Nutritional status of children of urban leprosy patients staying at preventoria based on biochemical parameters.

Measurements of nutritionally relevant biochemical and endocrine variables were made on 60 apparently healthy children (group A) whose parents suffered from leprosy and who had been separated at the age of 4 years and brought up in preventoria. Most of the measurements were also made on a comparison group of healthy children from the same poor socio-economic class (group B). In both groups the serum concentrations of cholesterol and triglycerides were well below those found in Western populations. Almost all the children in both groups were anaemic, but serum iron and ferritin levels were sati

Central and peripheral neuropeptide RFRP-3: A bridge linking reproduction, nutrition, and stress response.

This article is an amalgamation of the current status of RFRP-3 (GnIH) in reproduction and its association with the nutrition and stress-mediated changes in the reproductive activities. GnIH has been demonstrated in the hypothalamus of all the vertebrates studied so far and is a well-known inhibitor of GnRH mediated reproduction. The RFRP-3 neurons interact with the other hypothalamic neurons and the hormonal signals from peripheral organs for coordinating the nutritional, stress, and environmental associated changes to regulate reproduction. RFRP-3 has also been shown to regulate puberty, rep

Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake and Selective Eating in Children: Clinical Profile, Nutritional Deficiencies, and Behavioral Correlates in a Tertiary Pediatric Center.

Background: Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) and selective eating are increasingly recognized in pediatric nutrition, but food selectivity has been predominantly studied in dedicated eating disorder settings and in underweight children, potentially underestimating its prevalence across broader clinical populations. This study aimed to characterize food selectivity as a transdiagnostic feature in children referred to a tertiary pediatric nutrition center, regardless of referral diagnosis or BMI status. Methods: This retrospective observational study included 417 consecutive chi

Iodine deficiency disorders in India.

Iodine deficiency disorders were widely prevalent in Indian subcontinent before the successful salt iodisation. There has been a remarkable decline in goitre prevalence and improvement of functional thyroid status and normalisation of iodine nutrition status in the community. Goitre endemicity of varying degree persists among school children even a decade after successful salt iodisation in India. Some other factors like high thiocyanate exposure or auto-immune thyroid disease could be responsible for such a phenomenon.

Mutations in a Sar1 GTPase of COPII vesicles are associated with lipid absorption disorders.

Dietary fat is an important source of nutrition. Here we identify eight mutations in SARA2 that are associated with three severe disorders of fat malabsorption. The Sar1 family of proteins initiates the intracellular transport of proteins in COPII (coat protein)-coated vesicles. Our data suggest that chylomicrons, which vastly exceed the size of typical COPII vesicles, are selectively recruited by the COPII machinery for transport through the secretory pathways of the cell.

[Hypovitaminosis D, the osteomalacia syndrome and calcium homeokinesis in childhood].

The author pays attention to hypovitaminosis D in childhood. Despite efforts to eliminate it, its estimated incidence in the first and second year of life is 5-20%. This relatively high incidence in our population as well as in other countries makes hypovitaminosis D one of the most frequent disorders of the child organism. In addition to nutrition-conditioned rickets more than 50 different diseases have been described with rachitic and osteomalatic manifestations.

Iron-enriched rice: the case for labeling.

ABSTRACT Genetically modified rice that incorporates twofold to threefold increased amounts of iron is being developed. The product could provide improved nutrition to iron-deficient persons but may be a health hazard to large numbers of humans who are prone to iron overload. Clinical disorders such as African siderosis, beta-thalassemia, hemochromatosis, and alcoholic siderosis are of special concern. Conditions associated with iron loading include fatigue and depression; arthritis; endocrine disorders such as stunted growth, impotence, and diabetes; gastrointestinal maladies; infections and

Thyrotoxicosis associated Wernicke's encephalopathy.

BACKGROUND: Wernicke's encephalopathy is a rare disorder resulting from nutrition deficiency in thiamine (vitamin B1). It is most often associated with chronic alcohol abuse. It can accompany other disorders such as hyperemesis gravidarum and hyperthyroidism. CASE: We present a case of severe Wernicke's encephalopathy that developed in a male non-alcoholic inpatient that was precipitated by poor nutritional intake and development of thyrotoxicosis. It is likely that the hypermetabolic state from thyrotoxicosis contributed to the development of Wernicke's encephalopathy, which was extremely de

Nutrient intake, dietary patterns and relationship to symptoms and comorbidities in hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) patients have a high prevalence of Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction (DGBI) and can pose complex nutritional challenges, yet little is known about their dietary intake, adequacy or dietary patterns and how this relates to clinical presentation. We aimed to assess this. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, patients with hEDS completed a food frequency questionnaire and questionnaires characterizing: DGBI, gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), and use of nutrition support. Nutritional management can assist a significant role in alleviation of arsenicosis.

