Trigeminal ganglion and sensory nerves suggest tactile specialization of elephants.

Sensory nerves are information bottlenecks giving rise to distinct sensory worlds across animal species.1 Here, we investigate trigeminal ganglion2,3 and sensory nerves4 of elephants. The elephant trigeminal ganglion is very large. Its maxillary branch, which gives rise to the infraorbital nerve innervating the trunk, has a larger diameter than the animal's spinal cord, i.e., trunk innervation is more substantive than connections of the brain to the rest of the body. Hundreds of satellite cells surround each trigeminal neuron, an indication of exceptional glial support to these large projectio

Tactile stimulation partially prevents neurodevelopmental changes in visual tract caused by early iron deficiency.

Iron deficiency has a critical impact on maturational mechanisms of the brain and the damage related to neuroanatomical parameters is not satisfactorily reversed after iron replacement. However, emerging evidence suggest that enriched early experience may offer great therapeutic efficacy in cases of nutritional disorders postnatally, since the brain is remarkably responsive to its interaction with the environment. Given the fact that tactile stimulation (TS) treatment has been previously shown to be an effective therapeutic approach and with potential application to humans, here we ask whether

Physiological Correlates and Predictors of Functional Recovery After Chiasmal Decompression.

BACKGROUND: The intrinsic abilities and limits of the nervous system to repair itself after damage may be assessed using a model of optic chiasmal compression, before and after a corrective surgical procedure. METHODS: Visual fields (VFs), multifocal visual evoked potentials (mfVEP), retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, and diffusion tensor imaging were used to evaluate a patient before and after removal of a meningioma compressing the chiasm. Normally sighted individuals served as controls. The advantage of each modality to document visual function and predict postoperative outcome (2

Architecture of the optic chiasm and the mechanisms that sculpt its development.

At the optic chiasm the two optic nerves fuse, and fibers from each eye cross the midline or turn back and remain uncrossed. Having adopted their pathways the fibers separate to form the two optic tracts. Research into the architecture and development of the chiasm has become an area of increasing interest. Many of its mature features are complex and vary between different animal types. It is probable that numerous factors sculpt its development. The separate ganglion cell classes cross the midline at different locations along the length of the chiasm, reflecting their distinct periods of prod

Angular momentum properties of a circularly polarized vortex beam in the paraxial optical systems.

The angular momentum (AM) properties of circularly polarized vortex beams (CPVBs) in two paraxial optical systems [free space and a gradient-index (GRIN) fiber] are demonstrated. The transverse light intensity, the longitudinal light intensity, the phase of the longitudinal electric field, the kinetic momentum, the total spin AM (SAM), the transverse-type SAM (t-SAM), the longitudinal-type SAM (l-SAM), and the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of CPVBs in the two paraxial optical systems are characterized. Spin-orbit coupling of CPVBs is studied during propagation in free space and in a GRIN fibe

Decoupling Through-Tip Illumination from Scanning in Nanoscale Photo-SECM.

The use of scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) for nanoscale imaging of photoelectrochemical processes at semiconductor surfaces has recently been demonstrated. To illuminate a microscopic portion of the substrate surface facing the SECM probe, a glass-sealed, polished tip simultaneously served as a nanoelectrode and a light guide. One issue affecting nanoscale photo-SECM experiments is mechanical interactions of the rigid optical fiber with the tip motion controlled by the piezo-positioner. Here we report an improved experimental setup in which the tip is mechanically decoupled from th

Dense laser at the papillomacular bundle does not cause loss of visual function.

INTRODUCTION: Juxtapapillary laser (JPL) photocoagulation in the region of the papillomacular bundle, temporal to the optic nerve, has become routine care in disorders such as optic disc pit maculopathy. Despite evidence demonstrating safe and effective use of this approach, there is still a lack of consensus in the literature, due to the perceived risk of loss of visual function. Instances of such misplaced caution could result in inadequate treatment protocols. METHODS: An observational series of five cases of optic disc pit maculopathy, treated with dense temporal juxtapapillary endolaser,

Ultrastructural and crystallographic study of calcifications from a patient with CREST syndrome.

An ultrastructural and crystallographic study was done on calcium deposits obtained from a patient with the CREST syndrome. Optical microscopy showed that large calcific cutaneous deposits seemed to have developed in a dense connective tissue without any inflammatory reaction. The oldest lesions contained heterotopic bone. Electron microscopy showed that calcium deposit, in the slightly mineralized fibers, was located at the center of the elastic fibers. The calcifications were surgically removed and studies were performed on the rough products and, after heating, using x-ray crystallography,

Diagnostic Approach to Traumatic Axonal Injury of the Optic Radiation in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

We describe a diffusion tensor tractography-based diagnostic approach to traumatic axonal injury of the optic radiation in a patient who showed visual field defect after mild traumatic brain injury. A 43-yr-old female patient experienced head trauma during a motor vehicle accident. After the head trauma, she noticed visual disturbance. Peripheral field defects were detected in both eyes on the Humphrey visual field test. After diffusion tensor tractography-based reconstruction of the optic radiation, We determined the fractional anisotropy and fiber number of each whole optic radiation. Four r

Hollow-core PCF for terahertz sensing: A new approach for ethanol and benzene detection.

