Inspired by the cocktail effect to prepare porous carbon with high removal performance: the critical role of sp3-C and CO in adsorption and degradation on porous carbon.

Identifying the active sites for adsorption and degradation of pollutants in porous carbon is crucial for the porous carbon/persulfate (PDS) decontamination system, yet the identified active sites remain controversial. To address this issue, a porous carbon with both high adsorption capacity and efficient electron transfer (or sp2 C content) is first required, but both are mutually limited. Herein, a series of porous carbons (TPS34C-Y) was effectively prepared using a simple process that involved varying the gas atmosphere (i.e., N2, CO2, air, and steam) during the activation of the pine sawdu

Impact of microwave-induced thermal shock on the structural evolution of biomass-derived porous carbon and the resulting promising electrochemical performance.

The compact lignocellulosic architecture of biomass severely restricts the diffusion of KOH into the precursor matrix, resulting in inefficient activation, excessive chemical consumption, and prolonged energy-intensive thermal treatment. Although microwave-assisted carbonization can accelerate biomass conversion, conventional multimode microwave systems often suffer from non-uniform electromagnetic field distribution, which limits controllable pore development. Herein, a single-mode Microwave-Induced Thermal Shock activation strategy, based on an IR-recorded rapid apparent heating response, wa

Dual-site magnetic microporous organic networks enabling high-performance capture and quantification of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances.

Given the global prevalence of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), notable for their environmental persistence, bioaccumulation potential, and toxicity, in consumer products, water sources, and living organisms, the development of robust analytical techniques for their accurate quantification in complex matrices is imperative. Here, a novel quaternary ammonium-fluorinated dual-site magnetic microporous organic network (QM-MFMON) is developed for efficiently capturing PFASs. The cooperative integration of electrostatic interaction and fluorous affinity within QM-MFMON facilitates high

The hydrogen puzzle in rock-enhanced biochar: Pyrogenic coating, mineral redox and pore accessibility.

Rock-enhanced (RE-)biochars, produced by co-pyrolysis of silicate rock powder with biomass, were proposed to combine pyrogenic carbon capture and storage (PyCCS) with enhanced rock weathering (ERW) as complementary carbon dioxide removal approaches. Catalytic effects of rock-derived AAEM on pyrolysis and carbon speciation were anticipated. Here we produced six RE-biochars (10-90% rock content) by co-pyrolysis of basanite rock powder with wood at contrasting highest treatment temperatures of 450 °C and 750 °C. To provide an in-depth physico-chemical characterization of the RE-biochars, focusing

Bio-based foams with low density and thermal conductivity through ethyl cellulose and SiO2 stabilized Pickering emulsion templating.

Plastic pollution represents a pressing environmental issue, with conventional plastic foams exacerbating visual pollution, soil contamination, and the accumulation of microplastics. This study focused on the preparation of fully bio-based foams as a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based counterparts using the emulsion templating method (ETM), employing 4 wt% ethyl cellulose (EC) and 0.6 wt% silicon dioxide (SiO2) to stabilize water-in-oil (W/O) Pickering emulsions. The curing conditions were optimized through orthogonal experiments, revealing that the optimal parameters included curing a

Investigating the effects of soil microstructures on bacterial growth via microfluidic channels and an agent-based model.

Soil is a suitable habitat for various microorganisms. These soil microorganisms establish complex social relationships and build biogeochemical cycles, such as carbon or nitrogen cycles, which synthesize plant nutrients and greenhouse gases. Clarifying microbial activities inside the soil is essential for agricultural and environmental fields. One of critical factors influencing bacterial activity in soil is the physical structure of the soil built by soil aggregates. The size distribution of soil aggregates widely ranges from µm to mm and creates pores with various sizes that act as pathways

Directional Pore Size-Mediated Blood Hydrodynamics Govern Hemostasis in Cellulose Sponges.

Uncontrolled bleeding remains a major clinical challenge in trauma and surgical care, requiring hemostatic materials that combine rapid blood absorption with efficient clot formation. However, the interplay between fluid dynamics and coagulation within porous architectures is still underexplored. Herein, a cellulose-based hemostatic sponge featuring directionally aligned channels with tunable pore sizes is reported, enabling precise modulation of blood hydrodynamics at the wound interface. By integrating in vitro coagulation assays and in vivo hemostasis models, we reveal a strong dependence o

Enhanced aromatics production from cassava residue pyrolysis via optimizing zeolite configuration.

