In a longitudinal study, the prevalence of post partum depression was investigated in 293 women. They were assessed during gestation at 32 weeks, and consecutively after parturition with an interval of six weeks from four weeks until 34 weeks' post partum. The prevalence of post partum depression (RDC) varied between seven and 14%, with a peak at ten weeks' post partum. The efficacies of two methods of extracorporeal detoxication, hemodialysis and hemosorption, was assessed on the basis of the results of spectrophotometric, peptide, and biologic studies in 54 women with acute renal failure in the postpartum period caused by massive blood loss at childbirth. Both the methods were found to eliminate various toxic products from the blood serum, this justifying their application.

Postpartum thrombosis of varicose veins of the round ligament may present in a clinical picture similar to an irreducible inguinal hernia. Two such unusual cases are reported. One patient underwent surgery while the other, with a presumptive diagnosis of the same condition, was observed, with no complications occurring in both patients. This condition has not to my knowledge been previously reported. The increased incidence of both varicose veins and thrombosis in the postpartum period should alert the physician to the diagnosis of such conditions.

To determine the prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in Thai postpartum women, we evaluated thyroid function and thyroid autoantibodies in 812 consecutive unselected women at 1.5 months post partum. A 26 year old patient is urgently submitted to cesarean section for acute fetal pain. After 23 days, hysterectomy has been performed because of haemorrhagic shock. The pathology revealed a placenta increta. The lack of risk factors and the long, asymptomatic period between delivery and haemorrhage make this case noteworthy.

To investigate the long-term outcome of postpartum thyroiditis (PPT), 43 patients with PPT and 171 control women were evaluated 3.5 (range 2-4) years postpartum. Ten (23%) PPT patients were hypothyroid compared to none of the controls (P less than 0.001). Over a 17-year period, 15 patients with acute puerperal inversion of the uterus were managed at the University Hospital, Kuala Lumpur, an incidence of 1 in 4,836 deliveries. Injudicious traction on the umbilical cord before the uterus was well contracted, was probably the most important causative factor. Haemorrhage was more severe when removal of the placenta was done prior to correction of the inversion. Peripartal serum alkaline phosphatase activity and lactate dehydrogenase activity were measured in 30 dairy cows in order to examine the association between retained fetal membranes and enzyme activity. The frequency of muscle pain was studied in two groups of patients. One group consisted of 106 women undergoing Caesarean section; the other comprised 20 pre-menopausal women undergoing hysterectomy. Both groups received a single bolus injection of suxamethonium 100 mg to facilitate tracheal intubation. There was a statistically significant decrease in the frequency of muscle pain in the pregnant group (7.5%) compared with the non-pregnant group (30%).
