Nutrient removal and recovery has received less attention during the development of bioelectrochemical systems (BES) for energy efficient wastewater treatment, but it is a critical issue for sustainable wastewater treatment. Both nitrogen and phosphorus can be removed and/or recovered in a BES through involving biological processes such as nitrification and bioelectrochemical denitrification, the NH4(+)/NH3 couple affected by the electrolyte pH, or precipitating phosphorus compounds in the high-pH zone adjacent a cathode electrode. This paper has reviewed the nutrients removal and recovery in

Acute basilar artery occlusion (ABAO) is an infrequent but potentially fatal complication that can cause strokes in both adults and children. Traumatic vertebral artery dissection (VAD) is one of the most common causes of ABAO in young patients. We present a case of an 11-year-old boy with VAD complicated by basilar artery occlusion 2 days after a fight with classmates that caused severe neurological deficits. He did not have any direct head trauma or concomitant risk factors. Clinical symptoms included nausea, vomiting, and rapid alteration of consciousness. Magnetic resonance imaging showed

Acne keloidalis nuchae is an idiopathic, scarring folliculitis characterized by the formation of papules and pustules that may ultimately develop into tumor-like masses distributed on the nape of the neck and occipital region of the scalp. This hyperproliferative disorder is most commonly seen in African-American men. While the pathogenesis remains uncertain, precipitating factors include localized trauma, chronic irritation, seborrhea, and androgen excess. The treatment of acne keloidalis nuchae is challenging and depends on the clinical stage of the disease; however, a multifaceted approach …

Type III hyperlipoproteinemia (type III HLP) rarely manifests in childhood. Long-term follow-up (37 years) of the first patient revealed hyp … ecurrent pancreatitis. Early presentation of disease in our patients was associated with additional precipitating factors. Drug treatment of paediatric type III HLP is indicated if dietary modifications alone are insufficient in managing the dyslipidaemia.

We describe a 4-year-old boy with posterior reversible leukoencephalopathy syndrome associated with hemolytic-uremic syndrome. He exhibited … c edema, this case rarely resulted in irreversible changes with cystic formation. We concluded that precipitating factors, i.e., clotting abnormalities, Shiga toxin, vasospasms and endothelial dysfunction might have synergistically induced irreversible brain infarcts, and caused unusual cavitations.

The aim of this study is to examine the mental health problems of older adults living in a residential home in a Greek rural area. A sample of 40 residents was compared with 40 matched controls attending a community open care centre for the elderly (OCCE). The following measures were used: Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), Geriatric Depression Screening Scale (GDSS), and the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE). The group of the residents had a lower educational level and presented with a higher prevalence of depression and suicidality. Suicidal ideation was not significant

The present study examines the effect of loss on treatment outcome in 92 persistently somatizing patients treated in an inpatient program. P … llowing treatment. The results support the concept that persistent somatization may arise from many precipitating factors. Assessing loss experiences in the patient may be an important factor in developing appropriate treatment strategies.

Risk for renal insufficiency (RI) resulting from nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) exists in cirrhosis with ascites, nephrotic syndrome, decompensated congestive heart failure, and chronic renal disease. We saw seven cases of NSAID RI that demonstrate important additional clinical risk factors. These include advanced age (mean, 76 years), use of diuretic drugs (6/7 patients), and evidence of renal vascular disease as suggested by long-standing hypertension, diabetes, or atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (7/7 patients). Analysis of past case reports of NSAID RI also showed these

Hypochondriasis in the elderly is often a preventable or reversible syndrome. It can become chronic if the patient finds no relief from soci … s a major source of the problem and to develop a realistic method of coping with it. Apparently the precipitating factors are often in the socioeconomic sphere; hence, social planners should be aware of this fact if the demands on the health care system are to be reduced.

This review focuses on suicide in patients with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) as well as risk factors and comorbidities of persons with ASD who have attempted suicide. Research was conducted by searching PubMed and Psychinfo for articles. Suicide in ASD is largely understudied. Although suicide is common in clinical samples, we have little knowledge of suicide in persons with ASD in the general population. Comorbidity, particularly with depression and other affective disorders or schizoid disorders and psychotic symptoms, is often reported, so it is difficult to determine if suicidality is a

BACKGROUND: This qualitative case study explores the potential for operationalizing the social science framework of structural vulnerability through integrating it into the classic 4P model of biopsychosocial case formulation.
METHODS: Through phenomenological analysis of data from a series of longitudinal in-depth interviews with the case study participant, a middle-aged Native American man recently initiated on buprenorphine-naloxone for opioid use disorder after undergoing below-the-knee leg amputation, the study developed a biopsychosocial-structural case formulation identifying predispos

Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) is a rare disease caused by uncontrolled complement activation due to complement dysregulation. It is often triggered by precipitating events such as infections, inflammation, pregnancy, or medications. Dengue, an endemic viral infection in Southeast Asia, can activate the complement pathway, thereby triggering aHUS in genetically susceptible individuals. Here, we present the case of a 33-year-old male who presented with Dengue fever and subsequently developed aHUS. Plasma exchange (PLEX) successfully normalized his neurological status and hematologica

BACKGROUND: Hypokalemic periodic paralysis (HPP) is a rare channelopathy characterized by episodic attacks of acute muscle weakness concomitant with hypokalemia. The etiology of hypokalemia is the shift of potassium into the cells, and the clinical symptoms resolve when potassium starts to leak back to the serum. Most of the time, the underlying ion channel defects are well compensated, and an additional trigger is often required to initiate an attack. Well-known trigger factors include carbohydrate-rich meals, exercise followed by rest, stress, cold weather, and alcohol consumption.

Cardiac apoptosis has been identified as one of the main precipitating factors of heart failure (HF) throughout the whole course of progressive disease. Limited to the lack of diagnostic markers and effective drug targets, cardiac apoptosis is still a major clinical challenge. Here, we reveal a potential novel therapeutic target for cardiac apoptosis. In the cause of the study, we found that KLHL38 was highly expressed in cardiac tissue of HF patients via GEO data-mining, which was further verified in the heart tissue of transverse aortic constriction mice. Meanwhile, the expression of KLHL38 …

Spontaneous pneumomediastinum (SPM) is an uncommon and usually benign self-limiting clinical disorder found in young people, often without apparent precipitating factors or diseases. A pressure gradient exists between the peripheral pulmonary alveoli and the hilum, and increased intra-alveolar pressure causes rupture of the terminal alveoli. We present the case of a 15-year-old male soccer player who presented with a complaint of anterior chest pain and dysphagia after stopping the strong ball with his chest. His symptom gradually progressed over hours. We can make the diagnosis of SPM using b…

Lichen planus has been associated with several precipitating factors, such as drugs, immunizations, and viral infections, including hepatitis C virus (HCV). Eruptive or disseminated lichen planus is a rare variation that most often presents as an acute, widespread exanthem that progresses rapidly and usually lasts for a shorter duration. This variation has not been well studied, and little is known about the etiologies and treatments of this rare form. Thus far, only a few cases of eruptive lichen planus have been reported to be associated with HCV infection. We report a case a 62-year-old wom…

Patients presenting with acute heart failure (AHF) represent a heterogeneous population with respect to demographics, clinical profiles, and precipitating factors. Despite this, most clinical trials have treated the study population as a homogeneous group in an attempt to achieve adequate statistical power for endpoint analysis. This approach has proven to be of little value in the development of new agents for treatment of AHF. By contrast, the phase III clinical trial of relaxin focused on a subset of AHF patients who were normotensive or hypertensive and who had moderate renal impairment. T…
