Plant male sterility (MS) is a fundamental model for studying reproductive development, yet a critical but often overlooked distinction exists between sporophytic male sterility (SMS) and gametophytic male sterility (GAMS). Unlike SMS, which is controlled by the sporophyte's genotype, GAMS is uniquely determined by the gametophyte's own genome, leading to subtle phenotypes that are challenging to identify. Here, we systematically classify 59 identified GAMS genes in Arabidopsis, rice, and maize into three functional categories based on their defective phenotypes during pollen development: Poll

Seasonal abundance, reproductive biology and feeding ecology of the bushveld gerbil Tatera leucogaster (Peters, 1852) were investigated in small-scale maize field-fallow land mosaics in south-western Tanzania. The gerbils were collected over a 2-year period using Sherman live and Victor hold-fast snap traps in permanent 4.5-ha grids. A total of 664 individuals were captured over 13 650 trap nights, giving an overall trap success rate of 4.9%. Trap success varied between seasons with and without crops in the field but not between habitat types. At this site, the breeding activity of this specie

The availability of a system for direct transfer of antifungal candidate genes into European chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) would offer an alternative approach to conventional breeding for production of chestnut trees tolerant to ink disease caused by Phytophthora spp. For the first time, a chestnut thaumatin-like protein gene (CsTL1), isolated from chestnut cotyledons, has been overexpressed in three chestnut somatic embryogenic lines. Transformation experiments have been performed using an Agrobacterium tumefaciens Smith and Townsend vector harboring the neomycin phosphotransferase (NPTII)

The TCP transcription factor family is a plant-specific group of regulators with well-documented roles in mediating abiotic stress responses. Licorice (Glycyrrhiza) is a high-value medicinal crop of global economic significance, predominantly cultivated in arid and semi-arid environments where saline soils constrain seed germination, impair seedling development, and diminish both rhizome biomass and the accumulation of pharmacologically active metabolites. Despite the agronomic importance of this genus, a systematic genome-wide survey of the TCP family and its contribution to salt tolerance in

Finland's efforts on engineering biology (synthetic biology) originate from the investments in genetic engineering at the beginning of 1980s. The efforts were linked early on with industry, such as dairy companies, vaccine production and production of ethanol and industrial enzymes, and development of commercial scale bioprocesses. Timely support for activities in metabolic engineering, systems biology and genome wide technologies (omics) and incorporating bioinformatics and cell level modelling evolved the field naturally towards synthetic biology and biofoundry activities. This foundation ha

Salinity is a major abiotic constraint on plant growth, productivity, and global food security. It disrupts cellular protein homeostasis (proteostasis) at every step, from synthesis to degradation. Plant survival under salt stress therefore depends on the coordinated regulation of protein synthesis, folding, post-translational modification, trafficking, quality control, and turnover. The individual contributions of the nucleus, ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum (ER), and Golgi apparatus to salinity responses are increasingly well described, but how these compartments communicate remains far les

Actinidia arguta possesses great commercial value as an economically important fruit crop, which accumulates abundant nutrients and bioactive components with medicinal potential. However, adverse abiotic environments, especially cold and drought stress, severely restrict its vegetative growth, reproductive development and fruit yield. Numerous studies have established MYB transcription factors as core regulators of plant abiotic stress adaptation. Here, we cloned AaMYB4 from A. arguta 'Fenglü' and systematically characterized its function in cold and drought tolerance. AaMYB4 encodes a 241-ami

Scald, caused by the fungus Rhynchosporium graminicola Heinsen 1897, is a major foliar disease in winter malting barley (Hordeum vulgare L). Resistance to scald in winter malting barley is controlled by major and minor resistance genes. We used a population of 377 lines derived from biparental crosses among five winter malting barley parents to analyze resistance to scald and associated agronomic traits. Increased winter survival and later heading dates were negatively correlated with increased resistance, whereas increased height was positively correlated with resistance. A genome-wide associ

Low-temperature stress restricts plant growth, development, and geographical distribution. The C-repeat binding factor (CBF) is a core transcriptional regulator in plant cold stress responses, but its role in the thermophilic "Manaohong" cherry (Cerasus pseudocerasus Lindl.) remains elusive. Here, a cold-induced transcription factor gene, CpCBF6, was isolated and characterized from this species. Phylogenetic analysis showed its protein shares the highest homology with orthologs from Prunus persica and Prunus dulcis in Rosaceae. CpCBF6 localized to the nucleus, and its transactivation function

