Effect and interaction of PINK1 genetic polymorphisms and environmental factors on blood pressure in COEs-exposed workers.

Coke oven emissions (COEs) contain a variety of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which can cause damage to the human cardiovascular system. In addition, myocardial mitochondria are susceptible to damage in hypertensive patients. However, it is not clear whether genetic variation, in single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in PINK1 affects COEs exposure-induced abnormal blood pressure. We surveyed and tested 518 workers exposed to COEs and statistically analyzed them with SPSS 21.0 software. SBP was greater in the high-exposure group than in the low-exposure group. Generalized linear mod

Association of NLRP3 and IL-4 VNTR polymorphisms and genetic susceptibility to preeclampsia: A case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: Abnormalities in the maternal immune system and insufficient gestational immune tolerance may significantly contribute to the development of preeclampsia (PE). The NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) functions as a pattern recognition receptor that identifies pathogen-associated molecular patterns. Interleukin-4 (IL-4) is a potent anti-inflammatory cytokine that modulates the immune response. Therefore, this study aims to elucidate the impact of NLRP3 and IL-4 variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) polymorphisms on susceptibility to PE. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total

Single-Nucleotide Polymorphisms in Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura: A Genetic Predisposition to Immune Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura.

There are two main classifications for thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP): immune and hereditary. The majority of TTP cases are immune in nature and are due to inhibitor autoantibodies against ADAMTS13. Hereditary TTP is caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in the ADAMTS13 gene. Immune TTP is treated with therapeutic plasma exchange that both removes inhibitor autoantibodies and repletes deficient ADAMTS13. In hereditary TTP, the treatment is plasma infusion, as there are no inhibitor autoantibodies to remove. Our case report presents a 72-year-old male who experienced recurrent epis

Serotonin Receptor Gene Polymorphisms Are Associated with Cerebrospinal Fluid, Genetic, and Neuropsychological Biomarkers of Alzheimer's Disease.

A decrease in serotonergic transmission throughout the brain is among the earliest pathological changes in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Serotonergic receptors are also affected in AD. Polymorphisms in genes of serotonin (5HT) receptors have been mostly associated with behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). In this study, we examined if AD patients carrying different genotypes in 5HTR1B rs13212041, 5HTR2A rs6313 (T102C), 5HTR2C rs3813929 (-759C/T), and 5HTR6 rs1805054 (C267T) polymorphisms have a higher risk of faster disease progression (assessed by neuropsychological testing),

The methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase C677T and A1298C genetic polymorphisms and plasma homocysteine in Alzheimer's disease in an Algerian population.

BACKGROUND: The etiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is multifactorial. The most important challenge of research is the identification of potential biomarkers associated with AD pathogenesis that may significantly contribute to early diagnosis of the disease. We aim to explore an eventual association of the C677T and A1298C genetic polymorphisms in the MTHFR gene with AD risk in an Algerian population. METHODS: This case-control study involved comparing a group of 106 patients that had developed AD to another group of 104 non-demented individuals. The MTHFR genotypes were determined using PCR

Insights into S-adenosyl-l-methionine (SAM)-dependent methyltransferase related diseases and genetic polymorphisms.

Enzymatic methylation catalyzed by methyltransferases has a significant impact on many human biochemical reactions. As the second most ubiquitous cofactor in humans, S-adenosyl-l-methionine (SAM or AdoMet) serves as a methyl donor for SAM-dependent methyltransferases (MTases), which transfer a methyl group to a nucleophilic acceptor such as O, As, N, S, or C as the byproduct. SAM-dependent methyltransferases can be grouped into different types based on the substrates. Here we systematically reviewed eight types of methyltransferases associated with human diseases. Catechol O-methyltransferase
