Aesthetic Outcome of Implants in the Anterior Zone after Socket Preservation and Conventional Implant Placement: A Retrospective Study.

Alveolar ridge resorption occurs after tooth extraction and has the potential to either complicate implant placement or impair the final aesthetic result. Techniques to preserve natural bone and soft-tissue contours are beneficial to clinicians and patients because postextraction buccal plate resorption may have significant clinical effects, especially in the aesthetic zone. This study aims to evaluate the aesthetic outcome of implants in the anterior zone after socket preservation and conventional placement. Data were collected from a total of 86,000 patients who visited Saveetha Dental Colle

Metal ions as inflammatory initiators of osteolysis.

Osteolysis and aseptic loosening currently contribute 75 % of implant failures. Furthermore, with over four million joint replacements projected to be performed in the United States annually, osteolysis and aseptic loosening may continue to pose a significant morbidity. This paper reviews the osteolysis cascade leading to osteoclast activation and bone resorption at the biochemical level. Additionally, the metal ion release mechanism from metallic implants is elucidated. Even though metal ions are not the predominating initiator of osteolysis, they do increase the concentration of key inflamma

[The modified lip-tooth-ridge classification: a guide for edentulous maxillary arches].

According to the width and height of the maxillary alveolar ridge, the maxillary edentulous jaws can be divided into three categories by using modified lip-tooth-ridge (MLTR) classification. Class Ⅰ is characterized by sufficient bone available for implants in the vertical and horizontal aspects and is suitable for fixed implant-supported prostheses. Class Ⅱ is characterized by sufficient bone amount available for implants in a horizontal aspect but insufficient for lip support and is suitable for a fixed detachable implant-supported prosthesis. Class Ⅲ is characterized by inadequate amount of

Molar socket shield technique with immediate implant placement maintains stable tissue architecture at 5- to 7-year follow-up: A clinical series.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Immediate implant placement in fractured molar sites presents surgical challenges because of the complex root anatomy and the risk of buccal plate resorption. The molar socket shield technique with atraumatic tissue handling may help preserve the alveolar architecture and enhance peri-implant outcomes. However, the long-term success of this technique has not been well reported. PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical series was to evaluate long-term success in terms of peri-implant tissue health after the molar socket shield technique and immediate implant placement. MATE

Glenosphere disengagement: a potentially serious default in reverse shoulder surgery.

UNLABELLED: Implant failure is a serious complication in reverse shoulder arthroplasty. We determined the incidence of glenosphere disengagement in a cohort of 479 reverse shoulder prostheses (468 Delta III [DePuy International Ltd, Leeds, UK], 11 Aequalis [Tornier, Grenoble, France]). We also determined whether disengagement adversely affected clinical outcomes. The minimum followup was 12 months (mean, 28.6 months; range, 12-72 months). Disengagement of the glenosphere occurred in 16 of 479 shoulders (3.2%). In 13 patients, the disengagement was partial (clear step-off between the baseplate

Treatment Outcome of the Transfacial Titanium Epiplating System for Total Nasal Defects.

BACKGROUND: Malignant tumors are the most frequent reason for acquired defects of the nose. Bone-anchored craniofacial prostheses represent a secure, uncomplicated, and cosmetically acceptable rehabilitative alternative to surgical reconstruction. The aim of this study was to determine a potential benefit of the Titanium Epiplating System (Fa. Medicon, Tuttlingen, Germany) as a grouped implant system in the anatomically difficult nasal region with limited bone supply. METHODS: Patients with complete nasal defects who received a transfacial Titanium Epiplating System between January of 2009 an

Stiffness optimization and reliable design of a hip implant by using the potential of additive manufacturing processes.

BACKGROUND: Due to the steadily increasing life expectancy of the population, the need for medical aids to maintain the previous quality of life is growing. The basis for independent mobility is a functional locomotor system. The hip joint can be so badly damaged by everyday wear or accelerated by illness that reconstruction by means of endoprostheses is necessary. RESULTS: In order to ensure a high quality of life for the patient after this procedure as well as a long service life of the prosthesis, a high-quality design is required, so that many different aspects have to be taken into accou

Metal allergy and second-generation metal-on-metal arthroplasties.

There are concerns about the induction of metal allergy with second-generation metal-on-metal prostheses, and the role that this may play in the development of complications such as 'pseudotumours' or failure of the implant. In this review, we attempt to set out the current knowledge on this subject. From a review of the literature, it is apparent that the first-generation metal-on-metal replacement hips did cause metal sensitization, and that joint failure was associated with this, although it is still not clear which one led to the other. Highly engineered second-generation metal-on-metal ar

[Arthroplasty at the proximal interphalengeal joint].

BACKGROUND: For the treatment of deformed finger middle joints that occur as a result of osteoarthritis or inflammatory and post-traumatic destruction, artificial joint replacement is an option to arthrodesis. Hereby mobility can be obtained, which is why this method generally has a higher acceptance. DISCUSSION: What clinical and subjective results can be expected after artificial finger middle joint replacement and what is the expected complication rate for the different types of joints? MATERIAL AND METHODS: We present our experiences with artificial joint replacement with various implant

Genetic variants in the development of autoimmune complaints and capsular contracture in women with breast implants: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Breast implants were introduced in 1963 by Cronin and Gerow and are widely used for reconstructive and aesthetic purposes. However, their use has been controversial due to the potential risk of developing autoimmune diseases and surgical complications such as capsular contracture. Currently, no genetic markers have been identified that are definitively associated with these complications. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review to check for the presence of genetic variants that are related to complications such as capsular contracture and autoimmune diseases in women with bre

Prosthetic valves or tissue valves--a vote for mechanical prostheses.

Thirty years of effort to obtain better substitutes for destroyed human heart valves brought continuous improvement of the various designs and materials used for the prostheses. However, none of the mechanical or tissue valves currently available meet all the requirements of an ideal artificial heart valve. Accurate comparison of results after implantation of mechanical and tissue valves is difficult because there are no randomized studies and most of the published results are gathered from patient groups operated on in different centers and over different time frames. Reliable comparison ther
