Recovery among sexual minorities in the united states population: Prevalence, characteristics, quality of life and functioning compared with heterosexual majority.

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals ("sexual minorities" [SMs]) are overrepresented among individuals suffering from alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems. However, little is known regarding differences, particularly in functioning and well-being, between SMs and heterosexuals in recovery from AOD problems. METHOD: Cross-sectional, nationally representative sample of US adults who resolved an AOD problem (N = 2002; National Recovery Study [Kelly et al., 2017]). Univariate analyses tested for differences between SMs and heterosexuals on socio-demographic, AOD use/treatment and c

Variant histology in nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin lymphoma in an adult population: disease investigations and characteristics from a retrospective cohort.

A subset of variant histological patterns of nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin lymphoma (NLPHL) has been associated with advanced disease stage and increased recurrence risk. Histopathology reports on core needle (CNB) and/or surgical excision biopsies (SEB) for 33 adult patients with NLPHL were examined for variant histology prevalence and association with disease stage and clinical outcome. Variant histological pattern was present in 13/33 patients (39%). Obtained tissue was inadequate for diagnosis in 1/23 (4.3%) cases of CNB. Variant histology was associated with stage IV disease at p

Breast Cancer Characteristics in the Population of Survivors Participating in the World Trade Center Environmental Health Center Program 2002-2019.

The destruction of World Trade Center on 11 September 2001 exposed local community members to a complex mixture of known carcinogens and potentially carcinogenic substances. To date, breast cancer has not been characterized in detail in the WTC-exposed civilian populations. The cancer characteristics of breast cancer patients were derived from the newly developed Pan-Cancer Database at the WTC Environmental Health Center (WTC EHC). We used the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program breast cancer data as a reference source. Between May 2002 and 31 December 2019, 2840 persons

Patient characteristics, treatment patterns, and outcomes of Rickettsial diseases among a commercially insured population in the United States, 2005-2017.

Rickettsial diseases (RDs) are transmitted to humans by ectoparasites, including ticks and fleas. Symptoms range from mild febrile illness, to severe disease or death. Doxycycline is the treatment of choice for patients of all ages; early treatment based on clinical diagnosis is critical to prevent severe outcomes. We conducted a descriptive analysis using insurance claims data captured by IBM MarketScan® research databases to describe demographics, treatment patterns, and outcomes of patients diagnosed with RDs in the United States during 2005-2017. Overall, 14,830 patients had a RD diagnosis

Reproductive characteristics modify the association between global DNA methylation and breast cancer risk in a population-based sample of women.

DNA methylation has been implicated in breast cancer aetiology, but little is known about whether reproductive history and DNA methylation interact to influence carcinogenesis. This study examined modification of the association between global DNA methylation and breast cancer risk by reproductive characteristics. A population-based case-control study assessed reproductive history in an interviewer-administered questionnaire. Global DNA methylation was measured from white blood cell DNA using luminometric methylation assay (LUMA) and pyrosequencing assay (long interspersed elements-1 (LINE-1).

Participant characteristics that influence consent for genetic research in a population-based survey: the Baltimore epidemiologic catchment area follow-up.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to investigate the sociodemographic and health characteristics associated with the willingness to donate a DNA sample, and consent to testing and long-term storage of that sample, among participants in a longitudinal community-based survey. SAMPLE: Eighty-three percent of the 1,071 participants interviewed in 2004/5 agreed to donate a biological specimen (blood or buccal). RESULTS: Age was consistently inversely associated with the willingness to allow genetic testing (OR 0.97; p < 0.05), but was unrelated to the willingness to donate or allow storage

Comparison of craniofacial skeletal characteristics of infants with bilateral choanal atresia and an age-matched normative population: computed tomography analysis.

Choanal atresia (CA) results from the developmental failure of the posterior nasal cavity to communicate with the nasopharynx. Computed tomographic (CT) scanning is often used as a diagnostic tool for CA as it is able to provide information regarding the extent and type of atresia. Studies have used CT measurements to analyze the skeletal deformities of children with CA. Computed tomographic analysis of the complete craniofacial skeletal characteristics of children with CA has not been previously reported. This study analyzed the craniofacial skeletal characteristics of infants with bilateral
