Toward intraoperative tissue classification: exploiting signal feedback from an ultrasonic aspirator for brain tissue differentiation.

PURPOSE: During brain tumor surgery, care must be taken to accurately differentiate between tumorous and healthy tissue, as inadvertent resection of functional brain areas can cause severe consequences. Since visual assessment can be difficult during tissue resection, neurosurgeons have to rely on the mechanical perception of tissue, which in itself is inherently challenging. A commonly used instrument for tumor resection is the ultrasonic aspirator, whose system behavior is already dependent on tissue properties. Using data recorded during tissue fragmentation, machine learning-based tissue d

Improving Misfire Fault Diagnosis with Cascading Architectures via Acoustic Vehicle Characterization.

In a world dependent on road-based transportation, it is essential to understand automobiles. We propose an acoustic road vehicle characterization system as an integrated approach for using sound captured by mobile devices to enhance transparency and understanding of vehicles and their condition for non-expert users. We develop and implement novel deep learning cascading architectures, which we define as conditional, multi-level networks that process raw audio to extract highly granular insights for vehicle understanding. To showcase the viability of cascading architectures, we build a multi-t

Predicting human decision making in psychological tasks with recurrent neural networks.

Unlike traditional time series, the action sequences of human decision making usually involve many cognitive processes such as beliefs, desires, intentions, and theory of mind, i.e., what others are thinking. This makes predicting human decision-making challenging to be treated agnostically to the underlying psychological mechanisms. We propose here to use a recurrent neural network architecture based on long short-term memory networks (LSTM) to predict the time series of the actions taken by human subjects engaged in gaming activity, the first application of such methods in this research doma

Convolutional Neural Networks for Mechanistic Driver Detection in Atrial Fibrillation.

The maintaining and initiating mechanisms of atrial fibrillation (AF) remain controversial. Deep learning is emerging as a powerful tool to better understand AF and improve its treatment, which remains suboptimal. This paper aims to provide a solution to automatically identify rotational activity drivers in endocardial electrograms (EGMs) with convolutional recurrent neural networks (CRNNs). The CRNN model was compared with two other state-of-the-art methods (SimpleCNN and attention-based time-incremental convolutional neural network (ATI-CNN)) for different input signals (unipolar EGMs, bipol

DARC: Deep adaptive regularized clustering for histopathological image classification.

In recent years, deep learning as a state-of-the-art machine learning technique has made great success in histopathological image classification. However, most of deep learning approaches rely heavily on the substantial task-specific annotations, which require experienced pathologists' manual labelling. As a result, they are laborious and time-consuming, and many unlabeled pathological images are difficult to use without experts' annotations. To mitigate the requirement for data annotation, we propose a self-supervised Deep Adaptive Regularized Clustering (DARC) framework to pre-train a neural

Deep neural networks for simultaneous BTEX sensing at high temperatures.

In the study of chemical reactions, it is desirable to have a diagnostic strategy that can detect multiple species simultaneously with high sensitivity, selectivity, and fast time response. Laser-based selective detection of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) has been challenging due to the similarly broad absorbance spectra of these species. Here, a mid-infrared laser sensor is presented for selective and simultaneous BTEX detection in high-temperature shock tube experiments using deep neural networks (DNN). A shock tube was coupled with a non-intrusive mid-infrared laser sour

EMD-based data augmentation method applied to handwriting data for the diagnosis of Essential Tremor using LSTM networks.

The increasing capacity of today's technology represents great advances in diagnosing diseases using standard procedures supported by computer science. Deep learning techniques are able to extract the characteristics of temporal signals to study their patterns and diagnose diseases such as essential tremor. However, these techniques require a large amount of data to train the neural network and achieve good results, and the more data the network has, the more accurate the final model implemented. In this work we propose the use of a data augmentation technique to improve the accuracy of a Long

Unsupervised landmark detection and classification of lung infection using transporter neural networks.

Supervised deep learning techniques have been very popular in medical imaging for various tasks of classification, segmentation, and object detection. However, they require a large number of labelled data which is expensive and requires many hours of careful annotation by experts. In this paper, an unsupervised transporter neural network framework with an attention mechanism is proposed to automatically identify relevant landmarks with applications in lung ultrasound (LUS) imaging. The proposed framework identifies key points that provide a concise geometric representation highlighting regions

Classification of Multiclass Histopathological Breast Images Using Residual Deep Learning.

Pathologists need a lot of clinical experience and time to do the histopathological investigation. AI may play a significant role in supporting pathologists and resulting in more accurate and efficient histopathological diagnoses. Breast cancer is one of the most diagnosed cancers in women worldwide. Breast cancer may be detected and diagnosed using imaging methods such as histopathological images. Since various tissues make up the breast, there is a wide range of textural intensity, making abnormality detection difficult. As a result, there is an urgent need to improve computer-assisted syste

A meta-learning approach to improving radiation response prediction in cancers.

