Based on morphology of metacercariae and adult worms together with molecular data from our previous study, we describe herein a new lung fluke species named Paragonimus vietnamensis sp. nov. An experiment was conducted to elucidate the origin of tetraploids (2n = 4x = 44) of Paragonimus westermani that occur together with diploid (2n = 2x = 22) and triploid (2n = 3x = 33) types in Liaoning Province, the People's Republic of China. Metacercariae of the diploid type, obtained from Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, and those of the triploid type from Tsushima, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan, were mixed and inoculated into dogs and cats. The effect of the immunomodulatory fungal metabolite cyclosporin A (CyA) on the course of Paragonimus miyazakii infection in rats was studied. Administration of CyA 15 to 19 days post-infection resulted in a significantly lower recovery rate of worms and cyst formation in the host's lungs than in controls. BACKGROUND: Members of the genus Paragonimus require at least three hosts in their life-cycles. The obligatory first intermediate hosts are freshwater snails. In Vietnam, although seven Paragonimus species have been recorded, the natural first intermediate hosts of almost all species have not been confirmed. Paragonimus harinasutai metacercariae were found in a species of freshwater crab, Indochinamon ou, collected in a small stream of Namback District, Luang Prabang Province, Lao PDR. A 47-year-old man was referred to our clinic with abnormal chest radiographs. He was free of symptoms, but his chest CT demonstrated transient migrating infiltrates. Experimental observations showed, that the muscle larva stage of the trematodes Paragonimus westermani ichunensis located in a reservoir host can enlarge its body size. A rate of growth in trematode individuals varied both among different host animals and within one host specimens. When rodents are infected with such muscle larvae, the individuals with the size exceeding 1.15 x 0.33 mm invade into the lungs oh host, while smaller individuals secondarily migrate to muscles.

The cases of two Costa Rican children with pericarditis due to Paragonimus mexicanus are reported. Clinical, epidemiological and laboratory tests are consistent with the disease. Treatment with praziquantel and bitheonol was associated with clinical cure. A review of the literature and a suggested table of diagnostic criteria are included.

Parasite-specific IgE response in rats infected with metacercariae of the lung fluke, Paragonimus ohirai, was enhanced about 8 times by Bordetella pertussis adjuvant. In rats infected by intraperitoneal transplantation of adult worms, the adjuvant markedly increased the usually low or absent parasite-specific IgE response. The most effective time of the adjuvant administration was different between the two modes of infections.
