces high-definition mapping of subcellular molecules within tissue samples. Mapping transcripts to anatomical regions requires segmentation, but this remains challenging in tissue cross-sections with tubular structures like axons in peripheral nerve or spinal cord. Neural networks could address misidentification but are hindered by the need for extensive human annotations. We present SiDoLa-NS (Simulate, Don't Label-Nervous System), an image-driven (top-down) approach to SO analysis in the nervous system. We utilize biophysical properties of tissue architectures to desi

Effect of combination of nerve fragments with nerve growth factor in autologous epineurium small gap coaptation on peripheral nerve injury repair.

The aim of this study was to explore the effect of the combination of nerve fragments with nerve growth factor (NGF) on the repair of peripheral nerve injury through autologous epineurium small gap coaptation. A total of 150 male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 200-250 g were divided into five groups randomly with 30 rats per group, including the following: a control group that was subjected to traditional end-to-end neuroanastomosis; an autologous epineurium small gap group that received autologous epineurium small gap coaptation suture; a nerve fragments group in which nerve fragments were adde

Early overfeed-induced obesity leads to brown adipose tissue hypoactivity in rats.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Brown adipose tissue activation has been considered a potential anti-obesity mechanism because it is able to expend energy through thermogenesis. In contrast, white adipose tissue stores energy, contributing to obesity. We investigated whether the early programming of obesity by overfeeding during lactation changes structure of interscapular brown adipose tissue in adulthood and its effects on thermogenesis. METHODS: Birth of litters was considered day 0. On day 2, litter size was adjusted to normal (9 pups) and small (3 pups) litters. On day 21, the litters were weaned. A te

Non-thermal plasma accelerates the healing process of peripheral nerve crush injury in rats.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of non-thermal plasma (NTP) on the healing process of peripheral nerve crush injuries, which can occur during dental implant procedures. For this, a rat model of sciatic nerve crush injury (SNCI) was adopted. The rats were divided into three groups: non-nerve damage (non-ND), nerve damage (ND), and ND+NTP group. To evaluate the sciatic nerve (SN) function, the static sciatic index was calculated, and the muscle and SN tissues were subjected to a histologic analysis. The results showed that NTP effectively accelerated the healing process of

Nerve Growth Factor Facilitates the Innervation of Perivascular Nerves in Tumor-Derived Neovasculature in the Mouse Cornea.

BACKGROUND: Tumor neovascular vessels are not innervated by perivascular nerves. This study was an investigation of the effects of the nerve growth factor (NGF) on the distribution of perivascular nerves and neovessel formation in tumor tissues. METHODS: A gel containing DU145 prostate carcinoma cells or HT1080 fibrosarcoma cells was implanted into mouse corneas. NGF was subcutaneously administered using an osmotic mini-pump. The distribution of perivascular nerves in mouse corneas and densities of CD31-immunopositive neovessels and smooth muscles (α-smooth muscle actin, α-SMA) in tumor tissu

The temporal branch of the facial nerve: how reliably can we predict its path?

A thorough examination of the temporal branch of the facial nerve was performed to characterize precisely the number of rami crossing the zygomatic arch and their location with respect to bone and soft-tissue landmarks. Fresh cadaver dissection was performed in 12 facial halves, dissecting the facial nerve superiorly from the stylomastoid foramen to identify all branches crossing the zygomatic arch. There were a median of three (range two to four) rami of the temporal branch crossing the lower aspect of the zygomatic arch, with distinct anterior and posterior divisions identified in each disse

Effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on nerve regeneration in early diabetes.

Nerve regeneration in diabetes is essential for reversal of neuropathy as well as the recovery of nerves from injury due to acute nerve compression and entrapment. Endoneural hypoxia due to hyperglycemia-induced blood flow reductions is observed early in the course of diabetes, and the resultant ischemia plays a role in the diminished neural regeneration. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is capable of producing tissue hyperoxia by raising oxygen tensions in ischemic tissues, and was shown to be beneficial in the reversal of experimental ischemic neuropathy. In this study, an experimental diabetes mod

Fresh human amniotic membrane effectively promotes the repair of injured common peroneal nerve.

Suture and autologous nerve transplantation are the primary therapeutic measures for completely severed nerves. However, imbalances in the microenvironment and adhesion of surrounding tissues can affect the quality of nerve regeneration and repair. Previous studies have shown that human amniotic membrane can promote the healing of a variety of tissues. In this study, the right common peroneal nerve underwent a 5-mm transection in rats. Epineural nerve repair was performed using 10/0 non-absorbable surgical suture. The repair site was wrapped with a two-layer amniotic membrane with α-cyanoacryl

Lipofibromatous hamartoma of sciatic nerve: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Lipofibromatous hamartoma of the nerve is the fibro-fatty overgrowth within the nerve. Most commonly they occur in the median nerve, ulnar nerves, and a few other nerves but the involvement of the sciatic nerve is very rare. The fibro-fatty infiltration causes palpable neurogenic mass and clinically presents lump, moderate numbness, tingling sensation, and pain in its territory. Magnetic resonance imaging is the gold standard for diagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 65 years old female, who presented to OPD with a tingling sensation which progressed to pain in th

Axonal regeneration across long gaps in silicone chambers filled with Schwann cells overexpressing high molecular weight FGF-2.

Basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2) has been shown to enhance the survival and neurite extension of various types of neurons including spinal ganglion neurons. In addition, endogenous FGF-2 and FGF receptors are upregulated following peripheral nerve lesion in ganglia and at the lesion site. FGF-2 protein is expressed in different isoforms (18 kDa, 21 kDa, 23 kDa) and differentially regulated after nerve injury. In the rat we analyzed the regenerative capacity of the high molecular weight (HMW) FGF-2 isoforms (21/23 kDa) to support the regeneration of the axotomized adult sciatic nerve acro