Consumption of arsenic contaminated water causes serious skin disease and cancer in a significant number of exposed people. Chelating agents, consider an expensive therapy, are employed in the treatment of arsenic intoxication. There are reports which suggest that the poorest suffer the most from arsenicosis. This may be due to improper diet intake, consist of low protein and micronutrients which increase the vulnerability to arsenic-related disorders. Several human studies demonstrated the associations between malnourishment and the development of arsenic-caused skin lesions, skin cancer and

Management of glucose abnormalities in patients receiving total parenteral nutrition.

A patient who developed extreme fluctuations in serum glucose concentrations while receiving total parenteral nutrition (TPN) is described, and etiologies of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia, as well as a rational approach to preventing and managing these disorders in patients receiving TPN, are presented. A 40-year-old white man with a 29-year history of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus was hospitalized after he had an episode of rejection related to a cadaveric kidney transplant. During the hospitalization, his right leg was amputated because of cellulitis, and he developed septicemia with

Growth, nutritional, and gastrointestinal aspects of focal dermal hypoplasia (Goltz-Gorlin syndrome).

Focal dermal hypoplasia (FDH) is a rare genetic disorder caused by mutations in the PORCN gene located on the X-chromosome. In the present study, we characterized the pattern of growth, body composition, and the nutritional and gastrointestinal aspects of children and adults (n = 19) affected with this disorder using clinical anthropometry and a survey questionnaire. The mean birth length (P < 0.06) and weight (P < 0.001) z-scores of the participants were lower than the reference population. The mean head circumference (P < 0.001), height (length) (P < 0.001), weight (P < 0.01), and BMI (P < 0

Global Implementation of the Nutrition-Friendly School Initiative (NFSI): A Scoping Review of Strategies, Challenges, Barriers, and Facilitators.

BACKGROUND: The Nutrition-Friendly School Initiative (NFSI) is a whole-school approach designed to address the triple burden of malnutrition among school-aged children. However, evidence on its implementation across diverse settings remains fragmented. METHODS: This scoping review followed Arksey and O'Malley's framework and searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, and gray literature sources for studies explicitly implementing the NFSI framework. FINDINGS: Sixteen records were included. Evidence suggests that NFSI implementation improves nutrition knowledge, dietary behaviors, and s

Refeeding syndrome: an important aspect of supportive oncology.

Refeeding syndrome (RFS) is an underappreciated, yet common and potentially dangerous, constellation of metabolic derangements that can occur upon reinstitution of any type of nutritional intervention. The typical patient who experiences RFS has been malnourished for days to weeks and develops hypophosphatemia and, occasionally, hypokalemia and hypomagnesemia when administered a carbohydrate load in the form of glucose-containing fluids, total parenteral nutrition (TPN), tube feedings, or an oral diet. The pathophysiology of RFS is complex but mainly results from an acute intracellular shift i

Control of micronutrient deficiencies in India: obstacles and strategies.

Micronutrient deficiencies of vitamin A, iron, and iodine continue to be of public health significance in India. The government of India initiated national programs to prevent, control and combat these deficiencies and their serious consequences. The interventions involved (1) distribution of iodized salt in the endemic areas, (2) administration of semiannual massive dose of vitamin A to young children, and (3) distribution of iron-folic acid tablets to the vulnerable groups. Evaluations revealed that the biologic impact of these interventions was unsatisfactory. Inadequate allocation of funds

[Nutrition in chronic obstructive bronchopneumopathy].

The respiratory system and nutrition are linked. Obesity is sometimes seen in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but its prevalence, the morbidity and mortality induced by it are not known. In addition, the prevalence of malnutrition is high in COPD and the more severe the COPD is, the higher percentage of malnutrition is present. Emphysematous patients are more frequently undernourished than those suffering from chronic bronchitis. Malnutrition is the consequence of the hypermetabolism induced by the higher cost of breathing in emphysema. The survival rate of these patients is nega

Nutritional management of infants and toddlers with chronic renal failure.

Normal renal function is an essential prerequisite for normal nutrition. Renal failure results in malnutrition and growth retardation, which are particularly marked when renal failure has its onset early in life. Conversely, the careful application of nutritional therapy can ameliorate the effects of renal failure and allow improved well being and growth and possibly retard the rate of progression of renal failure. Nutritional therapy includes the provision of an adequate energy intake, appropriate intakes of water, electrolytes, vitamins and minerals and regulation of protein and phosphorus i
