A family study of outpatients with borderline personality disorder and no history of mood disorder.

While several studies have examined psychiatric disorders in the relatives of individuals with borderline personality disorder, many of these studies have not employed a family study methodology and suffer from other methodological shortcomings. Thus, the conclusions from family data addressing the validity of borderline personality disorder, its relation to other conditions, and its distinction from mood disorders, continue to be debated. The present investigation employed a family study design with direct interviews with relatives, structured diagnostic interviews with both probands and rela

Behavioral and personality features in patients with lateralized Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Dopamine neurotransmission plays a key role in several brain activities, including motor, cognitive, and behavioral functions. Parkinson's disease (PD) typically begins with asymmetrical motor features related to asymmetrical dopamine denervation. This study was designed to examine whether distinct cognitive, behavioral, and personality features are related to this asymmetry. METHODS: Fifty-six patients with mild PD and lateralized motor features were grouped according to dominant side of motor features and evaluated using a neuropsychological assessment focused on attention and e

[Etiological and therapeutic aspects of schizoid and schizotypal personality disorder].

Following the introduction to the history of the concepts of abnormal personality, with regard to the schizoid and schizotypal forms, we present their systematic assessment in the modern classification systems. Both, the schizoid and schizotypal forms, are usually considered as schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. Biological and clinical data indicate relations to other axis-I disorders as well. However there are few systematic and strictly controlled studies on the psychotherapeutic and pharmacological treatment of schizotypal and schizoid personality disorders. Basic theoretic assumptions concer

Mania Symptoms' Complex Relations With Psychosocial Dysfunction and Personality Traits: The Role of Positive and Negative Affect.

Mania symptoms are impairing, multidimensional, and complexly related to other mood and psychopathology dimensions. For example, manic activation (e.g., restlessness and flight of ideas) and euphoria (e.g., expansive and grandiose mood) correlate with both dysphoria (e.g., depressed mood and worry) and well-being (e.g., hopefulness and energy). This empirical overlap may distort or obscure mania's observed relations to psychosocial dysfunction and personality traits. Adults (N = 605; M = 46 years old; 57% women), recruited from community mental health centers and by random telephone dialing, c

At-risk mental states and personality traits: A cluster analysis approach on a group of help-seeking young adults.

INTRODUCTION: Research on the relationship between personality and psychosis onset is growing, with the goal of preventing or intervening early in patients' vulnerability. The identification of individuals with at-risk mental states has enabled the development of early intervention strategies, such as Programma 2000, a youth mental health service that was implemented in Milan (Italy). AIMS: Focusing on the 18-25 age range-the time window with the highest incidence of psychotic onset-this study aims to identify the personality traits that may characterize the at-risk mental states and the soci

Assessment of depression: using the MMPI, Millon, and Millon-II.

The analysis examined how the MMPI, original Millon, and Millon-II may be used for the assessment of clinical and personality characteristics of depressed patients. High-point code-type analysis of data from 133 depressed inpatients yielded seven MMPI personality profiles (incapacitated-depressive, intropunitive-depressive, caught psychopath, hysteroid-dysphoric, schizotypal-depressive, ruminative-depressive, and psychotic-depressive) and eight Millon personality profiles (avoidant-depressive, conforming-depressive, hostile-depressive, hysteroid-depressive, disenfranchised-depressive, guilty-d

Personality development after physical abuse.

Personality development after child abuse was studied in 39 children who had, on average, been admitted to hospital five and a half years previously. In contrast to a control group, the abused children had fewer friends, lower ambitions, and lower self esteem. They were more serious, shy, and subdued on a personality assessment and were more likely than the control children to have behaviour disturbances recorded on a questionnaire for teachers. Their mothers also noted a higher incidence of behaviour disorders than mothers of control children. Child abuse has long term effects on the personal…

Use of the MMPI-2 with Asian populations.

Psychological tests developed in the United States are being widely adapted into other languages and cultures around the world. This article examines the generalizability and utility of personality assessment instruments across cultures and addresses methodological issues related to using personality questionnaires in countries different from the one in which they were developed. This article specifically highlights the application of objective psychological tests in Asia with special emphasis on the most widely used and internationally adapted personality instrument, the Minnesota Multiphasic…

Validation of the Five-Factor Model Antagonistic Triad Measure.

The personality constructs psychopathy, narcissism, and Machiavellianism, collectively described as the Dark Triad (DT), all reference socially aversive behavioral tendencies. Each construct is theorized to have features that differentiate it from others. Unfortunately, existing measures of the DT suffer from several problems. The present study compared newly developed measures of psychopathy (Super-Short Form of the Elemental Psychopathy Assessment), narcissism (Super-Short Form of the Five-Factor Narcissism Inventory), and Machiavellianism (Super-Short Form of the Five-Factor Machiavellianis

Personality Dimension, Suicidal Intent, and Lethality: A Cross-sectional Study of Suicide Attempters with or Without Personality Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Although personality disorders (PD) are known risk factors for suicide attempts, studies on personality dimension are scarce, which may provide further insights for interventions. METHODS: The relationship between personality dimension, lethality, intent, and quality of life (QOL) was studied in suicide attempters with or without PD. We used the international personality disorder examination (IPDE) dimensional score, the scale for assessment of lethality of suicide attempt (SALSA), suicide intent scale (SIS), and WHOQOL-BREF QOL scale, to assess a sample of suicide attempters admi

How Our Caregivers Shape Who We Are: The Seven Dimensions of Attachment at the Core of Personality.

Psychology defines personality as the stable traits of an individual, and cognitive research suggests that a set of core beliefs is at the root of these traits. From this perspective, two major questions remain unanswered: (1) What are the core beliefs that make up personality? (2) How are they acquired? An interesting answer is provided by attachment theory, according to which attachment is at the basis of personality. The current theoretical formulation, however, does not sufficiently clarify the relationship between the two. Adopting a cognitive-clinical approach, we put forward a novel ver

Convergent and discriminant validity of the Five Factor Form.

The current study tests the convergent and discriminant validity of a modified version of the Five Factor Model Rating Form (FFMRF), a one-page, brief measure of the five-factor model. The Five Factor Form (FFF) explicitly identifies maladaptive variants for both poles of each of the 30 facets of the FFMRF. The purpose of the current study was to test empirically whether this modified version still provides a valid assessment of the FFM, as well as to compare its validity as a measure of the FFM to other brief FFM measures. Two independent samples of 510 and 330 community adults were sampled,
