A study on the correlation of thyroid nodules with METS-IR and SII in a population undergoing health checkups.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the associations between thyroid nodules and two emerging biomarkers-Metabolic Score for Insulin Resistance (METS-IR) and Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index (SII)-in adults undergoing routine health checkups. METHODS: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, we analyzed data from 49,835 adults (65.50% male, 34.50% female) who underwent health checkups in 2023. Thyroid nodules were classified using the Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (TI-RADS) categories (2, 3, ≥4). Statistical analyses, including chi-square tests and multiple logistic regression, were u

The Health for Life in Singapore (HELIOS) Study: delivering precision medicine research for Asian populations.

Asian people are under-represented in population-based, clinical, and genomic research. To address this gap, we have initiated the Health for Life in Singapore (HELIOS) longitudinal cohort study, comprising comprehensive behavioural, phenotypic, and genomic measurements from 10,004 Asian men and women of Chinese, Indian or Malay background. Phenotyping has been carried out using validated approaches, that are internationally interoperable. Health record linkage enriches both baseline phenotyping and evaluation of prospective outcomes. The integrated multi-omics data include whole-genome and RN

Exposing the loci of bias: a taxonomical exploration of sources of bias in population mental health research.

All studies are inherently biased, but some are more biased than others. This variation on a key theme from George Orwell's Animal Farm underscores a significant issue in public health. Ultimately, optimizing public health begins with understanding population health-particularly when assessing the impact of specific health risks that are often intertwined with both benign and malign health determinants. The objective of this contribution is to provide an overview of sources of bias in epidemiological research, drawing inspiration from the work of Rudolph Agricola-Northern Europe's first humani…

The Clustering of Lifestyle Risk Factors in the Serbian Adult Population and Association with Self-Rated Health.

INTRODUCTION: Our objective was to identify clusters of lifestyle risk factors among Serbian adults and assess associations with socio-demographic characteristics and self-rated health. METHODS: The sample included 7,885 adults aged 18 and over from the 2019 Serbian National Health Survey, who provided information on all four lifestyle risk factors (smoking, physical inactivity, low fruit and vegetable intake and risky drinking). The Two-Step Cluster Analysis was used to identify different health-related lifestyle clusters. Logistic regression models were used to assess the association of obt

Association of social determinants of health and their cumulative inequities with risk of hypertension: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension remains a global public health challenge with significant socioeconomic disparities. While traditional risk factors are well-documented, the cumulative impact of adverse social determinants of health (SDoH) on hypertension risk warrants further investigation. METHODS: We analyzed data from 36,836 NHANES participants (2005-2018), including 15,082 hypertension cases. Eight SDoH indicators across five domains (economic stability, education, healthcare access, neighborhood environment, and social context) were evaluated using survey-weighted multivariable logistic regress

Using Social Media to Engage and Enroll Underrepresented Populations: Longitudinal Digital Health Research.

BACKGROUND: Emerging digital health research poses roadblocks to the inclusion of historically marginalized populations in research. Exclusion of underresourced communities in digital health research is a result of multiple factors (eg, limited technology access, decreased digital literacy, language barriers, and historical mistrust of research and research institutions). Alternative methods of access and engagement may aid in achieving long-term sustainability of diversified participation in digital health research, ensuring that developed technologies and research outcomes are effective and

Cardiovascular disease and absenteeism in Dutch occupational health: a retrospective study in a regular working population.

BACKGROUND: There is very limited data available on the impact of cardiovascular disease (CVD) on absenteeism occurrence, absenteeism duration, and the associated rough cost-estimate for employers. METHODS: We extracted routinely collected absenteeism data for the years 2019-2022 from a database maintained by two large, nationally operating occupational health services (n = 443,740). All diagnoses and included sickness cases were recorded > 6 weeks of absenteeism. Descriptive statistics, including median values (IQR) and percentages, were calculated and compared using the Mann-Whitney U test

A prediction model for estimating NT-proBNP in a general Japanese population: the Toon Health Study.

AIMS: As part of the Toon Health Study, which is an ongoing population-based cohort study, we aimed to develop a prediction model for N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) in a general Japanese population. We sought to explore the influence of various demographic and clinical factors on NT-proBNP levels and assess the model's performance. In addition, our objectives included internal validation and investigation of the diagnostic potential of the observed-to-predicted NT-proBNP ratio (OPR) at baseline for predicting the risk of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFp

Predictors and health outcomes of tobacco smoking among the population of Gaza: A large-scale study.

Tobacco smoking, a significant public health concern globally, is associated with a rise in noncommunicable diseases and preventable deaths, with pronounced impacts in conflict zones like Gaza. A study in Gaza focused on individuals over 40 years of age, aiming to identify predictors of tobacco use and its links to diseases like coronary artery disease, chronic lung disease, and stroke. The research, based on the Gaza NCD study data with 4576 participants and a 96.6% response rate, found an overall tobacco smoking prevalence of 19.4%, with higher rates among men. Adjusting for various factors,

Differences in reproductive health discussions in an urban Hispanic population with SLE: lessons from the field.

OBJECTIVE: Management of reproductive health-related issues is crucial for patients with SLE, given this is a disease that primarily affects women of childbearing age. Little is known as to how the 2020 American College of Rheumatology (ACR) Reproductive Health in Rheumatic Disease Guideline is experienced by an underserved, primarily Hispanic population and their physicians as it relates to pregnancy planning and contraception conversations. Given this population experiences high rates of unplanned pregnancies and worse SLE outcomes compared with the non-Hispanic white population, it is cruci
