Quantitative mechanics of 3D printed nanopillars interacting with bacterial cells.

One of the methods to create sub-10 nm resolution metal-composed 3D nanopillars is electron beam-induced deposition (EBID). Surface nanotopographies (e.g., nanopillars) could play an important role in the design and fabrication of implantable medical devices by preventing the infections that are caused by the bacterial colonization of the implant surface. The mechanical properties of such nanoscale structures can influence their bactericidal efficiency. In addition, these properties are key factors in determining the fate of stem cells. In this study, we quantified the relevant mechanical prop

Roll-to-roll solvent annealing of printed P3HT : ICXA devices.

Currently, large-scale roll-to-roll production of printed organic photovoltaics (OPVs) involves high temperature annealing steps that are not compatible with thermally sensitive substrates, such as coated fabrics. In particular, the processing temperatures needed to produce the required crystalline ordering in the printed films are typically above the deformation and melting-points of these substrates. In this paper we investigate the use of local solvent recrystallisation (solvent annealing) on the roll-to-roll scale as a method for avoiding high-temperature thermal annealing. Solvent anneali

Biomechanical Evaluation and Strength Test of 3D-Printed Foot Orthoses.

Foot orthoses (FOs) are commonly used as interventions for individuals with flatfoot. Advances in technologies such as three-dimensional (3D) scanning and 3D printing have facilitated the fabrication of custom FOs. However, few studies have been conducted on the mechanical properties and biomechanical effects of 3D-printed FOs. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the mechanical properties of 3D-printed FOs and determine their biomechanical effects in individuals with flexible flatfoot. During mechanical testing, a total of 18 FO samples with three orientations (0°, 45°, and 90°) were f…

Assessing the Print Communication and Technology Attributes of an Academic Medical Center.

BACKGROUND: Historically, health literacy has been viewed as the patient's problem; however, it is now accepted that the responsibility for improving health literacy lies with the health care professionals and systems. An Institute of Medicine report outlines the health literacy attributes, such as printed patient education and technology, which both play a role in patient decision-making and engaging them in their health care. Research suggests that patients who are engaged in their health care have improved health outcomes. For health care organizations to accommodate the needs of all patien

Chemically Treated 3D Printed Polymer Scaffolds for Biomineral Formation.

We present the synthesis of nylon-12 scaffolds by 3D printing and demonstrate their versatility as matrices for cell growth, differentiation, and biomineral formation. We demonstrate that the porous nature of the printed parts makes them ideal for the direct incorporation of preformed nanomaterials or material precursors, leading to nanocomposites with very different properties and environments for cell growth. Additives such as those derived from sources such as tetraethyl orthosilicate applied at a low temperature promote successful cell growth, due partly to the high surface area of the por…

3D-printed model improves clinical assessment of surgeons on anatomy.

Performing surgical procedures often requires a surgeon to develop a skill to create 3-dimensional (3D) mental model on patient's anatomy. Question remains whether the touching on the 3D printed model can facilitate learning of patient anatomy than viewing the rendered virtual on-screen model. The printed and the virtual 3D model were developed from CT films taken from a 4-year-old girl, who had dysplasia of the hip in the left hip. Eleven subjects were called to report measures on six key anatomical features on the hips. The reporting time and the accuracy were compared between the two models

Introducing 3D Printed Models as Demonstrative Evidence at Criminal Trials.

This case report presents one of the first reported uses of a 3D printed exhibit in an English homicide trial, in which two defendants were accused of beating their victim to death. The investigation of this crime included a micro-CT scan of the victim's skull, which assisted the pathologist to determine the circumstances of the assault, in particular regarding the number of assault weapons and perpetrators. The scan showed two distinct injury shapes, suggesting the use of either two weapons or a single weapon with geometrically distinct surfaces. It subsequently served as the basis for a 3D p

3D-printed vascular networks direct therapeutic angiogenesis in ischaemia.

Arterial bypass grafts remain the gold standard for the treatment of end-stage ischaemic disease. Yet patients unable to tolerate the cardiovascular stress of arterial surgery or those with unreconstructable disease would benefit from grafts that are able to induce therapeutic angiogenesis. Here, we introduce an approach whereby implantation of 3D-printed grafts containing endothelial-cell-lined lumens induces spontaneous, geometrically guided generation of collateral circulation in ischaemic settings. In rodent models of hind-limb ischaemia and myocardial infarction, we demonstrate that the v

PRINT: A Protein Bioconjugation Method with Exquisite N-terminal Specificity.

Chemical conjugation is commonly used to enhance the pharmacokinetics, biodistribution, and potency of protein therapeutics, but often leads to non-specific modification or loss of bioactivity. Here, we present a simple, versatile and widely applicable method that allows exquisite N-terminal specific modification of proteins. Combining reversible side-chain blocking and protease mediated cleavage of a commonly used HIS tag appended to a protein, we generate with high yield and purity exquisitely site specific and selective bio-conjugates of TNF-α by using amine reactive NHS ester chemistry. We

Versatile 3D-printed headstage implant for group housing of rodents.

BACKGROUND: An unfavourable yet necessary side-effect of stereotaxic surgery involves the social isolation of post-surgery rats, in order to protect their wound site or skull-mounted implant from damage. Social isolation can cause a myriad of behavioural and physiological changes that are detrimental to the well-being of rats, with potential negative implications for a range of experimental paradigms. New method. Female Sprague Dawley rats (n=40) were implanted onto the skull with a novel 3D-printed headstage socket that surrounded an electrode connector. The socket accommodated a removable st

Application of 3D printed customized external fixator in fracture reduction.

INTRODUCTION: Long bone fracture is common in traumatic osteopathic patients. Good reduction is beneficial for bone healing, preventing the complications such as delayed union, nonunion, malunion, but is hard to achieve. Repeated attempts during the surgery would increase the operation time, cause new damage to the fracture site and excessive exposure to radiation. Robotic and navigation techniques can help improve the reduction accuracy, however, the high cost and complexity of operation have limited their clinical application. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We combined 3D printing with computer-ass…
