Personal mastery, multisystem physiological dysregulation and risk of functional decline in older adults: A prospective study in Taiwan.

AIM: Personal mastery has been associated with physical function maintenance later in life. Less is known about the relationship between lack of personal mastery and functional decline in Asian populations, and whether multisystem physiological dysregulation explains this relationship. METHODS: Participants (n = 487) from the Social Environment and Biomarkers of Aging Study, a population-based prospective cohort study in Taiwan, received baseline measurements of personal mastery using the Pearlin Mastery Scale. Multisystem physiological dysregulation at baseline was assessed as a summary scor

Transient CD15-positive endothelial phenotype in the human placenta correlates with physiological and pathological fetoplacental immaturity.

OBJECTIVE: Placental growth and villous maturation are critical parameters of placental function at the end of pregnancy. A failure in these processes leads to the development of placental dysfunction, as well as fetal and neonatal mortality and morbidity. The aim of the study was to determine the relevant diagnostic markers associated with pathological placental development. STUDY DESIGN: Forty tissue samples from normal placentas of different gestational age and 68 pathological term placentas with defective villous maturation (GDM, idiopathic IUFD, preeclamsia, HELLP syndrome) comprised the

Atrioventricular node reentrant tachycardia in patients with a prolonged AH interval during sinus rhythm: clinical features, electrophysiologic characteristics and results of radiofrequency ablation.

Among a consecutive series of 600 patients who underwent radiofrequency catheter ablation for AV node reentrant tachycardia, 14 patients (age 29-76 years) had a prolonged AH interval during sinus rhythm (172 +/- 18 ms, range 140 to 200). Seven of them had unsuccessful ablation during the previous ablation sessions. Eight patients with anterograde dual AV node pathway physiology received anterograde slow pathway ablation, and the other 6 patients without dual-pathway physiology received retrograde fast pathway ablation. All patients had successful elimination of AV nodal reentrant tachycardia a

Effects of zinc oxide-eugenol and calcium hydroxide/ iodoform on delaying root resorption in primary molars without successors.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of zinc oxide-eugenol (ZOE) and calcium hydroxide/iodoform paste (Vitapex), as root canal filling materials in pulpectomy, on delaying the root resorption of primary molars without permanent successors. Animal models without permanent successors were surgically established in beagle dogs. Root resorption was observed via periapical radiographs. The onset of root resorption of primary mandibular molars without successors occurred later (p<0.05) than physiologic resorption. ZOE pulpectomy clearly delayed the root resorption of primary molars w

Physiologic effects of open and closed tracheostomy tubes on the pharyngeal swallow.

Studies linking aspiration and dysphagia to an open tracheostomy tube exemplify the possibility that the larynx may have an influence on oropharyngeal swallow function. Experiments addressing the effects of tracheostomy tube occlusion during the swallow have looked at the presence and severity of aspiration, but few have included measurements that capture the changes in swallowing physiology. Also, hypotheses for the importance of near-normal subglottic air pressure during the swallow have not been offered to date. As such, the aim of this study was to compare the depth of laryngeal penetratio

Differences of retinal nerve fiber layer thickness between normal and glaucoma-like optic disks (physiological cups) matched by optic disk area.

We matched by disk area size 23 eyes of patients with glaucoma-like disks (physiological cups) with normal ocular pressures and no visual field loss with 23 eyes of normal subjects. Using stereophotogrammetry we found a significant decrease in retinal nerve fiber layer thickness in the eyes with glaucoma-like disks compared to the normal eyes (P = 0.0081), especially in the nasal quadrant (18.1%). A similar significant decrease was noted in the neuroretinal rim area and a significant increase in cup volume, area, depth and slope for the total disk and its quadrants. The use of computerized ima

Comparison of the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test With a Physiologically Informed Cycle Test: Calgary Concussion Cycle Test.

BACKGROUND: Sport-related concussions are a complex injury requiring multifaceted assessment, including physical exertion. Currently, concussion testing relies primarily on a treadmill-based protocol for assessing exertion-related symptoms in persons after concussion. This study compared a modified cycle protocol (Calgary Concussion Cycle Test [CCCT]) with the clinically adopted standard, the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test (BCTT), across multiple physiological parameters. HYPOTHESIS: Treadmill and cycle matched workload protocols would produce similar results for cerebral blood velocity, m

Recursive Model Identification for the Evaluation of Baroreflex Sensitivity.

A method for the recursive identification of physiological models of the cardiovascular baroreflex is proposed and applied to the time-varying analysis of vagal and sympathetic activities. The proposed method was evaluated with data from five newborn lambs, which were acquired during injection of vasodilator and vasoconstrictors and the results show a close match between experimental and simulated signals. The model-based estimation of vagal and sympathetic contributions were consistent with physiological knowledge and the obtained estimators of vagal and sympathetic activities were compared t

Surface electromyographic characteristics of swallowing in dysphagia secondary to brainstem stroke.

Surface electromyography (SEMG) provides an noninvasive avenue for evaluating swallowing physiology. This report describes SEMG characteristics associated with swallow attempts in 6 dysphagic patients who had suffered brainstem stroke compared with 6 age and gender-matched controls. Results indicated that patients with dysphagia secondary to brainstem stroke differed in both amplitude and timing aspects of swallowing attempts from asymptomatic controls. Specifically, the results indicated that during swallow attempts, dysphagic patients produced more muscle activity over a shorter duration and

The physiological response of the detrusor muscle to experimental bladder outflow obstruction in the pig.

An animal model of bladder outflow obstruction in the pig was used to study the physiological response of the detrusor muscle to obstruction. Bladder muscle strips from obstructed pigs showed a significant increase in sensitivity to acetylcholine and other pharmacological agents compared with controls. In contrast, the response to intramural nerve stimulation was significantly reduced in obstruction, with both cholinergic and non-cholinergic neurotransmission being affected. These findings are consistent with partial denervation of the bladder as a result of obstruction, with the subsequent de

Molecular Mechanism of Microgravity-Induced Intestinal Flora Dysbiosis on the Abnormalities of Liver and Brain Metabolism.

Space flight has many adverse effects on the physiological functions of astronauts. Certain similarities have been observed in some physiological processes of rodents and astronauts in space, although there are also differences. These similarities make rodents helpful models for initial investigations into space-induced physiological changes. This study uses a 3D-Clinostat to simulate microgravity and explores the role of microgravity in space flight-induced liver and brain abnormalities by comparing changes in the gut microbiota, serum metabolites, and the function and physiological biochemis
