The role of parenting in the relationship between childhood eating problems and broader behaviour problems.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has established that childhood feeding and eating problems are often related to other behavioural difficulties. Parenting practices have been implicated in both eating behaviour and broader behaviour problems. The aim of this study was to examine whether the relationship between eating and behaviour problems could be explained in part by parenting style and practices. METHODS: Seventy-seven mothers of 3- to 8-year-old children completed measures of children's eating behaviours, behaviour problems, parenting style and feeding practices. RESULTS: Eating behaviours …

Parenting and infant difficulty: testing a mutual exacerbation hypothesis to predict early onset conduct problems.

The prediction of conduct problems (CPs) from infant difficulty and parenting measured in the first 6 months of life was studied in a sample of 267 high-risk mother-child dyads. Stable, cross-situational CPs at school entry (5-6 years) were predicted by negative infancy parenting, mediated by mutually angry and hostile mother-toddler interactions at 24-42 months. Mother-child interactions late in toddlerhood were especially relevant for CPs. Contrary to predictions, difficult child behavior in the first 6 months of life was not consistently associated with CPs, either independently or in inter…

Impact of a parenting program in a high-risk, multi-ethnic community: the PALS trial.

BACKGROUND: Parenting programs have been shown to work when delivered to motivated ethnic majority parents in demonstration projects, but comparatively little is known about their impact when delivered to high-risk, multi-ethnic populations by routine local services. METHODS: The Primary Age Learning Skills (PALS) trial was a randomized controlled trial of an evidence-based parenting-group program that targeted the parent-child relationship and child literacy. Parents of 174 children were selected from a population of 672 5- and 6-year-olds attending four primary schools in a high-risk, ethni…

Perceived parenting behavior in the childhood of cocaine users: relationship with genotype and personality traits.

Low parental care during childhood, a pattern characteristic of an "affectionless control" rearing style was frequently reported in the history of addicted individuals. Parents' childrearing regimes and children's genetic predispositions, with their own behavioral characteristics, have been seen to be closely interwoven, probably affecting children's development and addictive behavior susceptibility. In the present study, parents care perception, aggressive personality traits, and genotype (serotonin transporter promoter gene--5-HTTLPR) have been investigated in cocaine users and healthy contr

Experiences of parenting young people with a diagnosis of Asperger syndrome: a focus group study.

Asperger syndrome only became recognised as a distinct diagnostic category in more recent versions of ICD 10 (WHO 1992) and DSM IV (APA 1994). Whilst a great deal of work has taken place since this time, there has been little research directed at understanding the experiences of families raising children with this diagnosis (Blacher 2003). This focus group study involved engaging directly with parents of children diagnosed with Asperger syndrome in order to understand something of their experiences with particular reference to what has or might be helpful. The aim of the study is to identify p

Individual and group-based parenting programmes for the treatment of physical child abuse and neglect.

BACKGROUND: Child physical abuse and neglect are important public health problems and recent estimates of their prevalence suggest that they are considerably more common than had hitherto been realised. Many of the risk factors for child abuse and neglect are not amenable to change in the short term. Intervening to change parenting practices may, however, be important in its treatment. Parenting programmes are focused, short-term interventions aimed at improving parenting practices in addition to other outcomes (many of which are risk factors for child abuse e.g. parental psychopathology, and …

Predictors of parenting behavior trajectories among families of young adolescents with and without spina bifida.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the utility of familial and parental variables in predicting trajectories of parenting behaviors among families of young adolescents with and without spina bifida (SB). METHOD: Sixty-eight families with a child with SB and a demographically matched comparison group (CG) of 68 families of an able-bodied child participated. Observational and questionnaire assessments of parenting behavior were collected via home visits at three time points, as were reports of parent and family functioning. RESULTS: Family conflict was negatively associated with adaptive parenting behavio…

Family management practices can safeguard children and adolescents against the effects of neighborhood conditions such as disorder and viole … family management practices. However, some neighborhood effects emerge, especially with respect to parenting strategies applied beyond the home. Our findings support research identifying the importance of parenting strategies in disadvantaged neighborhoods and strengthen this knowledge base by employing a more nuanced approach to family management strategi …

Working mechanisms of the self-compassion-based childbirth and parenting preparation program: A realist evaluation.

AIM: The Self-Compassion-Based Childbirth and Parenting Preparation Program (SCPPP) for newly expecting couples is designed to activate self-compassion at challenging moments, induce calm, and enhance co-parenting motivation during the perinatal period. However, how the program affects participants' learning processes remains unknown. This study aimed to clarify the working mechanisms of the SCPPP. METHODS: Between 2022 and 2023, a total of 18 participants (9 couples) were recruited in Japan through obstetric checkups and snowball sampling. They attended 5-week prenatal and 1-day postnatal on…

Bidirectional associations between maternal depressive symptomatology and parenting: moderating effects of breastfeeding and partner support.

Postpartum depression and parenting both play a role in shaping children's future behavior. However, there is limited understanding of the interaction and the evolving relationship between depressive symptoms and parenting practices. This study aimed to investigate the bidirectional associations between maternal depressive symptomatology and parenting (maternal self-efficacy, maternal warmth, and maternal hostile-reactive behaviors) in the postpartum period and to assess the moderating effect of breastfeeding and partner support on these associations. Latent growth curve and multigroup analyse…

Decoding Parenting Style and Emotional Connection in Infants With Cerebral Palsy: A Prospective, Multicenter Study.

