Skin microflora and bacterial infections of the skin.

The skin is a milieu for controlled bacterial growth. Skin supports the growth of commensal bacteria, which protect the host from pathogenic bacteria. Environmental and local factors, host immunity, and organism adherence and virulence are intricately related to cutaneous infection. Resident gram-positive bacteria include Staphylococcus, Micrococcus, and Corynebacterium sp. Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes are notoriously pathogenic in the skin. In order for bacteria to be pathogenic, they must be able to adhere to, grow on, and invade the host. Bacteria possess numerous virule

Leishmania major: bacterial contamination of cutaneous lesions in experimental animals.

No bacterial contamination has been demonstrated in cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) nodule and in lesions caused by Leishmania major in Balb/c mice up to 20 days after infection. However, although many phagocytic cells (polymorphonuclear leukocytes and macrophages) were present in the CL lesion, 80% of the lesions showed bacterial contamination that developed within the first 70 days of infection. Topical treatment of the lesion with an ointment containing 15% paromomycin and 12% methylbenzethonium chloride in soft white paraffin for 20 days eliminated all the Leishmania parasites and several of

Enzootic pneumonia of pigs--a diagnostic dilemma.

In an enzootic pneumonia-free Australian pig herd, an outbreak of a severe respiratory disease in the grow-out herd was initially diagnosed as acute tracheitis and pneumonia precipitated by the dusty environment, with a superimposed mixed infection of Pasteurella multocida and Arcanobacterium pyogenes. Culture for Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, Salmonella sp and fungi was negative. The outbreak persisted. Subsequently, gross lesions consistent with enzootic pneumonia occurred, but histological lesions were equivocal and definitive tests for M hyopneumoniae remained negative. Eighteen months after t

[Cross-protective effect of the Cp39 adhesive proteins against avian Pasteurella multicida in mice].

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the cross-protective effect of a 39-kDa adhesive protein (Cp39), recombinant adhesive protein (rCp39), and capsular proteins from in vitro and in vivo grown avian P. multocida in mice. METHODS: The Cp39 was purified by electroelution from capsular proteins of in vivo grown strain C48-3. The rCp39 was expressed in E. coli B21 as a soluble protein by IPTG inducing, and purified with pMAL protein fusion and purification system. Mice of each group were subcutaneously immunized twice with 100 microg of rCp39, Cp39 or capsular proteins from in vivo or in vitro grown strain C

Etiology of respiratory disease in non-vaccinated, non-medicated calves in rearing herds.

The aim of this study was to examine the occurrence of bacterial, mycoplasmal and viral pathogens in the lower respiratory tract of calves in all-in all-out calf-rearing units. According to clinical status, non-medicated calves with and without respiratory disease signs were selected of the 40 herds investigated to analyse the micro-organisms present in healthy and diseased calves. Tracheobronchial lavage (TBL) and paired serum samples were analysed for bacteria, mycoplasmas, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), parainfluenza virus 3 (PIV3), bovine corona virus (BCV) and bovine adenovirus (BAV).

The effect of infection and lag screw fixation on the union of membranous bone grafts in a rabbit model.

Infection complicating craniofacial procedures contributes significantly to patient morbidity and health care costs. The role of fixation materials in this setting remains unclear. As foreign material, does fixation hardware increase patients' susceptibility to developing postoperative infection? Furthermore, once infection is established, should fixation hardware be removed? To answer these questions, we performed an onlay membranous bone grafting procedure to the mandible in 94 New Zealand White rabbits, applied lag-screw fixation in half the animals, and inoculated the wounds with different

High-quality genome assembly and annotation of inactivated animal vaccine bacteria strains in South Korea.

OBJECTIVES: Production of high-quality biological products depends on the careful selection and consistent management of seed strains. In this study, we generated complete genome sequences of bacterial strains employed in inactivated animal vaccines in South Korea and comprehensively examined their gene annotations. The genome data thus obtained provide a solid basis for confirming, at the strain level, whether manufacturers are using the same seed strains over time. In addition, these data offer a useful reference resource to support stable large-scale production and quality control of biolog

Parasites, Bacteria, and Associated Pathological Changes in the Digestive System of Diurnal and Nocturnal Raptors in Central Italy.

