Gas exchange, growth, and defense responses of invasive Alliaria petiolata (Brassicaceae) and native Geum vernum (Rosaceae) to elevated atmospheric CO2 and warm spring temperatures.

PREMISE OF STUDY: Global increases in atmospheric CO2 and temperature may interact in complex ways to influence plant physiology and growth, particularly for species that grow in cool, early spring conditions in temperate forests. Plant species may also vary in their responses to environmental changes; fast-growing invasives may be more responsive to rising CO2 than natives and may increase production of allelopathic compounds under these conditions, altering species' competitive interactions. METHODS: We examined growth and physiological responses of Alliaria petiolata, an allelopathic, inva

Cellular basis of ABA-induced de novo meristem formation and sex-type conversion in Ceratopteris gametophytes.

Meristems house pluripotent stem cells and sustain continuous growth and organogenesis in land plants. Unlike seed plants, whose gametophytes lack meristems, fern gametophytes initiate and maintain meristems, enabling growth independently from sporophytes. In the model fern Ceratopteris richardii, gametophytes develop into either hermaphrodites or males. Hermaphrodites maintain multicellular meristems and secrete the pheromone antheridiogen, directing undetermined gametophytes to become male. Under constant antheridiogen exposure, males lack meristems and exclusively produce sperm-bearing anth

A Cold-Active Flavin-Dependent Monooxygenase from Janthinobacterium svalbardensis Unlocks Applications of Baeyer-Villiger Monooxygenases at Low Temperature.

Cold-active enzymes maintain a large part of their optimal activity at low temperatures. Therefore, they can be used to avoid side reactions and preserve heat-sensitive compounds. Baeyer-Villiger monooxygenases (BVMO) utilize molecular oxygen as a co-substrate to catalyze reactions widely employed for steroid, agrochemical, antibiotic, and pheromone production. Oxygen has been described as the rate-limiting factor for some BVMO applications, thereby hindering their efficient utilization. Considering that oxygen solubility in water increases by 40% when the temperature is decreased from 30 to 1

Codon Optimization of Insect Odorant Receptor Genes May Increase Their Stable Expression for Functional Characterization in HEK293 Cells.

Insect odorant receptor (OR) genes are routinely expressed in Human Embryonic Kidney (HEK) 293 cells for functional characterization ("de-orphanization") using transient or stable expression. However, progress in this research field has been hampered because some insect ORs are not functional in this system, which may be due to insufficient protein levels. We investigated whether codon optimization of insect OR sequences for expression in human cells could facilitate their functional characterization in HEK293 cells with stable and inducible expression. We tested the olfactory receptor co-rece

Courtship behavior of the castniid palm borer, Paysandisia archon: potential roles of male scents and visual cues in a day-flying moth.

The castniid palm borer, Paysandisia archon (Burmeister) (Lepidoptera: Castniidae), is a South American moth that in the last ten years has become a major pest of palm trees in the Mediterranean region. Current knowledge on the reproductive behavior of this diurnal moth suggests the importance of both visual and chemical cues, in particular the production of a male pheromone emitted during a specific scratching behavior. Male-produced scents have diverse functions in lepidopteran sexual communication but generally act during courtship behavior, leading to complex, stereotyped courtship sequenc

Selective olfactory attention of a specialised predator to intraspecific chemical signals of its prey.

Prey-specialised predators have evolved specific cognitive adaptations that increase their prey searching efficiency. In particular, when the prey is social, selection probably favours the use of prey intraspecific chemical signals by predatory arthropods. Using a specialised ant-eating zodariid spider, Zodarion rubidum, which is known to prey on several ant species and possesses capture and venom adaptations more effective on Formicinae ants, we tested its ability to recognise chemical cues produced by several ant species. Using an olfactometer, we tested the response of Z. rubidum towards ai

The human body odor compound androstadienone leads to anger-dependent effects in an emotional Stroop but not dot-probe task using human faces.

The androgen derivative androstadienone is a substance found in human sweat and thus is a putative human chemosignal. Androstadienone has been studied with respect to effects on mood states, attractiveness ratings, physiological and neural activation. With the current experiment, we aimed to explore in which way androstadienone affects attention to social cues (human faces). Moreover, we wanted to test whether effects depend on specific emotions, the participants' sex and individual sensitivity to smell androstadienone. To do so, we investigated 56 healthy individuals (thereof 29 females takin

Suckling.

