BACKGROUND: The high incidence of persistent postconcussion symptoms in service members with combat-related mild traumatic brain injury has prompted research in the use of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) for management.
OBJECTIVE: The effects of HBO2 on persistent postconcussion symptoms in 60 military service members with at least 1 combat-related mild traumatic brain injury were examined in a single-center, double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled, prospective trial at the Naval Medicine Operational Training Center at Naval Air Station Pensacola.

BACKGROUND: This paper is based on the studies of the biogeochemical structure of the water column in the anoxic Fjord Hunnbunn (south-eastern Norway) performed in 2009, 2011 and 2012. This Fjord is an enclosed basin of brackish water separated by a narrow and shallow outlet to the sea with a permanently anoxic layer. We show how an oxygenated intrusion could lead to both positive and negative effects on the ecosystem state in Hunnbunn due to a change in the biogeochemical structure.

BACKGROUND: The oxygenation index (mean airway pressure × FIO2 divided by PaO2) was originally devised to measure severity of illness and predict outcome in neonatal respiratory failure. We evaluated the discrimination of a modified oxygenation index (modified with age) for predicting 28-day mortality in adults with respiratory failure (adult respiratory distress syndrome [ARDS]) using the ALVEOLI section of the ARDSNet database and validated the results in the full ARDSNet database.

INTRODUCTION: Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a non-invasive technique used to measure tissue oxygenation. In this study we describe oxyneurography (ONG), a novel application of the NIRS technique in non-invasive surface measurement of oxygenation in ulnar nerve.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Supplemental oxygen is often administered during anesthesia and in critical illness to treat hypoxia, but high oxygen concentrations are also given for a number of other reasons such as prevention of surgical site infection (SSI). The decision to use supplemental oxygen is, however, controversial, because of large heterogeneity in the reported results and emerging reports of side-effects. The aim of this article is to review the recent findings regarding benefits and harms of oxygen therapy in anesthesia and acute medical conditions.

Home oxygen therapy has been classically based on the use of compressed oxygen cylinders and portable oxygen (O(2)) concentrators. In the last few years, we have witnessed the advent of portable oxygen therapy equipment and liquid oxygen systems and even more recently portable O(2) concentrators.
