The Asia-Pacific region is home to more than half of the global population and accounted for 62·6% of global deaths due to liver diseases in 2015. 54·3% of global deaths due to cirrhosis, 72·7% of global deaths due to hepatocellular carcinoma, and more than two-thirds of the global burden of acute viral hepatitis occurred in this region in 2015. Time trends, disease patterns and gender imbalance in the top 100 most cited articles in ophthalmology.

We analysed the 100 top cited articles in ophthalmology to identify and characterise the most influential articles of the past four decades. Two independent investigators searched the Scopus database to determine the 100 most frequently cited articles in ophthalmology (T100-Eye) and general non-ophthalmology journals (T100-Gen) published from 1975 to December 2017. The T100-Eye list consisted of 83 original articles and 17 reviews, and the number of citations ranged from 582 to 2833. Seventy-eight of these articles were published in three journals alone (impact factor (IF): 5.05-8.2), led by t

A systematic review of non-invasive modalities used to identify women with anal incontinence symptoms after childbirth.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Anal incontinence following childbirth is prevalent and has a significant impact upon quality of life (QoL). Currently, there is no standard assessment for women after childbirth to identify these symptoms. This systematic review aimed to identify non-invasive modalities used to identify women with anal incontinence following childbirth and assess response and reporting rates of anal incontinence for these modalities. METHODS: Ovid Medline, Allied and Complementary Medicine Database (AMED), Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Cochran

Scientometric evaluation of the global research in spine: an update on the pioneering study by Wei et al.

PURPOSE: Wei et al. evaluated the global research in spine using scientometric methods based on a sample of 13,115 papers published in 5 spine journals from 2004 to 2013. This study builds on this pioneering study and provides up-to-date and thorough information on spine based on a sample of 166,962 papers for the stakeholders. METHOD: 'Articles' and 'reviews' published in 'English' in the journals indexed by the 'Web of Science' primary databases between 1980 and 2017 were retrieved through the use of an optimal keyword set for titles of both papers and ten spine journals. The information on

PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases: Ten years of progress in neglected tropical disease control and elimination … More or less.

This year PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases (PLOS NTDs) celebrates its tenth anniversary following the publication of the first issue in 2007 [1]. When PLOS NTDs was founded, the framework of the neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) as an alternative to "other diseases" (as they were then referred to in the Millennium Development Goals) was just getting started-especially for Africa [2, 3]. In the decade since, PLOS NTDs has overseen enormous successes in NTD control and elimination. Here, we want to briefly review the ten year progress made towards the control or elimination of the diseases now

Required Reading: The Most Impactful Articles in Endoscopic Endonasal Skull Base Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery has become widely accepted in neurosurgery and otolaryngology over the last 15 years. However, there has yet to be a formal curation of the most impactful articles for an introductory curriculum to its technical evolution. METHODS: The Science Citation Index Expanded was used to generate a citation rank list (October 2015) on articles relevant to endoscopic skull base surgery. The top 35 cited articles overall, as well as the top 15 since 2009, were identified. Journal, year, author, study population, article format, and level of evidence wer

The social transformation of Singapore medicine through 55 years of the SMJ.

The Singapore Medical Journal (SMJ) has in the past 55 years reflected the phenomenal socioeconomic progress of Singapore. Publications in the pre-independent years were mainly on diseases like cholera, diphtheria, leprosy, tetanus and worm infestation. In the new millennium, the research papers included molecular genetics, health economics, obesity, Internet medicine, cancer, cosmetic surgery and palliative medicine. The annual SMA Lecture published in the SMJ provides an ethical compass for doctors to remind them of primum non nocere.

A review of the peri-operative risk stratification assessment tools used for the prediction of cardiovascular complications in non-cardiac surgery.

The development of atherosclerosis is a complex process that involves several inflammatory mechanisms. The evolution of a fatty streak to a mature occlusive atheromatous plaque occurs over several decades. However, during acute plaque rupture, to a varying degree, these same inflammatory systems are involved.Evidence exists that suggests a relationship between the activated inflammatory pathways; in the setting of lower respiratory tract or urinary tract infections and cardiac events such as unstable angina or myocardial infarctions.Peripheral vascular disease patients demonstrate atheromatous

Weight-bearing and mobilization in the postoperative care of ankle fractures: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials and cohort studies.

PURPOSE: To determine the effectiveness and safety of interventions used for rehabilitation after open reduction and internal fixation of ankle fractures. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed using both randomized trials and cohort studies. The effect of mobilization, weight-bearing, and unprotected weight-bearing as tolerated on postoperative recovery was compared using the Olerud Molander score, return to work/daily activities, and the rate of complications. RESULTS: A total of 25 articles were included. Ankle exercises resulted in earlier return to work and/or dail