A novel non-race-specific adult-plant resistance locus, QYr.cbl-5D, from spelt wheat confers near-immune resistance to stripe rust. The resistance conferred by QYr.cbl-5D is suppressed in bread wheat from an unknown suppressor. Adult-plant resistance (APR) genes provide durable, non-race-specific resistance against wheat rust diseases. We identified a novel APR locus in the spelt wheat cultivar CDC Silex that confers non-race-specific near-immune resistance to stripe rust. The trait segregates as a single dominant gene in the CDC Origin/CDC Silex spelt populations, and bulked segregant analysi

Sweet corn is a globally important dual-purpose crop for both food and fresh vegetables. The plant architecture and ear-related traits directly determine its yield potential and field ecological adaptability. To elucidate the genetic architecture of these traits and identify superior alleles for breeding, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) on 11 agronomic traits using 30,597 high-quality SNP markers in a panel of 101 elite sweet corn inbred lines. Population genetic structure was analyzed using sparse non-negative matrix factorization (sNMF) and discriminant analysis of princi

Members of the EPIDERMAL PATTERNING FACTOR (EPF) and EPF-Like (EPFL) families perform diverse regulatory functions in plant tissue morphogenesis, controlling the development of stomata, awns, shoot apical meristems (SAMs), and inflorescences. Nevertheless, the biological functions of OsEPF/EPFL family members in mediating responses to biotic/abiotic stresses are not yet widely characterized. Here, we demonstrated abundant cis-acting elements in the putative promoters of OsEPF/EPFL genes, including those associated with dehydration-, MeJA-, MYB binding site for drought, stress-, and ABA-respons

A dominant dwarfing gene, ds - 4 , encodes an Aux/IAA protein that negatively regulates plant stature through an auxin signaling pathway. Dwarfism is an important agronomic trait affecting yield in many crop species. The molecular mechanisms underlying dwarfism in oilseed rape (Brassica napus) are poorly understood, restricting the progress of breeding dwarf varieties in this species. Here, we identified and characterized a new dwarf locus, DS-4, in B. napus. Next-generation sequencing-assisted genetic mapping and candidate gene analysis found that DS-4 encodes a nucleus-targeted auxin/indole-

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) is a revolutionary advancement allowing large-scale discovery of functional molecular markers that has many applications, including plant breeding. High-quality genomic DNA (gDNA) is a prerequisite for successful NGS library preparation and sequencing; however, few reliable protocols to obtain such plant gDNA exist. A previously reported nuclear pellet (NP) method enables extraction of high-yielding gDNA from fresh leaf tissue of maize (Zea mays L.), but the quality does not meet the stringent requirements of NGS. In this study, we optimized the NP method for w…

Current climate change models predict an increased frequency and intensity of drought for much of the developing world within the next 30 years. These events will negatively affect maize yields, potentially leading to economic and social instability in many smallholder farming communities. Knowledge about the genetic resources available for traits related to drought tolerance has great importance in developing breeding program strategies. The aim of this research was to study a maize landrace introgression panel to identify chromosomal regions associated with a drought tolerance index. For tha

BACKGROUND: A promising strategy to optimize biological control of insect pests is selecting crop varieties with indirect defense traits. Indirect plant defenses recruit natural enemies to kill pests and include chemical attractants like herbivore-induced plant volatiles. In prior laboratory assays, we found sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) cultivar ATx3409/RTx436 infested with sorghum aphid (Melanaphis sorghi Theobald) was attractive to natural enemies and emitted more chemical attractants than two other cultivars. In this field study, we manually infested 9-week-old sorghum plants with aphids an

Haplotype-based nested association mapping conducted in Australian barley identified 30 haploblocks for resistance/susceptibility to net form of net blotch. Stacking multiple resistance haplotypes significantly reduced disease severity. Net form net blotch (NFNB), caused by Pyrenophora teres f. teres, is a major fungal disease affecting barley, leading to significant yield losses globally. Improving the sustainability of barley production requires identifying genetic sources that confer effective resistance across genetic backgrounds and diverse environments. Considerable progress has been mad
