The psychophysical Sniffin' Sticks test, which includes an odor identification test, is the gold standard for assessing the sense of smell in clinical and scientific practice. A necessary requirement for the odor identification test is a close familiarity with the odors used by the inhabitants of the region in which it is used. We studied 77 healthy volunteers and 51 patients with olfactory dysfunction and we found that Russians are not familiar with the three smells from the test (licorice, turpentine and anise) and are completely unfamiliar with the one proposed alternative answer (chives).

Venous leg ulcers and chronic oedema including lymphoedema are lifelong conditions that cause great distress to sufferers due to psychophysical symptoms. Time and resources spent on managing chronic wounds place an economic burden on healthcare providers, particularly with an anticipated increase in an ageing population and diminishing numbers of those providing long-term care. Resources are further challenged if wounds remain unhealed. The human costs are even greater, with patients often facing a lifetime of discomfort due to low awareness of venous disease, despite epidemiological studies.

Neurophysiological research has shown increased spontaneous firing rates and synchronization along the auditory pathway correlate strongly with behavioral measures of tinnitus. Humans use emotions to decipher complex cascades of internal events. However, which mechanisms link descriptions of affective states to brain activity is unclear, with evidence supporting either local or distributed processing. A biologically favorable alternative is provided by the notion of gradient, which postulates the isomorphism between functional representations of stimulus features and cortical distance. Here, we use fMRI activity evoked by an emotionally charged movie and continuous ratings of the perceived emotion intensity to reveal the topographic organization of affective states.

Dark-adapted thresholds of albino and pigmented rats were estimated using behavioral methods. Albino and pigmented rats who had been water deprived learned to bar press for water reinforcement when a light stimulus was presented.
