Based on Helmholtz Theory for accommodation the increasing sclerosis of lens nucleus and cortex is the main cause for the developments of presbyopia. Existing therapies, however, do not reverse the stiffness of the crystalline lens and thus do not regain real accommodation ability. A new approach to restore the flexibility of the lens could be realized by photodisruption using ultrafast laser pulses. This process, known as fs-lentotomy, was used to create micro-incisions which act as gliding planes inside the crystalline lens without opening the eye globe.

The authors examined 615 patients with chronic alcoholism. The study demonstrated an increased number of individuals with myopia, presbyopia, amblyopia, angiomas and angiosclerosis among them as compared to that of the general population. A lens system to correct for both refractive error and perimeter test distance is frequently needed for accurate perimetry. Patients often lack appropriate near vision corrections and full aperture trial case lenses, when they are available, barely cover the central 30 degrees and hence frequently produce lens rim artefacts. A special system of correction lenses has been developed for perimetry which overcomes these problems. This system is head mounted, being based upon the Essilor presbyopia demonstration set, and is suitable for use with most perimeters.

Presbyopia is inability of the eye to accommodate and provide clear images of near objects. It affects all dentists in middle age, when "near point," the nearest point at which the eye can focus accurately, exceeds ideal working distance. Dentistry has unique visual demands and many older dentists have been shown to be working with less-than-optimal visual efficiency and comfort. This paper discusses methods for improving vision in the dental operatory and details a new design for eyeglasses suitable for the presbyopic dentist.
