Pityriasis rosea after administration of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.

Pityriasis rosea (PR) is an acute papulosquamous cutaneous disorder that classically presents with a herald patch rapidly followed by a widespread rash along skin cleavage lines. Although the exact pathogenesis of PR is unknown, current evidence suggests that an inflammatory reaction due to a viral trigger may lead to the cutaneous manifestations. COVID-19 has been reported as one such viral trigger for PR. Previously, PR has been reported in temporal association with various viral inoculations. This article presents a case of PR in a 66-year-old black male 1 week after administration of the P…

Pityriasis rosea-like eruption associated with ondansetron use in pregnancy.

A 30-year-old pregnant female presented with a 2-week history of pityriasis rosea-like eruption. The rash started 2 days after the patient had started taking ondansetron 8 mg for alleviation of moderate-to-severe nausea and vomiting of pregnancy. Physical examination revealed erythematous papulosquamous lesions characterized by annular scaly margins and a dusky centre over the arms, chest, abdomen, lower back and legs. The rash did not involve the palms, sole or mucous membranes, and no lesions were observed on the lymph nodes. Ondansetron was discontinued. The rash ceased to spread and starte…

Differentiation of pityriasis rubra pilaris from plaque psoriasis by dermoscopy.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosing and differentiating pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) from other disorders can be a challenging task. Although histopathology remains the gold standard, it may not be feasible at times, especially in children. Being noninvasive, dermoscopy can be of great diagnostic importance in such a scenario. Dermoscopy overcomes the refractive properties of stratum corneum by interface medium or cross-polarization enabling easier visualization of lesions. OBJECTIVE: To study the dermoscopic features of PRP and compare them with dermoscopic features of psoriasis. PATIENTS AND METHODS:…

Pityriasis rubra pilaris: evolution of challenges in promising treatment options.

Pityriasis rubra pilaris is an uncommon inflammatory dermatosis that is well recognized across the globe. Erythroderma is a common presentation. A precise diagnosis of pityriasis rubra pilaris is based on morphologic features and is classified into 6 types: classic adult onset (type I), atypical adult (type II), classic juvenile (type III), circumscribed juvenile (type IV), atypical juvenile (type V), and human immunodeficiency virus-associated (type VI). Several conventional systemic and/or topical treatments are currently in use. Largely, their results are unsatisfactory and limited by long-…

Concurrence of lichen striatus and localised pityriasis rosea: Cutaneous mosaicism.

Cutaneous mosaicism has always been an intriguing subject. A 15-year-old boy presented to us with a unilateral band of lesions of pityriasis rosea and lichen striatus. The case is discussed in the light of the concept of genetic mosaicism.

Childhood Pityriasis rosea inversa without Herald Patch Mimicking Cutaneous Mastocytosis.

BACKGROUND: Pityriasis rosea is a self-limited inflammatory condition of the skin that mostly affects young adults. Several less common atypical presentations have been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: A 6-year old girl with red-brown maculopapular eruption sized 0, 5-1 cm in diameter localized on neck, trunk and popliteal region visited our general pediatric outpatient clinic. The eruption was wide spread especially on flexural areas. After consulting dermatologist skin biopsy was performed. According to clinical and histopathological findings as inverse (flexural) pityriasis rosea was diagnosed…

Pityriasis rubra pilaris type 1 spontaneously resolving after 20 years.

Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is an uncommon, idiopathic, papulosquamous eruption. We report a longitudinal study of a patient with PRP type 1 who was treated with retinoid therapy for 9 years and whose symptoms resolved spontaneously after 20 years. There are no data in the literature on the disease course of PRP type 1 persisting beyond the usual 3 years. This case highlights both the extreme chronicity of PRP and the possibility of remission after many years of active disease.

Juvenile pityriasis rubra pilaris: report of 28 cases in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is a papulosquamous dermatosis uncommon in juveniles. Large-scale studies are limited, especially from Asian countries. OBJECTIVE: We sought to analyze the clinical manifestations of juvenile PRP in Taiwanese patients and compare them with reported series in the literature. METHODS: The diagnosis of juvenile PRP was made based on clinical-histopathologic correlation. The therapeutic response and disease course were followed up by re-examination of the patients or by telephone. RESULTS: A total of 47 patients were identified, with histopathologic co…

Correlation between HLA and pityriasis rosea susceptibility in Brazilian blacks.

OBJECTIVES: The human leucocyte antigen (HLA) has been related to susceptibility factors in several diseases. This study aimed to determine the potential genetic susceptibility of patients with pityriasis rosea (PR) through HLA molecular typing analysis. METHODS: The method of choice was polymerase chain reaction with sequence-specific primers (PCR-SSP) using low-resolution typing kits, with determination of the alleles class I (HLA-A, HLA-B and HLA-C) and class II (HLA-DRB1, DRB3, DRB4, DRB5 and DQB1) performed in 30 Afro-Brazilian PR-diagnosed patients and 45 healthy individuals as the cont…

UVB therapy of pityriasis lichenoides--our experience with 29 patients.

BACKGROUND: Pityriasis lichenoides comprises a clinical and pathological spectrum of disorders. So far no highly effective treatment has been reported. Previous small studies have suggested that ultraviolet B (UVB) is a good alternative. METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of 29 pityriasis lichenoides patients treated in our institution with broad- or narrow-band UVB during the period 1996-2002. Twenty-one of these patients had one or more previous unsuccessful treatments. RESULTS: Complete response was achieved in 93.1% in both treatment groups, with 73% of them still relapse free aft…
