Histological Characteristics of Port-Wine Stains with Complete Regression After Photodynamic Therapy Treatment: A 7-Year Follow-Up.

Background: Vascular-targeted photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an effective alternative treatment choice for port-wine stains (PWSs). The histological characteristics of PWSs after PDT treatment have not yet been reported. Objective: To investigate the morphological features of PWSs treated by PDT and define the histopathological characteristics of PWS that achieve clinical cure. Methods: Thirteen patients with facial PWSs, who presented with complete regressive PWS lesions after a mean of 4.38 (standard deviation = 4.907) sessions of PDT. Post-treatment biopsy samples were obtained from each pat

Experimental study of combined photodynamic and photothermal therapy in the treatment of port wine stain.

Laser therapy has become the golden standard of port wine stain (PWS), but complete clearance of resistant PWSs is still difficult. The application of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in the treatment of PWS shows potential in clinical practice, especially for large-area and deep lesions. In this work, in vivo animal experimental investigation on the coupling effect of PDT with multi-pulse laser (MPL) irradiation on the treatment of PWS was conducted by using a dorsal skin window chamber model. Through visualization of the thermal response of blood vessels and damage evaluation, it is found that the

Effective topical treatments using innovative NNO-tridentate vanadium(IV) complexes-mediated photodynamic therapy in a psoriasis-like mouse model.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that can significantly impact the quality of human life. Various drug treatments are available; however, due to their long-term severe side effects the usage of these drugs is limited. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been clinically approved for skin diseases due to its non-invasive nature. We present novel NNO-tridentate vanadium(IV) complexes used in PDT for anti-inflammatory effects in an imiquimod-induced psoriasis-like skin disease mouse model. The vanadium(IV) complexes (1-4) were synthesized using the NNO-tridentate ligand with a benzo[i]d

Clinical study of anogenital condyloma acuminata treatment with photodynamic therapy including immunocompromised conditions.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection is highly prevalent worldwide, and one of its consequences is the external genital wart, or Condyloma Acuminata (CA). The present study used Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) to treat CA lesions. PDT treated 23 patients with a clinical diagnosis of multifocal and unifocal CA. Patients were divided into Group 1 (G1, Patients without pathologies associated with immunodeficiency) and Group 2 (G2, patients with pathologies associated with immunodeficiency). In the G1 group (19 patients), PDT resulted in a Complete Response in 68.4% (average 5 PDT cycles), Partial Resp

Optical coherence tomography guided conjunctival tick infestation treatment: A case report.

Conjunctival infestation of ticks is not a common event, even in endemic regions. We presented a case of conjunctival tick attachment treatment guided by spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). This patient experienced a two-day history of pain, itching and redness in the right eye. Anterior segment examination revealed a tick body in the lower bulbar conjunctiva. No invasion of the sclera was confirmed with anterior segment SD-OCT. Tick was removed with conjunctival excision. We would like to state that the use of SD-OCT can be useful in clinical practice for safe and complete

OPD (Online Plasmodium Diagnosis): An ALA-PpIX based functional assay to predict active malaria.

BACKGROUND: Malaria kills one child every 30 seconds reaching up to 3000 children a day. The mosquito borne malarial parasite invades the blood stream and hijacks red blood cells (RBCs). One of the medical successes of the 20th century was development of malaria diagnostic tests. However, poor specificity and sensitivity along with the inability of these assays to distinguish active malarial infections has put the management scheme in jeopardy. AIM: To develop an in-vitro functional assay to predict active malarial infections. METHODS: Plasmodium falciparum (3D7) parasites were incubated wit

IR-808 loaded nanoethosomes for aggregation-enhanced synergistic transdermal photodynamic/photothermal treatment of hypertrophic scars.

Synergistic transdermal photodynamic therapy (PDT)/photothermal therapy (PTT) has emerged as a novel strategy for improving hypertrophic scar (HS) therapeutic outcomes. Herein, a near-infrared heptamethine cyanine dye, named IR-808, has been selected as the desirable photosensitizer owing to its PDT and PTT properties. Benefitting from the transdermal delivery ability of ethosomes (ESs), IR-808 loaded nanoethosomes (IR-808-ES) have been prepared as a novel nanophotosensitizer for the transdermal PDT/PTT of HSs. The special structure of IR-808 aggregate distribution in the ES lipid membrane enh

Dermoscopy and ultrosound monitoring actinic keratosis with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma: A case report and literature review.

