[Psychological aspects of systemic approach to diagnostics of mental and immunological disorders in diffuse-nodular form of Hashimoto's thyroiditis].

Authors have studied 162 patients with the diffuse-nodular form of chronic autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT). Alexithymic personality type was found to be prevalent in patients in the euthyroid phase (51.9%). In autoimmune thyroiditis, alexithymia and certain cytokine parameters were correlated with psychopathological symptoms as asthenia, anxiety and depression which might be caused by their participation in the pathogenesis of non-psychotic mental disorders during the euthyroid phase. The linkage of alexithymia with certain emotional-personal parameters allows to regard it as one of the component

Brain, environment, heredity, and personality.

Behavior genetics research, committed to a model of the origins of personality and intellectual development restricted to heredity and environment, consistently generates evidence for two types of environmental influences. One of these, termed the between-family or shared environment, creates no conceptual problems. The other, termed the nonshared or within-family or unique environment, does. The other, termed the nonshared or within-family or unique environment, does. The latter accounts for a substantial portion of the variance in personality and intellect, it must be unique to each individu

Criterion a of the alternative model of personality disorders: Structure and validity in a community sample.

The alternative model of personality disorders were designed to represent the presence of personality dysfunction (Criterion A) and pathological personality traits (Criterion B). Much of the empirical attention toward this model has been directed toward testing the performance of Criterion B. However, the development of the Levels of Personality Functioning Scale-Self-Report (LPFS-SR) has sparked a growing amount of interest and debate around Criterion A. Specifically, there is significant disagreement in the research examining the validity of the LPFS-SR, with ongoing discrepancies regarding

Crack cocaine smokers as adult children of alcoholics: the dysfunctional family link.

The paper presents data on a sample (N = 61) of crack-cocaine-dependent patients who were treated on an inpatient detoxification unit. The investigation explores adult child of an alcoholic status as a possible etiological factor in the development of addiction to crack cocaine. Data suggests the prevalence of adult child of an alcoholic (ACA) status in this population (61%). Adult child of a dysfunctional family (ACDF) status is also explored as possibly playing an important role as an antecedent or determinant of addiction. The vast majority of patients are adult children of a dysfunctional

Which personality traits are necessary conditions for problematic alcohol use? Insights from a 23-year longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Personality traits have been consistently linked to alcohol use. High neuroticism and extraversion and low agreeableness and conscientiousness are known risk factors for both alcohol use frequency and problematic use across the lifespan. These associations have mostly been studied in the sufficient causality domain ("if X, then probably Y"), whereas little is known about these relationships in the necessary causality one ("if not X, then not Y"). Knowing that a variable is a necessary cause for an outcome helps identify who will be at risk for the outcome and who will be v

An examination of genetic and environmental factors related to negative personality traits, educational attainment, and economic success.

Personality variables are associated with educational attainment and socioeconomic outcomes. In this study we incorporated a polygenic score derived from the largest genome-wide association study (GWAS) of educational attainment to date (Lee et al., 2018) into the Interactionist Model of R. D. Conger, Martin, and Masarik (2021) that describes the influence of socioeconomic factors on individual development. The inclusion of a polygenic score predictive of educational attainment (PS-Edu) into this model, and the use of the multigeneration, longitudinal Family Transitions Project (FTP) provide a

Psychological characteristics of maltreated children: putative risk factors and consequences.

Although there is considerable evidence that the maltreatment of children is widespread and that it can have significant adverse effects on the victims, specific abuse-outcome patterns are not obvious beyond the link between physical abuse and aggression, and the link between sexual abuse and poor sexual adjustment. Although concepts of invulnerability or child resilience are somewhat controversial (see Rutter 1983), some children from severely maltreating backgrounds do not evidence apparent adverse outcomes (e.g. Farber & Egeland 1987, Herrenkohl et al 1991). It is unknown whether the more f

Proportion of unmarried siblings of homosexual and non homosexual gender-dysphoric patients.

Among the siblings of homosexuals, a lack of sexual and romantic interest in women may be independent of erotic feelings for men. This study investigated the sexual histories of siblings of gender-dysphoric outpatients. The patients were classified into three groups: non homosexual males, homosexual males and homosexual females. Their siblings consisted of 301 brothers and 284 sisters over the age of 25. Logistic regression showed that the brothers of the homosexual male patients were significantly less likely to have been married, either legally or common-law, than the brothers of the other g

"Down Syndrome is Not a Curse": parent Perspectives on the Medicalization of Down Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Potential clinical interventions to mitigate or eliminate symptoms of Down syndrome (DS) continue to be an active area of pre-clinical and clinical research. However, views of members of the DS community have yet to be fully explored. METHODS: We conducted a survey with parents/caregivers of people with DS (n = 532) to explore interest in potential therapeutic approaches during fetal development or childhood that may improve neurocognition and modulate the DS phenotype. We qualitatively analyzed open-ended responses. RESULTS: Some respondents rejected the development of therapies

Psychopathology Subgroups and HIV Risk Among Women in Psychiatric Treatment.

Among individuals with mental illness, the HIV infection rate is generally found to be substantially higher than in the general population. Understanding dimensions or subtypes of psychopathology linked with HIV risk behavior may enable development of targeted interventions to reduce HIV transmission. This study identified subgroups of women (n = 243) receiving outpatient psychiatric treatment based upon cluster analysis of indices of personality disorder and clinical symptom syndromes. High, medium, and low psychiatric severity cluster subgroups were found to differ significantly on key HIV r

Psychosomatic subdecompensation.

The ego of a psychosomatic patient enters the relations with the external world in a very archaic way. In new traumatic situations such a personality structure possesses a very poor repertoire of adaptation mechanisms. Owing to the lack of intrapsychic elaboration of the trauma, the conflict is solved in an "interpersonal" way. The authors emphasize the importance of interpersonal conflict as an actual necessity of maintaining the connection with reality. Such a response in the development corresponds to the fixation or regression to the conflict with the object from the subphase of practising

Rethinking treatment motivation in addiction care: executive functions and personality over clinical severity- a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol and substance use disorders are chronic mental disorders characterised by high relapse rates, and treatment motivation is one of the most important determinants of success in the treatment process. However, in clinical practice, significant differences in treatment motivation are observed among individuals with similar levels of addiction severity. This suggests that motivation may be closely related not only to clinical severity indicators but also to cognitive and personality-related processes. AIM: The aim of this study is to examine the relationships between treatment

The relationship of parenting styles and social competency to Type A behavior in children.

This study examined parenting styles, Type A behavior in parents and children, and social competence in children. Fifty 1st-6th grade children, parents, and their teachers participated. Type A behavior in parents was associated with a controlling style of parenting, but not with pressuring the child to achieve. Parenting styles of achievement pressure and high control were related to impatient and aggressive behaviors in children, as measured by the MYTH, a teacher-scored Type A behavior instrument. In addition, impatience and aggressiveness in the children were negatively correlated with the

The utility of the MAPI in the assessment of depression.

The relationships between the Millon Adolescent Personality Inventory (MAPI; Millon, Green, & Meagher, 1982) and depression, as assessed by the Multiscore Depression Inventory (MDI; Berndt, 1968) were examined. Elevations on the MDI subscales were positively related to elevations on MAPI personality style Scale 2 (Inhibited) and Scale 8 (Sensitive) and on six of the eight MAPI expressed concerns scales. MAPI personality style Scale 4 (Sociable) and Scale 5 (Confident) were negatively correlated with the MDI. MAPI code types containing either Scale 2 or 8 were associated with a high MDI full-sc
