Crepuscular vocal partitioning and thermal limits on calling behavior in the Bubbling Kassina (Kassina senegalensis) in a sub-equatorial savanna.

Acoustic communication in anurans is energetically costly and constrained by environmental factors, especially in open savanna ecosystems where extreme temperature fluctuations, desiccation risks, and wind-induced noise pose significant challenges to signal propagation and caller physiology. We analyzed the acoustic ecology of the widespread bubbling Kassina (Kassina senegalensis) in Mozambique, and compared it with that of other locations. We examined the influence of temperature, photoperiod and moonlight on calling phenology. Calling phenology was strongly seasonal driven, while daily patte…

Effects of environment and management on mammary development in dairy animals.

The structural development of the mammary gland is the primary physiological determinant of lifetime lactational capacity in dairy species. … ngs. Conversely, management interventions such as accelerated pre-weaning nutrition, stage-specific photoperiod modulation, and increased milking frequency are shown to positively program the MaSC niche, enhancing epithelial cell expansion and lactation. Furthermore, this review contrasts established bovine models with the dromedary camel, highlighting unique …

Effect of the pineal hormone melatonin on teleost fish phagocyte innate immune responses after in vitro treatment.

Although neuroendocrine-immune system interaction has been shown in teleost fish, no study has evaluated the role of melatonin (Mel) on fish immune response even considering that it is affected by the photoperiod. Gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L.) and sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) head-kidney leucocytes were incubated with Mel (0-control-, 20 pM-400 microM) and leucocyte viability and main innate cellular immune parameters were evaluated. Overall, seabream and sea bass head-kidney leucocytes incubated with low (similar to physiological) doses of Mel unchanged the innate immune response…

Effects of pinealectomy on SCN electrical firing rhythm in Djungarian hamsters.

Djungarian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus) from a long day photoperiod (16:8 h light-dark cycle) were either pinealectomized (PINX; n = 7) or sham-pinealectomized (SHAM; n = 6). One week after surgery coronal brain slices (500 microm), containing the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), were prepared. The firing-rate rhythm of SCN neurons was recorded over at least a 22 h period. The amplitude of the firing rhythm for SHAM slices (3.42 +/- 0.26 Hz) was not significantly different from PINX slices (3.45 +/- 0.29 Hz). Maxima and minima of the firing rhythms also could not be distinguished statistically b…

Suprachiasmatic nuclei influence torpor and circadian temperature rhythms in hamsters.

Siberian hamsters were maintained in a short-day photoperiod (8 h light-day) at 15 degrees C; body temperature (Tb) and locomotor activity were telemetrically recorded at 10-min intervals over the course of 5 mo. Animals manifesting repeated torpor bouts (Tb less than 30 degrees C for several hours) were subjected to lesions of the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), pinealectomy, or sham operations. In the 15 wk after surgery, none of the animals with bilateral lesions of the SCN exhibited torpor; circadian Tb and locomotor activity rhythms, as determined by cosinor and power spectral analysis, als…

Pineal gland and humidity effects on testicular function of the Indian palm squirrel, Funambulus pennanti.

The effect of two different conditions of humidity (80 +/- 5% and 40 +/- 5%) under stimulatory photoperiod (14L/10D) and high temperature (38 +/- 2 degrees C) was studied on the testes and accessory sex organs of the Indian palm squirrel, Funambulus pennanti, during the sexually active phase. High humidity (80 +/- 5%) reduced significantly the testes weight of the sham-operated animals as compared to the controls under natural environmental conditions but had no effect on that of pinealectomized animals. Moderate humidity (40 +/- 5%) did not affect the testes of sham-operated as well as pineal…

Environmental factors and annual harderian-pineal-gonadal interrelationship in Indian jungle bush quail, Perdicula asiatica.

A functional link between the Harderian and pineal glands has been suspected because they both are known to respond to changes in photoperiod. Further, the pineal gland is known to influence reproduction by secreting melatonin, and melatonin receptors have been detected in the Harderian gland. Hence, we conducted a study to investigate the annual changes in weight and secretory activity for the pineal gland, Harderian gland, and ovary in jungle bush quail (Perdicula asiatica), a bird indigenous to the tropics in India. Annual changes in weight for the three glands were found. In late May, when…

Interruption of nocturnal pineal melatonin synthesis in spontaneous recrudescent Djungarian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus).

The duration of nighttime synthesis of the pineal hormone melatonin is believed to determine the breeding season in many mammalian species. Hamsters exposed to short days undergo gonadal involution followed by a return to normal function, suggesting a developed insensitivity to regressive photoperiods. This recrudescence may be due to either exhaustion of the pineal or to target-desensitization. Both theories have been tested previously but failed to explain this phenomenon. We performed an experiment in the Djungarian hamster (Phodopus sungorus), a well-characterized photosensitive species wi…

Cellular and molecular mechanisms controlling melatonin release by mammalian pineal glands.

1. The pineal gland is regulated primarily by photoperiodic information attaining the organ through a multisynaptic pathway initiated in the retina and the retinohypothalamic tract. 2. Norepinephrine (NE) released from superior cervical ganglion (SCG) neurons that provide sympathetic innervation to the pineal acts through alpha1- and beta 1- adrenoceptors to stimulate melatonin synthesis and release. 3. The increase in cyclic AMP mediated by beta 1-adrenergic activation is potentiated by the increase in Ca2+ flux, inositol phospholipid turnover, and prostaglandin and leukotriene synthesis prod…

Relations between environment, migration and reproduction in a seed bug, Neacoryphus bicrucis (Say) (Heteroptera: Lygaeidae).

The seed feeding bug Neacoryphus bicrucis migrates by flight, often at great altitudes, and evidently is able to disperse over long distance … ty. Females also retain their flight potential when subjected to lack of mates or diapause-inducing photoperiodic conditions. Most males are able to fly throughout their adult lives under all conditions studied, but the tendency to fly is enhanced by lack of food or mates.

Lighting in the animal environment.

The effect of light upon the eyes of man and animals encompass such factors as wavelength, intensity, photoperiodicity and duration of exposure. Variations from "norm" of any one factor could be detrimental to ocular health, and variation from "norm" of more than one factor can further enhance development of ocular disease. Albino rats appear more susceptible to phototoxic retinal degeneration than other laboratory animals. This disease occurs under lighting conditions that are considered normal for man. Thus, this species may serve as a test model concerning adverse effects of laboratory anim…

Light exposure-induced circadian rhythm disruption impairs male reproductive health through oxidative stress and apoptosis.

AIMS: Artificial light exposure at night and irregular light schedules are increasingly prevalent environmental stressors in modern society and have been implicated in male reproductive disorders. This study aimed to determine how distinct patterns of circadian rhythm disruption differentially affect male reproductive function and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three groups of male rats were subjected to standard 12-h light/12-h dark cycles (LD), fixed inverted light-dark cycles (DL), and a dynamic alternating light-dark-dark-light cycle (LDDL) designed to indu
