Influence of Imageability on Visual Word Recognition in Young and Older Adults.

Imageability, the ease with which a word evokes a mental image, is known to facilitate word processing in young adults. Both imageability ratings and vocabulary increase with participants' age, and semantics are thought to play an important role in lexical processing in normal aging. Yet, word processing research has rarely included older adults. The aim of this study was to investigate age-related changes in the imageability effect in visual word recognition, along with its relationship with vocabulary. In total, 47 young adults and 47 older adults performed a lexical decision task. The mater

Trial-by-trial fMRI-neurofeedback dissociates fusiform and occipital contributions to face detection and recognition.

Self-regulation of specific brain regions can be achieved using neurofeedback with real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (rt-fMRI). We leveraged this technique to dissect the role of two tightly interconnected areas implicated in face perception, by interleaving a visual task with upregulation of either the occipital (OFA) or fusiform face-responsive areas (FFA) in a trial-wise manner. Experimental participants (N = 22) successfully enhanced their target region when compared to yoked controls (N = 20). Regulation was face-selective, as evidenced by concomitant increases in other node

Working Memory Load Reduces the Electrocortical Processing of Negative Pictures but Accentuates Their Processing at Subsequent Viewing.

Cognitive load can reduce attention to negative stimuli, but its utility as an emotion regulation strategy may depend on whether it functions like avoidance, leading to short-term reductions in stimulus salience that nonetheless preserve or even heighten response to stimuli at subsequent encounters. Here, 73 participants performed a working memory task interspersed with negative and neutral pictures, prior to viewing the same pictures again alongside new negative and neutral pictures in a surprise recognition task. During the first task, working memory load reduced picture processing, replicat

Cultural differences in spatial frequency tunings to faces do not generalize to visual scenes and object stimuli.

Previous research has identified cultural differences in visual perception, where East Asians focus more on global object structure and display a larger breadth of attention compared with Westerners. East Asians rely on lower spatial frequencies (SFs) compared to Westerners for face recognition, which may be linked to this. Investigating whether such differences extend to other high-level stimulus categories would clarify if SF tuning differences reflect more general or face specific cognitive processes. The present study compared the SF tunings of Canadians and Chinese during object (Exp. 1;

Have you been there before? Decoding recognition of spatial scenes from fMRI signals in precuneus.

One potential application of forensic "brain reading" is to test whether a suspect has previously experienced a crime scene. Here, we investigated whether it is possible to decode real life autobiographic exposure to spatial locations using fMRI. In the first session, participants visited four out of eight possible rooms on a university campus. During a subsequent scanning session, subjects passively viewed pictures and videos from these eight possible rooms (four old, four novel) without giving any responses. A multivariate searchlight analysis was employed that trained a classifier to distin

Visual memory performance following mild traumatic brain injury and its relationship with intellectual functioning.

To compare the visual memory performance of uncomplicated and complicated mild TBI (mTBI) groups with that of a control group on the Rey Complex Figure Test (RCFT). We also aimed to explore the influence of factors such as age, gender, education, occupation, and intellectual functioning on visual memory in individuals with mTBI. The RCFT and the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence (WASI-II) were administered to 138 participants (90 uncomplicated mTBI patients, 19 complicated mTBI patients, and 29 controls). The mTBI patients demonstrated significantly lower scores than control participa

Brain dynamics in young infants' recognition of faces: EEG oscillatory activity in response to mother and stranger.

The brain electrical responses of 3-month-old infants were compared between images of familiar and unfamiliar faces. Infants were shown images of their mothers and of appearance-matched female strangers for 500 ms per trial while their electroencephalography was recorded. Electroencephalographic signals were segmented from stimulus onset through 1200 ms, and segments were analyzed in the time-frequency domain with a continuous wavelet transform. Differentiated responses were apparent in three time windows: 370-480, 610-690, and 830-960 ms. Across response windows, event-related synchronization

Children's neural response to contrast-negated faces is species specific.

Face recognition abilities develop dramatically during the first year of life, but comparatively little is known about the nature of face-specific perceptual development during early childhood. Face-specific effects of image appearance on recognition, including face inversion and contrast negation, are a useful means of understanding the functional properties of face perception developmentally. Here, we examined the generality of the impact of contrast negation on face perception during early childhood using event-related potentials (ERPs). Specifically, we recorded continuous electroencephalo

Cross-modal binding in developmental dyslexia.

The ability to learn visual-phonological associations is a unique predictor of word reading, and individuals with developmental dyslexia show impaired ability in learning these associations. In this study, we compared developmentally dyslexic and nondyslexic adults on their ability to form cross-modal associations (or "bindings") based on a single exposure to pairs of visual and phonological features. Reading groups were therefore compared on the very early stages of associative learning. We used a working memory framework-including experimental designs used to investigate cross-modal binding.

Mere exposure effect can be elicited in transient global amnesia.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is one of the most severe forms of anterograde amnesia seen in clinical practice, yet patients may show evidence of spared learning during the amnesic episode. The scope of spared learning in such a severe form of amnesia remains uncertain, and it is also unclear whether findings from single-case studies hold up in group studies of TGA patients. In this group study, we found evidence that extended the domain of spared learning in TGA to include the mere exposure effect, whereby enhanced preference is primed by prior exposure to stimuli. We demonstrate this effect

Behavioral change and its neural correlates in visual agnosia after expertise training.