Terahertz (THz) spectroscopy is becoming a powerful technique for non-destructive, label-free chemical sensing with applications ranging from medicinal research to security screening. Enhancing THz spectroscopy's sensitivity and selectivity is crucial to maximizing its potential. In this work, we offer a novel optical fiber design, square shape core PCF that is tailored to exploit improved optical features at exterior in the THz region. This analysis suggests that a square shape and three layers with square air apertures for the cladding and core would be ideal. The mathematical analysis is ca

Flexible cystoscopy.

Flexible fiberoptic technology was first applied to cystoscopy in 1973, with greatly increased usage since 1982. Most procedures formerly performed with rigid cystoscopes can be done using flexible cystoscopes with minimal or no anesthesia. Patient positioning and precystocopy preparation and draping are simplified with the flexible fiberoptic instruments. Complete examination of the urethra and bladder can be performed with a single-lens system and with the patient in a variety of positions. Fiberoptic cystoscopy is limited in patients who are bleeding or have blood clots in their bladders. W

Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography detects optic atrophy due to optic tract syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Unilateral injury of the optic tract leads to asymmetrical optic atrophy in both eyes derived from the crossing of the nerve fibers at the chiasm. This report demonstrates unique imaging appearances of optic atrophy due to this uncommon condition detected by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). METHODS: Cirrus and RTVue measurements were performed in four cases of optic tract syndrome. Circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (cpRNFL) thickness was obtained from both instruments and ganglion cell complex (GCC) integrity was obtained from RTVue. The presumable re

Correlations between the morpho-functional organization of some parts of visual analyzer and ecology in Chelonia: II. Morpho-functional characteristics of the visual nerve and tectum after unilateral enucleation.

The morpho-functional characteristics of the optic nerve and tectum opticum were studied electronmicroscopically and electrophysiologically after unilateral enucleation in 4 Chelonia species. Different types of degeneration of the myelinated and unmyelinated optic fibers and their endings in the tectum are revealed. Comparison of the types and times of the degeneration of retinal axons and their terminals with changes of the tectum evoked potentials at different times after enucleation gives ground to conclude that myelinated fibers produce nerve endings degenerating on the dark pattern and un

Imaging the optic nerve with optical coherence tomography.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging technology, which may be used to generate in vivo quantitative and qualitative measures of retinal structure. In terms of quantitative metrics, peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) thickness provides an indirect evaluation of axonal integrity within the optic nerve. Ganglion layer measures derived from macular scans indirectly reflect retinal ganglion cell status. Notably, ganglion layer indices are platform dependent and may include macular ganglion cell inner plexiform layer (mGCIPL), ganglion cell layer (GCL), and gangl

Limitations of the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph.

Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy where damages that occur at the optic nerve head and the retinal never fiber layer are associated with changes in the visual field. The Heidelberg Retina Tomograph (Heidelberg Engineering, Carlsbad, CA), a scanning laser ophthalmoscope, performs a three-dimensional topographic analysis of the optic nerve head and the retinal never fiber layer. The Heidelberg Retina Tomograph has been reported to be a reliable and objective method of identifying structural changes prior to the occurrence of visual field defects. In our series of patients, all had signi

Bilateral optic neuritis in acute hepatitis C.

A 34-year-old woman developed bilateral optic neuritis 2 weeks after the onset of acute hepatitis C. The strong temporal relationship between the initial clinical manifestations of hepatitis C and the development of optic neuritis provides a basis for thinking that the hepatitis caused the optic neuritis After corticosteroid treatment, the optic neuropathy markedly improved but left behind retinal nerve fiber thinning, as measured by optical coherence tomography, and optic disc pallor. Optic neuritis has been reported in conjunction with hepatitis A and B but not with hepatitis C.

Prevention of postoperative visual field defect after the occipital transtentorial approach: anatomical study.

OBJECTIVE A postoperative visual field defect resulting from damage to the occipital lobe during surgery is a unique complication of the occipital transtentorial approach. Though the association between patient position and this complication is well investigated, preventing the complication remains a challenge. To define the area of the occipital lobe in which retraction is least harmful, the surface anatomy of the brain, course of the optic radiations, and microsurgical anatomy of the occipital transtentorial approach were examined. METHODS Twelve formalin-fixed cadaveric adult heads were exa

Development of an Optical Detector of Thrombus Formation on the Pivot Bearing of a Rotary Blood Pump.

Continuous optical monitoring of thrombus formation in extracorporeal mechanical circulatory support (EMCS) devices will contribute to safe, long-term EMCS. A clinically applicable optical detector must be able to distinguish among the optical characteristics of oxygen saturation (SaO2 ), hematocrit (Hct), and thrombus formation. In vitro studies of spectral changes at wavelengths from 400 to 900 nm associated with SaO2 , Hct, and thrombus formed around the top pivot bearing of a Gyro C1E3 pump were conducted. Fresh porcine blood anticoagulated with sodium citrate was circulated in a mock circ