OBJECTIVES: To characterize parenting styles and observe parent-infant connection in infants with or at high risk for cerebral palsy (CP) during the first year, and to examine associations with infant neuromotor severity, age, and caregiver education. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective cohort of 218 caregiver-infant dyads across 4 US sites was studied. Infants aged 3-13 months corrected age had a confirmed or high-risk for CP designation. Parenting style was measured using the Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ), and the observed parent-infant connection was assessed using the Welch…

The Impact of Nurse Home-Visiting for Pregnant and Parenting Individuals with Previous Live Births.

The Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) benefits first-time parents and their children; however, its effectiveness for families with previous children (multiparous) is not known. This quasi-experimental study used electronic health record data from three NFP sites affiliated with large health systems to evaluate the impact of NFP on pregnancy, birth, and health care utilization outcomes among multiparous families compared with propensity score-matched Medicaid-insured families who did not receive NFP. The study population included 639 multiparous pregnant individuals enrolled in NFP between 2017 an

Early parenting is associated with the development of neural reward responsiveness from childhood through adolescence.

Reward responsiveness plays an important role in promoting health and well-being in youth. Understanding associations between early experiences and variation in the typical developmental trajectory of reward responsiveness is essential to identifying potential pathways to health. We examined developmental trajectories of the reward positivity, a neurophysiological indicator of reward responsiveness, across 4 assessments in late childhood through late adolescence in 465 youth. We estimated growth curves and assessed parenting, observed via parent-child interactions, and stress exposure at age 3…

From Foundational Caregiving to Maternal Eudaimonic Well-Being: The Role of Parenting and Interaction Competence.

Background/Objectives: The transition to early parenthood is a pivotal phase influencing maternal mental health. Although parenting competence may support maternal adjustment, it is often treated as a unitary construct. This study examined the associations among foundational caregiving competence, developmental parenting and interaction competence, and eudaimonic parental well-being in first-time mothers. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 372 first-time mothers whose young children attended licensed infant daycare centers in northern Taiwan. Participants completed questionna…

Effects of a parenting intervention on child maltreatment among Filipino families: Testing mechanisms of change.

BACKGROUND: The Masayang Pamilya para sa Batang Pilipino (MaPa) program is an evidence-based, culturally adapted parenting program designed to reduce child maltreatment in Filipino families. In a randomized controlled trial, families who received MaPa had significant reductions in child maltreatment compared to control families, both at post-intervention and at one-year follow up. However, the mechanisms by which the reduction in child maltreatment is sustained has yet to be established. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated overreactive parenting and positive parenting as potential mediators of…

Lived experiences of parenting-related distress in mothers with gynecological cancer: a descriptive phenomenological study.

BACKGROUND: Mothers with gynecological cancer face unique challenges in balancing their maternal role with the demands of diagnosis and treatment. However, their experiences of parenting-related distress during the early phase remain underexplored. This study aimed to explore these experiences. METHODS: A descriptive phenomenological design was adopted. Using purposive maximum variation sampling based on age, cancer type, disease stage, residence, and time since diagnosis, 16 mothers with gynecological cancer were recruited from a tertiary hospital between January and March 2025. Data were co…

Early socioeconomic conditions to children's trait resilience: longitudinal mediation effects of mothers' and fathers' parenting.

BACKGROUND: Trait resilience is a well-established protective factor against diverse social-emotional challenges and stress-associated psychiatric disorders. Its cultivation may thus be exceptionally critical for children exposed to early financial adversity, which has been demonstrated to confer elevated vulnerabilities to psychosocial maladjustment. Grounded in the Family Stress Model with a focus on an understudied Asian population, this longitudinal study investigates how early family socioeconomic disadvantage indirectly shapes children's trait resilience through key parenting dimensions-…

Linking Autonomy-Supportive Parenting with Their Children's Autonomous Motivation Toward, and Participation in, Physical Activity.

BACKGROUND: Health behaviors and motives within family units are likely to be associated with the motives and behaviors of other family members. A potential mechanism for these relations is that parents citing autonomous motives toward physical activity are more likely to support their child's autonomous motivation to be active. The current study tested a model specifying relations between parent autonomous motivation and parent, child, and parent-and-child joint physical activity behavior with parent autonomy-supportive parenting, child-perceived autonomy support, and child autonomous motivat…

Suicide ideation in emerging adulthood: Contributions of depressive symptoms, religiosity, parenting styles and social support.

Suicide, especially among emerging adults, has continued to be a global phenomenon, demanding more in-depth empirical attention. Emerging adulthood is a probable suicidal ideation predisposing period that has received less scholarly attention. We examined the contributions of depression, religiosity, parenting styles, and social support to suicidal ideation among emerging adults. We conveniently sampled 1007 undergraduates comprising 496 (49.2 %) males and 511 (50.8 %) females whose ages ranged from 18 to 30 years with a mean age of 24 years (SD = 2.18). Results of the hierarchical multiple re…