Agnosia, the impairment in object and face recognition despite intact vision and intelligence, is one of the most intriguing and debilitating neuropsychological deficits. The goal of this study was to determine whether S.M., an individual with longstanding visual agnosia and concomitant prosopagnosia, can be retrained to perform visual object recognition and, if so, what neural substrates mediate this reacquisition. Additionally, of interest is the extent to which training on one type of visual stimulus generalizes to other visual stimuli, as this informs our understanding of the organization

Visual Implicit Learning and Speech Recognition in Adult Post-Lingual Cochlear Implant Users.

Implicit learning is thought to play an important role in speech recognition under challenging conditions. However, auditory deprivation has been proposed to influence implicit learning, including in the visual modality, although evidence in adults with post-lingual deafness is limited. Therefore, we investigated implicit visual learning and its associations with speech recognition in adults with post-lingual deafness who use cochlear implants (CIs). Thus, this study focuses on the effects of late auditory deprivation rather than on the effects of early deprivation associated with congenital d

[A case of visual agnosia for objects (author's transl)].

Following an ischemic accident in the territory of the left posterior cerebral artery, a 71 year-old woman had a severe disorder of visual recognition of objects while she quickly identified them by touch. Visual recognition of pictures, written symbols, colours and, to a lesser degree, faces was also impaired. A careful examination showed that the patient's defect could not be accounted for by general intellectual impairment, language disorder, visual acuity, or pattern discrimination deficit. These findings are consistent with the classical concept of associative agnosia: the pathophysiology

Simulation of artificial vision: II. Eccentric reading of full-page text and the learning of this task.

Reading of isolated words in conditions mimicking artificial vision has been found to be a difficult but feasible task. In particular at relatively high eccentricities, a significant adaptation process was required to reach optimal performances [Vision Res. 43 (2003) 269]. The present study addressed the task of full-page reading, including page navigation under control of subject's own eye movements. Conditions of artificial vision mimicking a retinal implant were simulated by projecting stimuli with reduced information content (lines of pixelised text) onto a restricted and eccentric area of

Selective activations and functional connectivities to the sight of faces, scenes, body parts and tools in visual and non-visual cortical regions leading to the human hippocampus.

Connectivity maps are now available for the 360 cortical regions in the Human Connectome Project Multimodal Parcellation atlas. Here we add function to these maps by measuring selective fMRI activations and functional connectivity increases to stationary visual stimuli of faces, scenes, body parts and tools from 956 HCP participants. Faces activate regions in the ventrolateral visual cortical stream (FFC), in the superior temporal sulcus (STS) visual stream for face and head motion; and inferior parietal visual (PGi) and somatosensory (PF) regions. Scenes activate ventromedial visual stream VM

Neural representations of ensemble coding in the occipital and parietal cortices.

The human visual system is able to extract summary statistics from sets of similar items, but the underlying neural mechanism remains poorly understood. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and an encoding model, we examined how the neural representation of ensemble coding is constructed by manipulating the task-relevance of ensemble features. We found a gradual increase in orientation-selective responses to the mean orientation of multiple stimuli along the visual hierarchy only when these orientations were task-relevant. Such responses to the ensemble orientation were present i

Spatiotemporal dynamics of orthographic and lexical processing in the ventral visual pathway.

Reading is a rapid, distributed process that engages multiple components of the ventral visual stream. To understand the neural constituents and their interactions that allow us to identify written words, we performed direct intra-cranial recordings in a large cohort of humans. This allowed us to isolate the spatiotemporal dynamics of visual word recognition across the entire left ventral occipitotemporal cortex. We found that mid-fusiform cortex is the first brain region sensitive to lexicality, preceding the traditional visual word form area. The magnitude and duration of its activation are

Repetition priming and the time course of object recognition: an fMRI study.

We investigated the effects of repetition priming on the time course of recognition in several visual areas of the brain using fMRI. We slowed down recognition by gradually revealing the stimuli, in order to prolong the pre-recognition phase. Activation was lower for primed than for non-primed objects overall in both the occipitotemporal region (OTR) and the intraparietal region (IPR). A difference was found between primed and non-primed objects in the rate of increase of OTR activation. We concluded that the IPR, in addition to the OTR, was affected by repetition priming, and that this effect

Visual evoked magnetic responses to central and peripheral stimulation: simultaneous VEP recordings.

Visual evoked magnetic field (VEF) and visual evoked potentials (VEP) in response to pattern reversal left half-field central (0-2 degrees, 0-5 degrees) and to left half-field peripheral stimulation (2-15 degrees, 5-15 degrees) were simultaneously recorded in 10 normal subjects. The aim was to localize the origin of the largest wave around 100 ms. By comparing the magnetic evoked 100m wave and electric evoked P100 wave, we found that the response to the small central field (0-2 degrees) stimulation was clearly evident in the VEP and not in the VEF, while the response to the peripheral field (2

Magnetic coil suppression of extrafoveal visual perception using disappearance targets.

We used magnetic brain stimulation with a butterfly coil over the occipital lobes to study extrafoveal visual field effects in six subjects. The visual test pattern was a grid of asterisks around a central fixation point, and the target was the disappearance of one asterisk for a single frame of the video monitor. Using single magnetic pulses at stimulator outputs of 55-95%, we noted robust interference effects at latencies < or = 100 ms, peaking at approximately 50-90 ms. Suppression of visual perception occurred with both transverse and sagittal alignments of the coil. When the coil was move