Suckling is the only behavior that is common among mammals. In newborn albino rats it is originally elicited by amniotic fluid deposited by the mother during parturition. Subsequent suckling is stimulated by saliva deposited on the nipples by the infant rats. Internal controls over the volume of milk suckled do not appear until infant rats are about 2 weeks of age at which time gastric distension, milk, systemic dehydration, and intestinal hormone cholecystokinin suppress milk intake derived through suckling. The development of controls over suckling appetite appears to parallel that of consum

Semiochemical inhibitors for protecting conifers from bark beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in the Western United States: research, development, and application.

In the western U.S., the research, development and application (RD&A) of semiochemical inhibitors for protecting conifers from bark beetles has focused on antiaggregation pheromones and, to a lesser extent, nonhost volatiles. The sequence begins with identifying potential inhibitors by searching relevant literature; sampling the volatile profiles of bark beetle extracts, frass, infested host materials, hosts, nonhosts, and the forest environment; and/or conducting gas chromatographic-electroantennographic detection analyses of bark beetle antennae. Promising inhibitors are then evaluated for l…

Vasopressin and developmental onset of flank marking behavior in golden hamsters.

Golden hamsters start displaying flank marking behavior (a form of scent marking) around postnatal day 20 (P-20). Because the behavior is dependent upon the central activity of arginine vasopressin (AVP), the present study was conducted to correlate this activation with changes in the vasopressinergic system. A first set of experiments was performed to compare flank marking activity between P-18 and P-22. A second set of experiments was performed to compare the density of AVP receptors between the age periods and assess responsiveness to AVP microinjection. Finally, a third set of experiments

Ecological parameters of the (S)-9-methylgermacrene-B population of the Lutzomyia longipalpis complex in a visceral leishmaniasis area in São Paulo state, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is an important public health challenge in Brazil because of the high number of human and canine cases reported annually. Leishmania infantum is the etiological agent of VL and Lutzomyia longipalpis is its main vector. However, evidence suggests that this taxon constitutes a species complex. In Sao Paulo state, there are two populations of Lu. longipalpis, each secreting distinct pheromones, (S)-9-methylgermacrene-B and Cembrene 1; both have been associated with different patterns of VL transmission. The aim of the present study was to investigate the te…

Parapatric distribution and sexual competition between two tick species, Amblyomma variegatum and A. hebraeum (Acari, Ixodidae), in Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: Amblyomma variegatum and A. hebraeum are two ticks of veterinary and human health importance in south-east Africa. In Zimbabwe they occupy parapatric (marginally overlapping and juxtaposed) distributions. Understanding the mechanisms behind this parapatry is essential for predicting the spatio-temporal dynamics of Amblyomma spp. and the impacts of associated diseases. It has been hypothesized that exclusive competition between these species results from competition at the levels of male signal reception (attraction-aggregation-attachment pheromones) or sexual competition for mates.…

Understanding the Chemosensory and Detoxification Mechanisms in the Oriental Fruit Fly, Bactrocera dorsalis.

Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) is a major fruit-feeding pest that poses a severe and persistent threat to the horticulture industry in tropical and subtropical regions. Methyl eugenol (ME) is a powerful male-specific attractant phytochemical and pheromone precursor that has been widely exploited in lure-and-kill pest management programs. Upon ingestion, ME is metabolized (E)-coniferyl alcohol (E-CF) and 2-allyl-4,5-dimethoxyphenol (DMP), which are stored in the male rectal glands and released during courtship to attract females. Despite its ecological significance, the fundamental molecular mech

Mutation-Guided Recovery of Ligand-Compatible Holo-Like Conformations in Proteins with Cryptic Pockets.

Cryptic pockets are transient ligand-binding sites that remain hidden in apo protein structures and become accessible only through conformational change, making them difficult to identify and exploit in structure-based ligand discovery. Although recent AI/ML approaches can identify residues associated with cryptic pocket formation, they do not directly yield the corresponding holo-like conformations. Enhanced-sampling and mixed-solvent strategies can promote pocket opening, but often under non-native conditions and without demonstrating stable ligand-bound holo-like states. Here, we present a