Actinic keratosis(AK) is a common premalignant skin lesion that can progress to invasive squamous cell carcinoma(iSCC). Clinically, AK presents as reddish or brownish macules, papules, or hyperkeratotic plaques. AK cannot be reliably predicted whether it will transform into invasive carcinomas, so skin biopsy is currently a gold standard for identifying suspicious malignancy. Currently, there are non-invasive methods to help diagnose and determine the difference between AKs and iSCC. For example, dermoscopy and ultrasound can be very useful in diagnosing and monitoring skin diseases non-invasi

Hyperspectral imaging assessment for radiotherapy induced skin-erythema: Pilot study.

Skin cancer (SC) is a widely spread disease in the USA, Canada, and Australia. Skin cancer patients may be treated by many different techniques including radiation therapy. However, radiation therapy has side effects, which may range from skin erythema to skin necrosis. As erythema is the early evidence of exposure to radiation, monitoring erythema is important to prevent more severe reactions. Visual assessment (VA) is the gold standard for evaluating erythema. Nevertheless, VA is not ideal, since it depends on the observer's experience and skills. Digital photography and hyperspectral imagin

A Unique Multifunctional Luminescent Probe for Self-Monitoring Photodynamic Therapy by Detecting H2S in Cancer Cells.

With the increasing interest in photodynamic therapy (PDT), the assessment of the level of reactive oxygen species produced during PDT has also become increasingly important. However, most of the fluorescent probes for reactive oxygen species (ROS) evaluation were separated from photosensitizers in the PDT process, resulting in ex situ and asynchronous treatment feedback. Additionally, the consumption of ROS by these fluorescent probes themselves will inevitably affect the therapeutic effect. Herein, inspired by the redox balance in the cell, we developed a multifunctional hydrogen sulfide (H2

Hypoxia-Responsive Polyprodrug Nanocarriers for Near-Infrared Light-Boosted Photodynamic Chemotherapy.

The hypoxia environment inside tumors is tightly associated with tumor growth, metastasis, and drug resistance. However, the heterogonous distribution of hypoxic areas limits the efficacy of hypoxia-activatable drug delivery systems. Herein, we report the hypoxia-activable block copolymer polyprodrugs, which are composed of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and copolymerized segments of ortho-nitrobenzyl-linked camptothecin (CPT) methacrylate and 2-(piperidin-1-yl)ethyl methacrylate (PEMA) monomers. After self-assembly in aqueous solution, indocyanine green (ICG) photosensitizers were encapsulated t

Hypericin-Loaded Transferrin Nanoparticles Induce PP2A-Regulated BMI1 Degradation in Colorectal Cancer-Specific Chemo-Photodynamic Therapy.

Epigenetically regulated therapeutic intervention of cancer is an emerging era of research in the development of a promising therapy. Epigenetic changes are intrinsically reversible and providing the driving force to drug resistance in colorectal cancer (CRC). The regulation of polycomb group (PcG) proteins, BMI1 and EZH2, and the associated CRC progression hold promises for a novel treatment regime. The present study enlightens targeted photodynamic therapy (PDT) with potential photosensitizer hypericin nanocomposite in the development of epigenetic-based CRC therapy. We have synthesized hype

Effectiveness of Photodynamic Therapy in the Treatment of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases.

During the last decade, photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been extensively investigated for the treatment of periodontal and peri-implant infections. Nonetheless, contradicting clinical and microbiological outcomes and only results on a short-term basis have been reported so far, thus making it difficult to conclude on clinically relevant recommendations for the use of PDT. Therefore, the aim of this narrative review is to provide an overview of the current evidence from randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) evaluating the potential clinical and/or microbiological benefit for the use of PD

Exposure to diode laser (810nm) affects the bacterial adherence and biofilm formation in a E. faecalis biofilm model.

BACKGROUND: A large number of studies have shown that diode laser can effectively kill Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis). However, to our knowledge there has been little information regarding high-level analysis of sterilization mechanism on E. faecalis biofilm models after laser irradiation. This study provides emphasis on the E. faecalis viability and exopolysaccharide content after laser irradiation. It also aims to examine whether diode laser affects the biofilm formation and adherence of E. faecalis biofilm at the level of gene expression. METHODS: E. faecalis (ATCC 29,212) was inocula