The knowledge of raptor pathogens and associated lesions may be extremely important to enhancing raptor conservation efforts and reducing pathogen spillover to humans and domesticated animals and vice versa. Parasite infections of the digestive system and associated bacteria and pathological changes were evaluated in deceased diurnal and nocturnal raptors in central Italy. Overall, the prevalence of parasites (nematodes, cestodes, trematodes, acanthocephalans, and protozoa) identified in the examined birds was 72.41%, and most of the positive raptors (71.42%) showed multiple parasite infection

Group A Streptococci-Associated Necrotizing Fasciitis following Cat Bite in an Immunocompromised Patient.

Necrotizing soft tissue infections are characterized clinically by fulminant tissue destruction, systemic signs of toxicity, and high mortality. Accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment must include early surgical intervention and antibiotic therapy. Mortality rate is very high and could be even higher in an immunocompromised host. We present a 57-year-old female with history of rheumatoid arthritis on oral corticosteroid and methotrexate therapy with painful swelling of the left hand following a cat bite that was diagnosed as having group A streptococcus pyogenes-associated necrotizing fa

How Respiratory Pathogens Contribute to Lamb Mortality in a Poorly Performing Bighorn Sheep ( Ovis canadensis ) Herd.

We evaluated bighorn sheep ( Ovis canadensis ) ewes and their lambs in captivity to examine the sources and roles of respiratory pathogens causing lamb mortality in a poorly performing herd. After seven consecutive years of observed December recruitments of <10%, 13 adult female bighorn sheep from the remnant Gribbles Park herd in Colorado, US were captured and transported to the Thorne-Williams Wildlife Research Center in Wyoming in March 2013. Ewes were sampled repeatedly over 16 mo. In April 2014, ewes were separated into individual pens prior to lambing. Upon death, lambs were necropsied a

Pathogenic bacteria carried by companion animals and their susceptibility to antibacterial agents.

Results of the investigation showed that there was a difference in the bacteria isolated from dogs, cats and their living environment. The number and species isolated from the hair and front paw samples from dogs kept outdoors and from cats were greater and more varied than those from the samples from dogs kept indoors. Staphylococcus, Micrococcus and Bacillus were frequently detected from skin surfaces. On the other hand, Escherichia, Pseudomonas, Proteus and others were detected on each sampling area on dogs kept outdoors and on cats. About 60% of the bacteria commonly causes infectious dise

[Surgical therapy for hand infections. Part I].

Due to its function, anatomy, and exposition to multiple pathogens, the hand is highly susceptible to infection. Most of these infections are post-traumatic. Isolates of pathogens from infected hands contain mainly Staphylococcus aureus and beta-hemolytic group A streptococci. We find Pasteurella canis and P. multocida from cat and dog bite wounds and Eikenella corrodens from human bite wounds. The "fight-bite clenched fist" wound, with penetration of the metacarpophalangeal joint and its high risk of septic arthritis, has always to be suspected when patients present with human bites. The ther

Molecular epidemiology investigation of outbreaks of fowl cholera in geographically related poultry flocks.

The present work describes two cases of consecutive fowl cholera outbreak series occurring in goose and turkey flocks. Most strains isolated from epidemiologically related outbreaks showed genetic relatedness, as revealed by enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus-PCR and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, suggesting that the consecutive outbreaks were due to recurrences rather than reinfections.

Prosthetic joint infection with Pasturella multocida following cat scratch: a report of 2 cases.

Infection is a known cause of failure in a total joint arthroplasty. Secondary or delayed infections are caused by a wider variety of pathogens, including Gram-negative organisms. Pasturella multocida is a Gram-negative bacillus that forms part of the normal nasopharyngeal and gastrointestinal flora of cats and many other animals. Nontrauma-associated infections also have been reported, but these are more often confined to animal handlers. We report 2 patients who had cat scratch and who developed infection of their total hip arthroplasties with P multocida. Both patients were immunocompromise

Respiratory illness in young and adult cattle caused by bovine viral diarrhea virus subgenotype 2b in singular and mixed bacterial infection in a BVDV-vaccinated dairy herd.

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is a common global health problem in dairy cattle. The definitive diagnosis of BRD is complex because its etiology involves several predisposing and determining factors. This report describes the etiology of a BRD outbreak in a dairy herd in the mesoregion of Central Eastern Paraná, which simultaneously affected young (calves and heifers) and adult (cows) Holstein-Friesian cattle. Nine biological samples, consisting of five lung samples from two cows and three suckling calves, and four nasal swab samples from heifers, were used for etiological diagnosis. The nu
