Accuracy of the Interpolated Surface Mesh Method for OEP Volume Measurement.

Background: Optoelectronic plethysmography (OEP) is a non-invasive technique that can be used to assess both respiratory volumes and chest wall kinematics. An interpolation surface method (ISM) has been recently developed to enhance OEP kinematic analysis. The aim of this study was to test whether ISM is as accurate as the conventional method (CM) for volume measurement when compared with conventional spirometry. Methods: Pneumotachographs and OEP were recorded simultaneously on a healthy subject who performed quiet and deep breathing. Results: In total, 124 tidal volumes (TV) and 50 vital cap…

Targeting Astrogliosis in the Retrotrapezoid Nucleus: A Novel Approach to Ameliorate Respiratory Dysfunction and Alzheimer's Pathology in Mice.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), a leading cause of dementia, is associated with significant respiratory dysfunctions. Our study explores the role of astrogliosis in the brainstem retrotrapezoid nucleus (RTN), a key breathing regulatory center, and its impact on breathing control and AD pathology in mice. Using Tg-2576 AD and wild-type mice, we investigated the effect of silencing the transforming growth factor-beta receptor II (TGFβR II) in the RTN. We performed behavioral tests, including the Barnes maze and novel object recognition test, along with whole-body plethysmography to assess breathing di…

High flow nasal cannula improves breathing efficiency and ventilatory ratio in COPD patients recovering from an exacerbation.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY PURPOSE: High flow nasal cannula (HFNC) may improve CO2 elimination by washing out CO2 from the upper airways. This study aimed at assessing the effect of HFNC on minute ventilation and ventilatory ratio (VR), a surrogate of dead space, in patients hospitalized for acute hypercapnic COPD exacerbation. METHODS: Physiological study comparing HFNC at 40 L/min to low flow oxygen. Variations of tidal volume (VT) and minute ventilation between the two treatments were estimated from chest plethysmography. Respiratory rate (RR) and arterial blood gases were measured. Variations i…

Antagonism of progesterone receptor suppresses carotid body responses to hypoxia and nicotine in rat pups.

We tested the hypothesis that antagonism of progesterone receptor (PR) in newborn rats alters carotid body and respiratory responses to hypoxia and nicotinic receptor agonists. Rats were treated with the PR antagonist mifepristone (daily oral gavage 40 μg/g/d) or vehicle between postnatal days 3 and 15. In 11-14-day-old rats, we used in vitro carotid body/carotid sinus nerve preparation and whole body plethysmography to assess the carotid body and ventilatory responses to hypoxia (65 mmHg in vitro, 10% O2 in vivo) and to nicotinic receptor agonists (as an excitatory modulator of carotid body a…

A failure of adaptive servo-ventilation to correct central apneas in Cheyne-Stokes breathing.

An 80-year-old man with severe central sleep apnea due to Cheyne-Stokes breathing (AHI 41.2) caused by severe cardiac failure underwent a trial of adaptive servo-ventilation (ASV) by full face mask after failure of a fixed CPAP trial. Recommended procedure was closely followed and the ASV device activated normally during central apneas. Initial settings were EEP 5, PSmin 3, PSmax 15 on room air. The device did not capture the thorax or abdomen, as shown by lack of change in respiratory inductive plethysmography, despite expected mask pressure waveforms. Snoring was also detected during apneas …
