Ahmed valve implantation to control intractable glaucoma after phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation in a dog.

An 11-year-old spayed female Miniature Poodle presented with bilateral senile cataracts. Treatment was cataract removal by phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation. Five hours after surgery the operated right eye was partially closed and painful. The right pupil was fully dilated, there was generalized corneal edema, and intraocular pressure (IOP) was increased. After 12 h of medication IOP was controlled. Ten weeks after surgery the owners reported cloudiness of right eye, and the dog was again evaluated. The IOP was again increased and an Ahmed valve was implanted. This case des…

[Postoperative inflammatory response to phacoemulsification and implantation of 2 types of foldable intraocular lenses in pseudoexfoliation syndrome].

BACKGROUND: Patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) are known to have a greater degree of inflammation after cataract surgery when compared to patients with senile cataract in otherwise healthy eyes. We performed a randomised, prospective study to compare the influence of the intra-ocular lens (IOL) material of two different IOLs on the postoperative inflammation of the anterior chamber. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 28 eyes of 27 patients with PEX and cataract and 29 eyes of 29 control patients were included in this study. The IOLs used were the hydrophilic, acrylic lens: Bausch&Lomb-Hydrovie

Comparison of the protective effects of methylcellulose and sodium hyaluronate on corneal swelling following phacoemulsification of senile cataracts.

The protective effects of two viscoelastic substances (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and sodium hyaluronate) on the cornea during phacoemulsification of senile cataracts were investigated in a prospective, randomized, clinical study. The viscoelastic substances were placed in the anterior chamber before and during phacoemulsification. The mean increase in central corneal thickness (measured by ultrasonic pachymetry) on the first postoperative day was statistically significantly higher (P less than .05) in the methylcellulose group (35 eyes) than in the sodium hyaluronate group (35 eyes). Five …

Postoperative Flare and Corneal Endothelial Cell Loss After Eight-Chop Technique Phacoemulsification: A Prospective Observational Study.

Objectives: The Eight-chop technique is a mechanically based nuclear segmentation method designed to improve surgical efficiency and reduce intraocular tissue stress during phacoemulsification. Early postoperative aqueous flare serves as an objective indicator of surgical invasiveness, whereas corneal endothelial cell density (CECD) loss represents a structural measure of endothelial injury. Although both parameters are clinically important, their relationship has not been systematically investigated in the context of this newer mechanical fragmentation approach. Methods: This prospective obse…
