Testing the Efficacy of 2 Interventions to Improve Health Outcomes and Quality of Life Among Rural Older Adults Living With HIV: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Rural people living with HIV in the United States have higher mortality rates and lower rates of HIV suppression compared to nonrural people living with HIV. In addition, compared to younger people living with HIV, older people living with HIV face numerous challenges to maintaining health and well-being. However, few interventions have targeted health or quality-of-life outcomes in rural older people living with HIV. OBJECTIVE: This randomized controlled trial will evaluate the efficacy of 2 remotely delivered interventions-supportive-expressive peer social support groups and str

Perceptions of Diseases of Despair by Members of Rural and Urban High-Prevalence Communities: A Qualitative Study.

IMPORTANCE: Diseases of despair (ie, mortality or morbidity from suicidality, drug abuse, and alcoholism) were first characterized as increasing in rural White working-class populations in midlife with low educational attainment and associated with long-term economic decline. Excess mortality now appears to be associated with working-class citizens across demographic and geographic boundaries, but no known qualitative studies have engaged residents of rural and urban locales with high prevalence of diseases of despair to learn their perspectives. OBJECTIVE: To explore perceptions about despai

HLA-A, HLA-B, and HLA-DRB1 allele distribution in a large Armenian population sample.

Human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-A, HLA-B, and HLA-DRB1 gene frequencies were investigated in 4279 unrelated Armenian bone marrow donors. HLA alleles were defined by using PCR amplification with sequence specific primers (PCR-SSP) high- and low-resolution kits. The aim of this study was to examine the HLA diversity at the high-resolution level in a large Armenian population sample, and to compare HLA allele group distribution in Armenian subpopulations. The most frequently observed alleles in the HLA class I were HLA-A*0201, A*0101, A*2402, A*0301, HLA-B*5101, HLA-B*3501, and B*4901. Among DRB1 a

Growth status of indigenous school children 6-14 years in the Tarahumara Sierra, Northern Mexico, in 1990 and 2007.

AIMS: The study evaluated the growth status and secular change in body size of indigenous Tarahumara children in northern Mexico. METHODS: Heights and weights of Tarahumara children 6-14 years were measured in 1990 (n = 601) and 2007 (n = 583); the BMI was calculated. International criteria defined weight status while United States reference data defined stunting. RESULTS: Estimated secular gains in height from 1990 to 2007 were greatest in 6-7 year-old boys and declined with age to a small, non-significant secular decline in boys 12-14 years. Among girls secular gains in height were similar

Arbovirus surveillance in Italy.

A high number of different arboviruses have been demonstrated to be present in Italy, due to the coexistence of climates that are characteristic of continental areas in the North of the country and of subtropical areas in the South. Viruses circulating in Central Europe, such as the Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE) virus, are present in Central and Northern Regions, whereas viruses circulating in Mediterranean areas, such as the Sandfly fever viruses are present in Central and Southern Italy. Viruses have been isolated from mosquitoes, ticks, sandflies and vertebrates (birds, rodents, humans). Fo

Interest-holder priorities for health surveillance of people incarcerated in Canada: A qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: As a core function of public health, health surveillance for people who are incarcerated could address gaps in knowledge regarding their health status. The views of people who could use these data and who are included in health surveillance data should inform health surveillance. In this study, we aimed to identify the priorities of interest-holders for health surveillance of people incarcerated in Canadian correctional facilities. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted an overall qualitative descriptive study with an embedded reflexive thematic analysis and a qualitative content analysis. M

Supporting Older, Frail, and Vulnerable Adult Prisoners Through Peer Care: Observations, Reflections, and Recommendations Based on a UK/U.S. Researcher Exchange Visit.

This article describes key findings from a UK/U.S. prison health researcher exchange in September 2023. The aims were to increase familiarity with the research context and to observe the roles of peer caregivers in U.S. prison settings. The researchers identified several differences and similarities in peer caregiving between UK and U.S. sites and detail six recommendations related to policy and practice concerning both sides of the Atlantic. It is believed that the adoption of such recommendations will contribute to improved care and, thereby, the health and well-being of vulnerable people in

The Effect of Peer-Mentor Support for Older Vulnerable Patients With Ischemic Heart Disease-A 24-Week Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: The positive effects of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) are well established; however, among older and vulnerable patients, nonattendance and dropout are prevalent problems. AIM: The objective of this study is to explore if a 24-week peer-mentor intervention increases initial and long-term CR attendance. Secondary aims are whether peer-mentor intervention improves lifestyle (diet and physical activity) and psychological outcomes (self-efficacy, anxiety, depression, and quality of life) among older vulnerable patients with ischemic heart disease. METHODS: The study was designed as a 2

"We're Going to Start Healing": Perceptions of Sexual Violence on a Rural Indian Reservation in the Northern Great Plains.

Indigenous people experience disproportionally higher rates of sexual violence, but we know little about how to prevent sexual violence among this population. The purpose of this study was to understand the perspectives (e.g., causes, prevention) of sexual violence among an Indigenous community residing on a large rural Indian Reservation in the Northern Great Plains. The study conducted seven focus groups with adults, high school students, and middle school students, and a thematic analysis approach was used to assess the gestalt of the data. Three primary themes emerged from the data: (a) ca

Sekuwe (My House): building health equity through Dene First Nations housing designs.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada determined that the Dene people, among other Indigenous groups, experienced cultural genocide through policies that separated them from their lands and resources, and from their families, languages, cultures, and by forcibly sending children to Indian Residential Schools. The resultant social inequity is manifested in conditions of social injustice including inadequate housing. The Dene healthy housing research was a continuing partnership between the two Dene First Nation communities, the university and a provincial First Nation non-government

Racial Disparities in Treatment Rates for Chronic Hepatitis C: Analysis of a Population-Based Cohort of 73,665 Patients in the United States.

Chronic hepatitis C (CHC) disproportionately affects racial minorities in the United States (US). Although prior studies have reported lower treatment rates in Blacks than in Caucasians, the rates of other minorities remain understudied. We aimed to examine antiviral treatment rates by race and to evaluate the effect of other demographic, medical, and psychiatric factors on treatment rates. We performed a population-based study of adult CHC patients identified via ICD-9CM query from OptumInsight's Data Mart from January 2009 to December 2013. Antiviral treatment was defined by pharmaceutical c