PURPOSE: Predicting the efficacy of radiotherapy in individual patients has drawn widespread attention, but the limited sample size remains a bottleneck for utilizing high-dimensional multi-omics data to guide personalized radiotherapy. We hypothesize the recently developed meta-learning framework could address this limitation. METHODS AND MATERIALS: By combining gene expression, DNA methylation, and clinical data of 806 patients who had received radiotherapy from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), we applied the Model-Agnostic Meta-Learning (MAML) framework to tasks consisting of pan-cancer dat

Epilepsy as a disease affecting neural networks: a neurophysiological perspective.

INTRODUCTION: The brain is a series of networks of functionally and anatomically connected, bilaterally represented structures; in epilepsy, activity of any part of the brain affects activity in the other parts. This is relevant for understanding the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and prognosis of the disease. OBJECTIVES: In this study, we present a state-of-the-art review of the neurophysiological view of epilepsy as a disease affecting neural networks. RESULTS: We describe the basic and advanced principles of epilepsy as a disease affecting neural networks, based on the use of different clini

Lesion detection of chest X-Ray based on scalable attention residual CNN.

Most of the research on disease recognition in chest X-rays is limited to segmentation and classification, but the problem of inaccurate recognition in edges and small parts makes doctors spend more time making judgments. In this paper, we propose a lesion detection method based on a scalable attention residual CNN (SAR-CNN), which uses target detection to identify and locate diseases in chest X-rays and greatly improves work efficiency. We designed a multi-convolution feature fusion block (MFFB), tree-structured aggregation module (TSAM), and scalable channel and spatial attention (SCSA), whi

Multi-Scale Aggregated-Dilation Network for ex-vivo Lung Cancer Detection with Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Endomicroscopy.

Multi-scale architectures at a granular level are characterised by separating input features into groups and applying multi-scale feature extractions to the split input features, and thus the correlations among the input features as global information are no longer retained. Moreover, they usually require more input features due to the separation, and therefore, more complexity is introduced. To retain the global information while utilising the advantages of feature-level hierarchical multi-scale architectures, we propose a multi-scale aggregated-dilation architecture (MSAD) to perform hierarc

Machine learning techniques demonstrating individual movement patterns of the vertebral column: the fingerprint of spinal motion.

Surface topography systems enable the capture of spinal dynamic movement; however, it is unclear whether vertebral dynamics are unique enough to identify individuals. Therefore, in this study, we investigated whether the identification of individuals is possible based on dynamic spinal data. Three different data representations were compared (automated extracted features using contrastive loss and triplet loss functions, as well as simple descriptive statistics). High accuracies indicated the possible existence of a personal spinal 'fingerprint', therefore enabling subject recognition. The pre

Using convolutional neural networks to decode EEG-based functional brain network with different severity of acrophobia.

Objective. The prevalence of acrophobia is high, especially with the rise of many high-rise buildings. In the recent few years, researchers have begun to analyze acrophobia from the neuroscience perspective, especially to improve the virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET). Electroencephalographic (EEG) is an informative neuroimaging technique, but it is rarely used for acrophobia. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of using EEGs to identify the degree of acrophobia objectively.Approach.EEG data were collected by virtual reality (VR) exposure experiments. We classified a

Abnormal Activity Recognition from Surveillance Videos Using Convolutional Neural Network.

UNLABELLED: Background and motivation: Every year, millions of Muslims worldwide come to Mecca to perform the Hajj. In order to maintain the security of the pilgrims, the Saudi government has installed about 5000 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras to monitor crowd activity efficiently. PROBLEM: As a result, these cameras generate an enormous amount of visual data through manual or offline monitoring, requiring numerous human resources for efficient tracking. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop an intelligent and automatic system in order to efficiently monitor crowds and ident

Feasibility of a Neural Network-Based Virtual Sensor for Vehicle Unsprung Mass Relative Velocity Estimation.

With the automotive industry moving towards automated driving, sensing is increasingly important in enabling technology. The virtual sensors allow data fusion from various vehicle sensors and provide a prediction for measurement that is hard or too expensive to measure in another way or in the case of demand on continuous detection. In this paper, virtual sensing is discussed for the case of vehicle suspension control, where information about the relative velocity of the unsprung mass for each vehicle corner is required. The corresponding goal can be identified as a regression task with multi-

Epistemic uncertainty quantification in deep learning classification by the Delta method.

The Delta method is a classical procedure for quantifying epistemic uncertainty in statistical models, but its direct application to deep neural networks is prevented by the large number of parameters P. We propose a low cost approximation of the Delta method applicable to L2-regularized deep neural networks based on the top K eigenpairs of the Fisher information matrix. We address efficient computation of full-rank approximate eigendecompositions in terms of the exact inverse Hessian, the inverse outer-products of gradients approximation and the so-called Sandwich estimator. Moreover, we prov
