Subperiosteal abscesses of the orbit due to sinusitis in childhood.

This paper reports 16 cases of subperiosteal abscesses of the orbit due to acute sinusitis in childhood. They comprise 12.4% of 129 patients presenting with an 'acute orbit'. Acute ethmoidal sinusitis was the predominant cause. The typical clinical features, as well as CT scanning of the paranasal sinuses, orbit and brain, should assist in early diagnosis. If possible, the subperiosteal abscess and sinuses should be drained before loss of visual acuity or intracranial complications occur. Streptococcus milleri was the pathogen most commonly cultured. One patient in this series had intracranial…

[A case of tuberculoma of the orbit with sphenoidal origin].

We report the case of an orbital and sphenoidal tuberculosis observed in a young Indian man living in France. The orbital disease is presenting as an orbital mass with a radiologic bony lytic aspect, without systemic manifestation. A malignant process was suspected. The diagnosis was obtained by the culture for Mycobacterium tuberculosis of the biopsy specimen. Orbital involvement in tuberculosis is a rare manifestation in developed countries. Most cases reported in the literature were reported from Asia and Africa. Orbital tuberculosis may become established in one of two ways: primarily by h…

Involvement of the orbit in diseases of the paranasal sinuses.

A brief description of the anatomical relationship between the orbit and the paranasal sinus system is given. Sinus infections, celes, and tumors which can lead to orbital complications are described.

Posterior penetrating injury of the orbit with retained foreign body.

A case of a retained orbital foreign body following a penetrating injury in a 2-year-old boy is described. Diagnosis and management of such cases is discussed.

[Successful therapy of secondary melanoma of the orbit with DTIC].

The authors report on cytostatic treatment of a secondary malignant melanoma of the left orbit in a 68-year-old patient. It was an inoperable tumor, extending parabulbarly and retrobulbarly, with erosion of the bone of the orbital roof and deep infiltration into the frontal sinus. The regression of the tumor following intravenous administration of Dacarbacine (6 series of 5 X 200 mg DTIC) is shown on computerized tomograms. A year after completion of chemotherapy there had been no recurrence; the patient then died suddenly from the sequelae of an apoplexy.

MR imaging of a carcinoid tumor metastatic to the orbit.

This is a report of the magnetic resonance study in a case of orbital metastasis from a carcinoid tumor. A rather unusual feature of this lesion was its relatively short T2 as compared with other metastatic orbital lesions.

Hemangiopericytoma of the orbit treated with conservative surgery and radiotherapy.

A 23-year-old man had two recurrences following local excision of a hemangiopericytoma of the right orbit. A third local excision was followed by a course of postoperative radiation therapy (64.8 Gy [6480 rad] in 36 treatments). Seven and a half years following therapy, the patient is disease free and has experienced no side effects.

Childhood malignancies of the eye and orbit in northern Nigeria.

One hundred four histologically proven malignant tumors of the eye and orbit in children seen in Guinness Eye Clinic, Kaduna, Nigeria between 1975 and 1982 are presented. Retinoblastoma and Burkitt's lymphoma account for the majority of the tumors. The data are compared with those from Ibadan, Nigeria. Burkitt's lymphoma occurs less frequently in Kaduna, whereas the incidence of retinoblastoma is almost the same. Chloroma, which was not seen in Ibadan, accounted for 2.9% of the current series. Factors that may be contributory to the observed differences are discussed.

Ectopic lacrimal gland tissue of the orbit and sclerosing dacryoadenitis.

A 28-year-old man with unilateral proptosis was found to have sclerosing dacryoadenitis and ectopic lacrimal gland tissue of the orbit. The unusual combination simulated invasive adenocarcinoma of the lacrimal gland both clinically and histopathologically. Based on clinical and experimental observations, we propose that the acinar gland atrophy and fibrous replacement of the lacrimal gland and of the heterotopic tissue was the result of a primary developmental abnormality associated with obstruction to normal gland outflow. Physician awareness that ectopic lacrimal gland tissue in the orbit ca…

Nuclear magnetic resonance tomography of the orbit at 3.4 MHz.

The significantly different signals from the various structures within the orbit suggest that NMR tomography will prove to be a valuable method for the diagnosis of both ocular and orbital disease. The resolution of the technique is initially illustrated by the demonstration of the signal patterns from the normal globe and orbit. The characteristic features of some pathological conditions, including vitreous haemorrhage and retinal detachment, are then shown. The value and limitations of the technique in differentiating conditions such as choroidal haemorrhage from malignant melanoma, and intr…

Intracranial extension of inflammatory pseudotumor of the orbit. Case report.

Orbital pseudotumors are inflammatory lesions of the orbit of unknown etiology, which initially mimic an orbital neoplasm. Involvement of the other orbit is uncommon, and extension into the paranasal sinus rare. Intracranial extension of pseudotumor of the orbit is previously unreported. This is a case report of a patient with pseudotumor of the orbit with intracranial extension. The literature of the subject is reviewed.

Hemangiopericytoma of the orbit: a clinicopathologic study of 30 cases.

The clinical and pathologic features of 30 orbital hemangiopericytomas were reviewed. An effort was made to determine the clincopathologic characteristics that may correlate with the biologic behavior. Histopathologic criteria evaluated included degree of cellularity, nuclear atypia, mitotic activity, tumor size, and the presence of hemorrhage and necrosis. Histopathologically, 16 tumors were classified as benign, five as borderline, and nine as malignant. Follow-up information was obtained in 27 cases (mean duration of follow-up period was five and one-half years). Eight tumors recurred (30 p…

Cutaneous amebiasis of the eyelid with extension into the orbit.

A 4-month-old girl was admitted to hospital with extensive ulceration and erosion of the left eyelid where 17 days earlier the skin had been broken when hit by a ball. Despite antibiotic therapy the lesion expanded to involve the orbit. Biopsy of the eyelid on the 4th day in hospital, and examination of the eye and attached tissues removed on the 6th, failed to detect amebae until after the infant's death due to a blood transfusion 2 weeks later. Re-examination of the tissues revealed abundant amebae with characteristic morphology of Entamoeba histolytica in subcutaneous tissues of the biopsy …

Lymphoma and other lymphoid lesions of the orbit. Preliminary report.

The orbit differs from the rest of the organism, excluding the central nervous system, as concerns lymph drainage. This may possible explain some of the peculiar features in lymphoid orbital lesions. The lymphoid tumours of the orbit are discussed on the basis of the classification most widely applied. An illustrative case is reported and it is concluded that even if local therapy may prove successful, patients in whom orbital lymphoid tumours have been diagnosed should be kept under constant observation with a view to prompt institution of treatment upon evidence of generalized disease.
