Warthin tumor is described using various terms, such as papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum, adenolymphoma or monomorphic adenoma. It is a medical condition related to the salivary glands, namely a benign cystic tumor which contains an epithelial component and an abundant lymphoid stroma. It is also named Warthin tumor after Aldred Scott Warthin, the pathologist who described this entity in 1929 by observing it in two patients. Warthin tumor is a benign one and ranks secondly in terms of the most common not malignant salivary gland tumor located in the parotid gland. Because of its cystic natu

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to introduce extracapsular dissection via the sternocleidomastoid muscle-parotid space approach (ECD-SMPSA) as a modified operative technique for removal of clinically benign tumors from the parotid tail.
STUDY DESIGN: The study included 52 patients with clinically benign tumors in the parotid tail, and the patients were divided into 2 groups: one group was treated with ECD-SMPSA and the other with extracapsular dissection (ECD). All of the patients were followed up for at least 2 years.
RESULTS: The ECD-SMPSA group had lower incidence of subjective Frey

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the possibility of predicting facial nerve involvement in the patients with parotid tumors using facial electroneurography (ENoG).
METHODS: In the study, 53 patients with primary parotid tumors were included in the study, 28 were benign tumors and 25 were malignant. There was no significant difference of tumor locations and sizes between the two groups. House-Brackmann facial nerve function evaluation was grade I in all the patients who received examination of facial electroneurography, including stimulation strength, amplitude, and latent time bilaterally. The facia

We present a case of a deep lobe parotid pleomorphic adenoma extending into the parapharyngeal space via an unusual morphology. This is a single patient case report of an unusual morphology with an associated review of the literature. The patient successfully underwent right parotidectomy during which it was seen that the tumor was extending above rather than through the stylomandibular tunnel, an unusual morphology for a pleomorphic adenoma. Despite the classic teaching that deep lobe parotid tumors reach the parapharyngeal space by traveling through, or below, the stylomandibular tunnel, it

An interesting case of a 09 years old girl is reported who presented with a painless, mobile, spherical, fluctuant and brilliantly translucent swelling in front of left ear. The fine needle aspiration revealed turbid dark yellow colour fluid. This cystic swelling was completely excised and the specimen on histopathology was reported as low grade Mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Recovery was uneventful. This unusual presentation of Mucoepidermoid carcinoma as a preauricular cyst is one of the rare unique reported case.

The authors report a case of Warthin's tumor associated with cat scratch disease placed in 2 nodes. Both arose at the same time and evolved rapidly. Diagnosis was made by histology after their removal. We underline the rarity of the pathology, the frequent diagnosis made after operation and recommend enuclouresection of neoplasm as the first choice, considering the benignity of the lesion and the modest aggression allowed.

Isolated intraparotid neurofibromas are exceptionally rare and often associated with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). Diagnosing these tumors proves challenging because of the clinical resemblance to primary salivary gland masses. This case report details an 18-year-old with a painful, enlarging parotid mass, diagnosed through fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) revealing myxoid stroma and spindle cells. Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed a plexiform neurofibroma involving the parotid gland and facial nerve. Histopathology validated the diagnosis, emphasizing the importance of cytological an

RATIONALE: Warthin tumor (WT) is the second most common benign tumor in salivary gland. It has a slow growth rate and most frequently occurs in the parotid gland. Most patients present with an incidental finding of a painless mass inferior/anterior to the ear. Besides the epithelial component of the tumor, WT is characteristically associated with lymphoid stroma that is considered benign. While there have been a few reports of malignant transformation of the lymphoid components in WT, cases of WT concomitant with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) are extremely rare. To the best of our knowledge, two

BACKGROUND: Parotid gland masses form part of a heterogenous subset of head and neck pathology. Surgery for both benign and malignant disease is relatively common in Australia and is associated with a diversity of idiosyncratic postoperative phenomena that might represent a challenge to identify and navigate in the primary care setting.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to provide the primary care physician with a useful guide for the assessment, evaluation and initial management of common and not-to-be-missed clinical presentations post parotid surgery, and a framework for appropriate esca

BACKGROUND: Enucleation has been reported as a minimally invasive surgery for Warthin's tumor (WT). However, the definite indications for enucleation have not been clarified.
METHODS: Enucleation was indicated by the following findings: findings of WT, cystic fluid, or benign leukocytes by fine-needle aspiration cytology; a well-margined and homogeneous pattern on imaging; and a tumor location in the tail or preauricular area of the parotid gland. We reviewed 552 cases treated with parotid gland surgery in our hospital.
RESULTS: A total of 108 tumors were treated with enucleation and include

Surgery is the preferred treatment of benign parotid lesions, but it carries a risk of complications. Therefore, the approach toward the surgery of these lesions should seek to avoid complications. There are no guidelines or recommendations for when not to operate. Integration of comorbidities and other factors shift the scales from surgery toward observation in a small subset of patients presenting with parotid tumors. When observation is chosen, the patient should be followed frequently and cautiously, and the surgeon should be prepared to change strategy to surgical excision if in doubt.

Pleomorphic adenoma, otherwise called as benign mixed tumour, is the most common salivary gland tumour which accounts for 60% of all benign salivary gland tumours. The clinical, radiological and histopathological presentations are varied. The tumour occurs in diverse anatomical sites and can consist of epithelial and mesenchymal components. In this case report, the patient reported with an asymptomatic swelling on the face. CT scan with contrast was advised. The clinical, roentgenographic findings and Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology were indicative of pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland.

BACKGROUND: The modified Blair incision is the standard facial incision for the vast majority of parotid gland lesions. We utilize three types of incisions: "classic mini-Blair" for parotid body tumors, "cervical mini-Blair" for parotid tail tumors, and "vertical mini-Blair" for anterior parotid tumors. In this study, we describe the surgical and esthetic outcomes of these individually tailored incisions.
METHODS: Patients undergoing parotidectomy between 2011 and 2013 were included. The surgical outcomes and patients' satisfaction were assessed.
RESULTS: Of 122 patients, 89 were included. A

BACKGROUND: Facial nerve weakness is the most common and most concerning complication after parotidectomy. Risk factors for this complication following surgery for benign diseases remain controversial.
OBJECTIVE: Review the frequency and prognosis of facial nerve weakness after parotidectomy and analyze potential risk factors.
DESIGN: Retrospective review of medical records.
SETTINGS: Two tertiary care centers.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We included all parotidectomies performed for benign diseases from January 2006 to December 2018. Details about the development and recovery of postoperative f