This study presents a novel lanthanum-modified hollow hierarchical ZSM-5 for the highly selective pyrolysis of cassava residue (CR) into value-added aromatics. The optimized 0.5LaH catalyst gives a unique hollow architecture with interconnected micro-meso-macro pores and abundant Brønsted acid sites via selective desilication and La3+-induced hydroxyl polarization, thereby greatly contributing to the mass transfer and selective pyrolysis. Remarkably, hierarchical porosity facilitates the diffusion of molecules with larger kinetic diameters, increasing the effective diffusion coefficients of fu…

Hypothermia treatment for ocular ischemia: A multiphase porous thermal model of human eye.

Localized therapeutic hypothermia is a cooling technique to reduce eye temperature to prevent neuron loss under ischemic conditions. The treatment is a non-invasive intervention technique that aids recovery and may reduce vision loss in ocular ischemia patients. The paper presents a thermal analysis simulation to predict the temperature change in the human eye under local hypothermia treatment using a scleral contact cooling ring device. A thermoregulating blood flow model is introduced to simulate realistic blood circulation in the eye using a three-phase porous media that includes tissue, in

Internal flow field analysis of a dendritic pore scaffold for bone tissue engineering.

The effective reconstruction of osteochondral biomimetic structures is a key factor in guiding the regeneration of full-thickness osteochondral defects. Due to the avascular nature of hyaline cartilage, the greatest challenge in constructing this scaffold lies in both utilizing the biomimetic structure to promote vascular differentiation for nutrient delivery to hyaline cartilage, thereby enhancing the efficiency of osteochondral reconstruction, and effectively blocking vascular ingrowth into the cartilage layer to prevent cartilage mineralization. However, the intrinsic relationship between t

Measurement of enzyme activity of insoluble substrates based on ordered porous layer interferometry and the application in evaluation of thrombolytic drugs.

The development of innovative methods for real-time surveillance of enzymatic activity determination processes is essential, particularly for insoluble substrate enzymatic assessments. In this work, a novel method for enzymatic activity determination was devised by assembling a 190 nm silica colloidal crystal (SCC) film onto a glass slide, coupled with Ordered Porous Layer Interferometry (OPLI) technology. By fixing the substrate of the enzyme on the surface of the silica sphere, a solid-liquid interface can be formed for monitoring enzymatic activity. The enzymatic activity is gauged by the c

Preparation of Hierarchical Porous Monoliths With High Surface Areas by a Solvent Knitting Strategy.

Hierarchical porous hypercrosslinked monoliths (PolyHIPE-HCP) with ultrahigh specific surface areas are prepared via a solvent knitting strategy. Compared to previous work, the solvent knitting strategy is carried out in a relatively low air-controlled atmosphere with gradient heating starting from low temperature while using DCM (Dichloromethane) as both a solvent and a cross-linker, allowing for a slow and controlled cross-linking process, thereby achieving a BET surface area ranging from 514 to 728 m2 g-1. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows that the knitting process does not affect th

Bamboo-Inspired Porous Scaffolds for Advanced Orthopedic Implants: Design, Mechanical Properties, and Fluid Characteristics.

In orthopedic implant development, incorporating a porous structure into implants can reduce the elastic modulus to prevent stress shielding but may compromise yield strength, risking prosthesis fracture. Bamboo's natural structure, with its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, serves as inspiration. This study explores biomimicry using bamboo-inspired porous scaffolds (BISs) resembling cortical bone, assessing their mechanical properties and fluid characteristics. The BIS consists of two 2D units controlled by structural parameters α and β. The mechanical properties, failure mechanisms, ener

Effect of Internal Mechanical Environment of Porous Scaffolds on Mechano-driven Bone Ingrowth: A Numerical Study.

Porous cages with lower global stiffness induce more bone ingrowth and enhance bone-implant anchorage. However, it's dangerous for spinal fusion cages, which usually act as stabilizers, to sacrifice global stiffness for bone ingrowth. Intentional design on internal mechanical environment might be a promising approach to promote osseointegration without undermining global stiffness excessively. In this study, three porous cages with different architectures were designed to provide distinct internal mechanical environments for bone remodeling during spinal fusion process. A design space optimiza

Computational simulation of the flow dynamic field in a porous ureteric stent.

Ureteric stents are employed clinically to manage urinary obstructions or other pathological conditions. Stents made of porous and biodegradable materials have gained increasing interest, because of their excellent biocompatibility and the potential for overcoming the so-called 'forgotten stent syndrome'. However, there is very limited characterisation of their flow dynamic performance. In this study, a CFD model of the occluded and unoccluded urinary tract was developed to investigate the urinary flow dynamics in the presence of a porous ureteric stent. With increasing the permeability of the
