Pulse oximetry has been proposed as an aid to monitoring raised intracompartmental pressures (ICPs). ICP and percentage haemoglobin oxygen saturation in the affected limb were studied in 10 consecutive patients with raised ICP. Compartment pressures ranged from 28 to 64 mmHg (mean 40.9 mmHg). In two patients with absent pulses, pulse oximetry failed to detect pulsatile flow and recorded 0 per cent saturation. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To determine whether lumbar epidural anesthesia affects pulse oximeter signals in the upper or lower extremity, 13 ASA I patients were studied.
METHODS: Temperature and pulse oximeter probes were placed on the finger and the toe.
RESULTS: After epidural injection, the amplitude of the pulse oximeter waveform on the toe increased eight-fold but declined by 50% in the finger. The increase in amplitude of the pulse oximeter waveform in the foot preceded the temperature rise.

A case of stridor is described which was due to the presence of a foreign body in the larynx of an infant. Following partial removal, compression of the right main bronchus was detected because of continuing low arterial oxygen saturation. The use of pulse oximetry allowed this complication to be identified, and the advantages of this method of monitoring are discussed.

A 13-year-old child is described who presented with generalized pemphigus vulgaris associated with extraordinarily high titers of circulating autoantibodies against the pemphigus antigen. A differential pulse polarographic method is described for the determination of the antibiotic tetracycline HCl in the presence of its degradation product anhydrotetracycline. The method utilizes the large difference in their differential pulse polarograms at a peak potential of -1.39 V in 0.1 M phosphate buffer as the base electrolyte (pH 6.8). The assay was evaluated using synthetic mixtures and applied to the analysis of commercial tetracycline HCl samples. The results obtained with this method are in close agreement with those from the spectrophotometric absorbance ratio method.

Vestibular stimulation is able to produce neurovegetative effects, which are disagreable and annoying. By an overflow of the vestibular stimulus to the neurovegetative centres changes in blood pressure and pulse rate are more frequently induced than are subjective neurovegetative symptoms as nausea, pallor etc. There is some correlation between both manifestations, but also some independency in occurrence.

The use of pulse oximetry as a noninvasive method to assess intravascular volume status is described. Pulse Wave Velocity (P.W.V.) is recorded pneumatically in 27 members of a large family with ecchymotic Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and compared to registrations in 216 normal subjects. Five relatives, ranging from 3 to 50 years of age, are found to have lowered P.W.V., indicating an increased distensibility of the arterial wall. This might be due to a collagen type III deficiency.

A variable frequency-burst type, electromagnetic pulse generator has been developed to optimize the effect of electrical stimulation on bone growth. Using a pair of coils, with 100 turns and 18-gauge wire, the instrument can generate a maximum magnetic field of 300 Gauss. Its pulse repetition frequency can be varied from 10 Hz to 2 KHz and the duty cycle, consisting of several short carrier frequency pulses, can be varied up to 95%. This design also permits the period of the carrier pulse to be changed.

A 38-year-old man was hospitalized with severe neck pain. Aortic arch angiography failed to reveal an abnormality. Doppler flow study showed a prolonged systolic flow phase with a double peak in the left common carotid. In a study undertaken to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of two behavioral treatments for essential hypertension (biofeedback on arterial pulse-wave velocity and progressive relaxation) 24 hypertensive subjects were randomly assigned to either a relaxation or biofeedback treatment group for 5 weekly sessions.
